The UK and US welcomed yesterday's announcement by chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed of Jatiya Sangsad elections on Dec 18.

The UK, in a statement issued by its embassy, said it welcomed the announcement and "the reassurance it would provide to the Bangladeshi people."

The US embassy, slightly more cautious in its reaction, said:

"We are still analysing the chief advsier's remarks."

"But we are pleased to see that elections will be held before the end of the year according to the roadmap," an embassy spokesperson told bdnews24.com.

"We look forward to free, fair and credible elections this year."
