Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed yesterday informed the nation of the Election Commission's decision to hold the much awaited general elections on December 18 this year.
Addressing the nation over Radio and Television last evening, he also said the Election Commission (EC) has decided to hold upazila polls in two phases on December 24 and 28.
Explaining the preparatory work done by the Caretaker Government during the last 20 months to hold a free, fair and credible election, he sought the cooperation of all to make the elections a success.

Eid shopping picking up in port city

Though the Eid shopping was dull in this port city during first two weeks of holy Ramadan it is now gaining momentum much to the relief of the businessmen trading in sarees, shoes, punjabis, shirts, cosmetics and various other articles.
The Durga Puja of the Hindu community in the same week of Eid-ul-Fitr has breathed in added vibrancy to shopping spree.
The fashinable shopping malls such as Sanmar Ocean City, Ameen Centre, Central Plaza, New Market, Mimi Super Market and Chittagong Shopping Complex and many other big and small shops in the port city are abuzz with customers of high income groups.

Dozens killed in Pak hotel blast

A bomb attack has hit the Marriott Hotel in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, killing at least 40 people.
The BBC's Barbara Plett who is at the scene says the blast created a 20ft (6m) deep crater, and destroyed the entire front section of the hotel.
She says the building is engulfed in flames, and rescue workers are carrying out bloodied victims and bodies.
Police say the blast occurred as a lorry approached the hotel and they suspect it was a suicide attack.
Police estimate that the blast was caused by more than a tonne of explosives.

The law enforcing agencies are reassessing the security situation after an Islamist group threatened violence across the country, if their detained members were not released by Sunday.
Police detained 11 members of the Hizbut Tahrir from Rajshahi on Thursday on suspicion of plotting subversive acts in the country.
Another ultimatum faxed to the New Nation offices yesterday in the name of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh and signed by its so called military chief Mahmmad Obaidur Rahman Gayasi warned the law enforcers and the Government advisers that the city streets would be drenched with blood and no one will be able to live in peace in the country if their compatriots were not released in 48 hours.

Mild tremors jolt capital

A series of mild tremors jolted the capital Dhaka and its adjoining areas just before the Iftar yesterday evening, forcing hundreds of people running out of their houses in panic.
However, there were no immediate reports of significant damage, death or casualty in any parts of the country, officials said.
The epicenter of the quakes was 76.1 kilometer of the east of Brahmanbaria district.
The tremors caused panic and fear among the people when some of the structures cracked and swayed. At that time, people were taking preparations to break their fasting.

BNP, Jamaat tell EC at dialogue: Hold stalled JS polls following old laws

The leaders of three political parties of the four-party alliance held dialogue with the Election Commission (EC) separately at the EC secretariat at Sher-e- Bangla Nagar in the city yesterday.
During the meeting, they demanded holding of the parliamentary elections before the local government polls, withdrawal of the state of emergency and amendments to Representation of the People's Order (RPO) 2008 and regulations relating to political parties registration.
The EC held dialogue with Jammat-e- Islami Bangladesh at 10:30 am, BNP at 11:50 and with the Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) at 2:00 pm.

Joint art exhibition at Drik Gallery

To mark the 36th anniversary of Bangladesh-Thailand diplomatic relations, the Embassy of Thailand in Dhaka organised a twelve-day exhibition on the works of 27 artists, one of them from Thailand, at the Drik Gallery in the city.
The exhibition was inaugurated on September 16. The Thai Ambassador Chalermpol Thanchitt inaugurated the show featuring watercolour paintings by Bangladeshi fine art students and the renowned Thai artist.
Earlier the Thai Embassy organised an art workshop, painting competition on 'Colours of Thailand' for Bangladeshi students and a seminar, titled 'Bangladesh - Thailand: potentials from partnership.
