CAARP help restore pisciculture activities in SIDR-Hit region of Barisal

'Cyclone Affected Aquaculture Rehabilitation Project (CAARP)' of World Fish Center-Bangladesh ( WFC-BD) with financial assistances from USAID helping restoring and developing pisciculture and fishery activities in five districts of Sidr affected southern region.
Around 37,500 small and marginal pisciculture and fish cultivators would be benefited by this project under implementation in 5 Sidr affected districts including Barisal and Patuakhali. The project assistances included distribution of required number of fish, fish-fries of different varieties and prawn according to the needs and sizes of ponds, tanks, water resource.
Under CAARP project besides supplying fish-fries, different types of fish-feed, limestone, TSP, urea fertilizers, oil-cake, fish and pond management training and equipment, medicine, cloths, dyke repairing and construction surrounds fish cultivation spots.
Financial assistances also provided for the people engaging in pisciculture and fish cultivation. This project is implemented with the assistances of 11 local NGOs including Association of Voluntary Assistance for Society(AVAS), Chardradwip Development Society (CDS), of Barisal, Community Development and Health Care Center (CDHC) of Galachipa under Patuakhali and Nazrul Smriti Sangho of Amtoli (NSS) under Barguna districts.
Catastrophic sidr ravaged the wealth and properties of south-western coastal people of Bangladesh and collapsed interactive relationship of livelihood, financial capabilities and means of productive capacity.
Taslima, Fazar Ali, Hannan, Kamal Howladar of Uzirpur upazila under Barisal, Rahima Bibi, a small pond owner of Paschim Laxmipur village of Dashmina upazilla under Patuakhali said that they benefited to get rehabilitation aquaculture package of World Fish center-Bangladesh and practiced pond aquaculture with dyke cropping.
Naseem Ahmed Aleem, principal coordinator, Zakir Hoassain, aquaculture experts of WFC-BD, Dr. Manjurul Karim and Kurat-E-Kabir, project managers of CAARP and said that they would like to do some things regarding positive changes of coastal people's livelihoods.
They reciting about this project operation and smooth functioning further said that it was an unparallel and challenging project but had a great opportunity to recover livelihood condition by up-scaling from ransacked situation of the poor small pisciculture, fishery and fish farmers in the sidr-hit who were really affected by the devastating natural calamity.
Iftar, Doa mahfil held in Mymensingh

One killed, 10 hurt in Jessore road mishap

One person was killed on the spot and 10 others were injured in a road accident near Paulbari Square Sunday morning. The dead was identified as Nasiruddin (27), son of Mosrak Hossain of village Tujalpur under Satkhira sadar upazila in Satkhira district.
According to report, a Kushtia- bound passenger bus was coming from Satkhira in the morning. When the bus reached near power house of Paulbari Square on Jessore-Dhaka Highway the driver of the bus lost control over the steering and hit the road-side tree and turned turtle and fell in on the road- side ditch, as a result bus passenger Nasiruddin died on the spot and injuring ten others.
The injured persons were admitted into General Hospital Jessore.
Power, water crises make Barisal city life miserable

Erratic power supply and severe water crisis have made lives of about half million city dwellers miserable during Ramadan.
Barisal City Corporation and West Zone Power Distribution Company sources said the daily demand for water and power in the city, on an average, is one core gallons and 60 megawatt respectively.
But, at present, highest 45 gallons of water and 25 megawatt of electricity could be supplied to city dwellers, the sources said.
Barisal City Corporation daily supplies water two times through pipe lines and nine out of 28 water supply pumps of the BCC are out of order.
The condition of rest 19 is not also well and most of the time of the day the pumps could not be operated due to load shedding or low voltage of electricity, the BCC sources added.
Mehdi Hassan, Chief Executive Officer and Nurul Islam, Superintending Engineer of Barisal City Corporation, said authority is trying their best to improve the water supply situation in the city.
The water supplying tanker, collected for BCC at a cost of Tk 40 lakh to supply 5,000 gallons of water per trip in most crisis-prone areas, would be in service very soon, they added.
The BCC project of surface water treatment plant would be implemented for permanent solution of the water supply crisis, they informed.
Asim Kumar Ghosh, Deputy General Manager in the rank of superintending engineer of WZPDCO, said power supply to Barisal depends on the total generation and supply situation of the country.
"We are trying to take sincere attempts to improve the situation and ensure uninterrupted power supply at least at the time of Iftar and Sehri for the convenience of the observing fasting of holy Ramadan," he added.
Discussion meet on significance of Ramzan held in Gopalganj

A discussion meeting on significance and education of the holy Ramzan and Iftar party were held at Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited Gopalganj branch hallroom, organised by Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited Gopalganj branch on September 14 last.
The programme was presided over by Mohammad Zahangir Alam, Manager Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited Gopalganj branch and S.M. Ashfaque Hussain, Deputy Commissioner Gopalganj was also present as chief guest. AKM Harun-or-Rashid, Executive Vice-President and Zonal Chief Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited Barisal Zone, Mohammad Abdul Kuddus Amin, Superintendent of Police Gopalganj, Moniruzzaman ADC (General), Motiar Rahman ADC (Rev.) The discussion meeting was addressed, among others, by Moulana Abdul Hamid, Principal Gopalganj Alia Madrasha and Moulana Moinuddin, Principal Sourt Course Madrasha.

Naogaon DC holds opinion sharing meet with FFC

Newly appointed Deputy Commissioner of Naogaon, Ahsan Habib Talukder held an exchange of views, with the district upazilas Mukhti Joddha Commanders on September 3, at its conference room.
He uttered heroic praise-worthy in honour of the freedom fighters, during 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, and the country will never forget their heroic battles.
District mukhti joddha deputy commander S.M. Serajul Islam, Badalgachi upazila commander Dewan Abdur Rahim Bablu, Patnitola upazila commander Fazi Akhter Hossain Tara and others spoke on the occasion.
ADC (general) Sayeed Noor Alam, ADC (revenue) Shahjahan Ali, NDC Sayed Farooq Ahmed were present.

Mother, daughter killed in Pabna road mishap
UNB, Pabna
A woman and her daughter were killed as a truck rammed into their motorbike at Purat in Shanthia upazila today (Tuesday).
The deceased were identified as Joynab Khatun, 30, head clerk of Shanthia Women Degree College and her five years old daughter Madina.
Joynab's husband Hafez Minhaj,40, was injured critically in the accident.
Family sources said the accident occurred at 10am when a truck rammed into the motorbike of Mijhaj, leaving his wife Joynab and daughter Madina dead on the spot. Injured Minhaj was rushed to district general hospital. Minhaj along with his wife and daughter were going to his father-in-law's house by the motorbike.
Timber worth Tk 1.5 cr seized in Bandarban in a month

Forest Department officials, in various drives, seized 10,000 cubic feet illegal timber worth about Tk 1.5 crore here in a month.
They also seized six trucks and seven boats used for timber smuggling.
Forest Officer F M Munirul Islam said, acting on a secret information these timber were seized from Bolipara, Thanchi, Tankabati, Chimbuk, Waijunction, Sheronpara, Chauripara, Kamlong, Tarachhamukh, Goaliakhola, Langirchar, Bhorakhali, Boroitoli and Chitakhola area.

Two electrocuted
in Narsingdi
Narsingdi, Sept 16 : Two teenaged boys were electrocuted at Nagaria Kandi in the district town Monday night. The dead were identified as Sabuj, 17, son of Abu Siddiq, and Selim, 18, son of Tara Mia. They both were the class X students of UMC Jute Mill Adarsha School. Witnesses said a torn electric wire fell on the two friends at about 10pm when they were returning home from a local mosque after saying tarabi prayers, leaving them dead on the spot, reports UNB.
Man robbed of Tk 10 lakh in Sylhet
Sylhet, Sept 16 : Muggers robbed a man of Tk 10 lakh at Badikona under South Surma thana on Monday while returning with cash drawn out from a bank. The muggers intercepted Ripon, of Dashgram village in Biswanathpur upazila, near Pragati School at about 3pm when he alongwith a relative was going to home by a motorcycle after making the withdrawal from Chauhatta Branch of HSBC Bank. They took away the money and fled the scene in a CNG-run baby taxi and a motorcycle. A case was filed with the police, reports UNB.
Accident kills one
in Dinajpur
Dinajpur, Sept 16 :A middle aged man was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Goreahat in Kaharol uapzila on Thakurgaon-Dinajpur highway Monday. The dead was identified as Mansur Ali,45, of Gorpipura village. Witnesses said a Dinajpur bound minibus knocked Mansur Ali down and ran over him when he was crossing the road in the afternoon. Local people barricaded the road following the accident, disrupting traffic for about an hour. Later, police removed the barricade, reports UNB.
Rapist gets life term in Chuadanga
Chuadanga, Sept 16 : A court here Monday convicted a man and awarded him life term imprisonment in case of women repression. The convict, Abul Hamid, of Thakurpukur village of Damurhuda upazila, was also fined Tk 10,000, in default he will have to suffer six months more RI. According to prosecution, Abul had affair with Parvin of the same village but when Parvin became pregnant following the relationship Abul denied to marry her. Victim's father filed a case on February 20,2004, reports UNB.
