Forest Dept takes initiative to popularise Agar plantation

The Department of Forest has taken an initiative to expand and popularise Agar plantation in the country considering the economic value of such a unique forest resource, particularly for its demand in the international market.

Agar or Eagle Wood in English and scientifically known as "Aquilaria Agalocha Roxb" is a medium-sized evergreen plant mainly available in East Himalayan lands, Bhutan, Assam, greater Sylhet, Chittagong and CHT districts.

Agar tree is eco-friendly which has enormous economic importance as it is used in making costly and splendid perfume and medicine. There was huge demand of Agar in international perfume markets, particularly in the Middle Eastern countries, where people are in a habit of using perfume regularly.

According to a survey, about 5,000 metric tons of Agar wood were traded by 20 countries in global markets during the period of 1995 to 2001. Forest Department sources said there are 121 Agar processing factories in the country with oil producing capacity of 1,200 kilogram annually. But the country was now producing about 800 kilogram Agar oil per year as it has not been able to get maximum production from the factories due to shortage of Agar wood. Experts said about 25 gram or two tolas of oil can be harvested from a 13-year-old Agar tree and in the local market per tola Agar oil is being sold at a price ranging between Taka 5,000 and 7,000. One can earn Taka one crore from Agar output over one hectare of land. Currently the country earns Taka 30 to 35 crore in foreign exchange annually by exporting Agar wood by private sectors.

Forest officials said they have been going with "participatory or social afforestation concept" to popularise and encourage poor-segment of the population to plant Agar wood which ultimately would help them to improve their economic condition. As per the concept, a portion of economic outcomes from the Agar garden will be given to the participants who would look after and help growing the garden.

The Forest Department has successfully implemented Taka 26.72 crore 1st phase of experimental Agar cultivation project with a 5-year term from 1998-1999 to 2004- 2005 in many potential places in Sylhet, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar and the districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts.

On the basis of success of the 1st phase, the department has taken up another Taka 15.14 crore project for a 5-year term titled "Agar Garden Plantation Project" (2nd phase)" which began in 2007.

Sources said the Agar plantation has been gaining popularity among the poor people at different parts of the district after successful implementation of the first phase of the project. Under the 2nd phase, the Forest Department is planning to expand Agar plantation by bringing 106 hectares of land during the current fiscal year by spending Taka 21.54 lakh.

Deputy Conservator of Forest (DCF) of Chittagong North Forest Division (CNFD), Mohammed Safiul Alam Chowdhury told BSS that they set a target to bring another 100 acres of land under Agar plantation in next fiscal and finally bring vast potential hilly areas of the district under new plantation after evaluating the progress of the on-going project.

Forest Department for the first time started Agar plantation in Korerhat area under Mirsharai upazila over 14.46 hectares of land during 1999-2000 fiscal.

Later, the CNFD has launched the programme in a bigger way and expanded the plantation in over 114 hectares of land at Narayanhat, Mandakini, Dhurang, Shobalchari in the district. A total of 192 inhabitants of the areas have been given responsibility to look after the garden under participatory afforestation programme.

Officials hoped that the participants will be benefited economically after collecting Agar oil from the garden after five years.

Officials informed that 1,600 Agar saplings are planted on each hectares of land and one member has been given responsibility to take care of the garden of a particular area. A good number of marginal poor and landless people of the hilly areas including a good number of females were involved in the programme. The members were asked to nurse and protect the fresh garden for their own benefit.

Forest officials said they have received encouraging response from the people to participatory afforestation programme of Agar plantation.

Coffee cultivation gaining popularity among farmers in CHT

Coffee cultivation has been gaining popularity among the farmers of the three hill districts under 'Mixed crop cultivation project'.

Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board started the nine-year project with a view to popularize some non-traditional value added crops like coffee, orange in Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts.

So far, coffee has been produced in 400 gardens in Ruma upazila of the district. Besides, it has been cultivated in Sajek and Borkol of the district and Ramgarh and Panchhari of Khagrachhari district.

Mac Foundation collected the coffee from the farmers and has started its processing and marketing. Abul Hossain, a coffee farmer of Ruma upazila said, highest 5 kg coffee beans could be produced from each tree and 500 grams coffee could be collected after processing 1 kg coffee beans.

Hill Tracts Development Board sources said coffee plants bear flowers in February-April and matured seeds are available in December-January.

Call to arrest price hike of essentials

A protest rally against adulteration of food, price hike of essentials was brought out by the Social Development, a non-government organisation and the Caritas at Bhulta, Rupganj, Narayanganj on the 6th September last. Later they organised a protesting meeting at the Bhulta Intersection near Dhaka-Sylhet highway chaired by Zohara Akter, Chairman of the Social Development non-government organisation. People from all walks of life attended the meeting and took part in the procession. Shahabuddin Secretary, Poet Naib Ali, Adus Salam, Rafiqul Islam, Mohammad Ali of the Social Development non-government organisation and Farid Ahmed, Jatindra Chandra Das, Azahar Uddin, Nurul Islam, Renuka Rani Sarker and Anna Palma of KARITASH activists addressed the meeting. They demanded to arrest the price hike of essentials and keep markets free from adulterated food.

Netrakona BNP reformist group avoiding party programmes

The scenario of Netrakona district BNP office has been changed after the release of Begum Khaleda Zia as the party office are being crowded everyday with the presence of a large number of party workers and leaders.

Sources close to the party said, a festiv mood has been generated among the local party workers and leaders following the release of BNP Chairperson Begum Zia. Meanwhile, Netrakona district BNP and it's front organisations including JCD organised a series of Milad Mahfils and offered special prayers during the last two days expressing gratitude to Allah as their chairperson released from jail.

The delighted party workers and leaders also expressed happiness distributing sweets among the local BNP leaders after the release of their party leader. But, number of influential local BNP leaders, who known as "reformists" were reportedly remained absence in all the functions held inside the party office since after the release of Begum Zia.

Some party leaders on condition of their anonymity claimed that number of front ranking party leaders of Netrakona BNP, who were with the reformists group, went into hiding or started avoiding the party programme to avert any untoward situation. However they declined to disclose their names.

5 held with phensidyl in Sirajganj

Sirajganj, Sept 12 : Police arrested five people alongwith 1,750 bottles of phensidyl syrup from Gol Chattar area under Jamuna Bridge (West) thana. Acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a Dhaka-bound private car from Rajshahi at about 8:30am. They searched the car and recovered 1,750 bottles of the cough syrup. The law enforcers also arrested five car passengers for possessing the contraband item, reports UNB.

Minor boy drowns in Sirajganj

Sirajganj, Sept 12 : A minor boy drowned in flood waters at Nabbila village in Shahjadpur upazila Friday. The dead was identified as Sagor, 6, son of Tayeb Ali. Family sources said Sagor slipped into flood water while playing in his house at about 11am, reports UNB.

Opiniuon sharing meet on CEPZ held

Comilla, Sept 12 : An opinion exchange meeting here Friday discussed various problems of Comilla Export Processing Zone (CEPZ), including the recent workers unrest. The meeting, held at Police Super's conference room, also emphasized the need to continue normal production at the EPZ by resolving workers unrest. A coordination committee has also been formed to look into the interest of the workers and entrepreneurs to avert any untoward situation in the EPZ, reports UNB.

11 suspected snatchers held in Ctg

Chittagong, Sept 12 : Eleven suspected muggers were arrested by Kotwali police during a daylong drive here Tuesday. Kotwali police said they conducted the drive from morning to 5pm and recovered two stolen CNG-run auto-rickshaws and 20 mobile phone sets from the gang.
