Flood situation improves in Rangpur, affected people return home

The overall flood situation marked further improvement due to reduced flow of waters from upstream and no rainfall in greater Rangpur and the adjoining northern districts on Tuesday last.
All the displaced people who took shelter in safer places, flood control embankments and high lands in the flood-hit areas of greater Rangpur, have already returned their respective homes, officials said.
Official sources said that improvement of the flood situation would continue in greater Rangpur and other northern districts on the Brahmaputra basin with no possibility of any further floods this season.
The major rivers marked further falls at the points in Kurigram, Rangpur Nilphamari, Gaibandha and Lalmonirhat and the situation continues improving in Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
There is no flood situation now in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts of greater Rangpur as the floodwaters receded fast, officials in the Water Development Board (WDR) told BSS.
The major rivers and their tributaries were flowing below their respective danger marks at al points in greater Rangpur and adjoining northern districts in the Brahmaputra basin this morning.
Floodwaters also receded from the very low-lying char areas in Chilmari, Rajibpur, Roumari, eastern parts of Illipur and Nageswari upazilas in Kurigram and Fulchhari upazila and its adjoining areas in Gaibandha, the sources said.
The government officials and local disaster management committee. NGOs and some voluntary organisations are working in the affected areas and distributing relief goods and providing assistance for the affected people, the sources said.
The District Administrations have allocated rice and money for the flood-hit areas and those are being distributed among the flood victims.
District relief and rehabilitation Officers of the affected districts told BSS that the administrations have put in their efforts in relief and rehabilitation activities in the flood-hit areas The WDR recorded 35 mm rainfalls at Dalia point in Nilphamari district on Tuesday and there were no rainfalls in other points of greater Rangpur during the period. The WDR sources said the Dharla marked a further fall by 24 cm on Tuesday and was flowing 44cm below the danger mark at Kurigram point yesterday morning.
The Teesta marked falls by 11 am at Kawnia, rose by 20cm at nalia points during the period where the river was flowing below the danger levels by 172cm and 65 respectively yesterday morning.
RU Chemistry dept to celebrate golden jubilee on Oct 25, 26

The Chemistry department of Rajshahi University (RU) will celebrate their golden jubilee amidst massive enthusiasm of the department on Oct. 25 and 26 at RU campus said on a press conference.
The department will take elaborate programme including rally, seminar, orientation with participation of present and former students and cultural programme.
For participating on the jubilee celebration registration fees have been fixed for present student, teachers and employees Tk 700, for former students 1200, every member of the family extra Tk 300 and for every child above 3 years Tk 300.

570 hectares of cropland damaged by floodwaters in Kishoreganj

Flash flood, caused by the incessant rains over the last week, and onrush of waters from across the border, submerged the vast areas in haor areas of the district leaving an unspecified number of people maroored by the deluge.
The flood affected are Karimganj, Katiadi, Nikli, Hossainpur, Kuliarchar, Bajitpur, Itna, Tarail, Austagram, Pukundi and port town Bhairab Bazar.
The Meghna river in Bhairab and Dhonu rivers, Ghorouthra river and old Brahmaputra rivers were flowing above the danger level. The flood waters has affected 400 villages in haor area and snapped the road communication with Kishoreganj headquarters. Education institutions were declared closed as those inundated by flood waters.
Paddy, jute and vegetables on 570 hectares of land have been damaged in the flood in seven upazilas of the district.
Different varieties of crops can survive six to seven days under water. But, this time these crops remained under water for 2 days in the flood-hit areas, Md Mohasin an official of the Agriculture Department told the New Nation.
DAE has prepared 100 hectares land of Aman seedbeds for distribution of seeds among the flood-hit farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture in support with Ministry of disaster Management will start agri-rehabilitation programme in severe flood-hit areas after recession of the flood water.
College girl commits suicide in Narail

A colle gegirl committed suicide after hearing the news of her failure in the HSC examination on Wednesday evening. Anika Zaman, 18, daughter of Asaduzzaman of Barasula area in Narail town, sat for the HSC examination this year.
On the day of the incident the result of examination was published. Hearing the news of her failure in the examination she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.
Freedom fighter dead

Elias Ali (68), a valiant freedom fighter of Khoishar village of Daudpur Union under Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj, died on 7th September 2008 due to old age complication. He was buried with state honour in presence of the Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Shazzad Hossain of Rupganj Upazila at his family graveyard.

3 clinic owners fined in Thakurgaon
Thakurgaon, Sept 10 : A mobile court conducted separate raids at three clinics in the town on Tuesday and realised Tk 70,000 in fine from its owners for various irregularities. The court led by magistrate Mujib-Ul-Ferdous raided the Eliza Clinic and Rodela Clinic in Hazipara area and Shusri Clinic in the bus terminal area and found irregularities, including inadequate number of physicians and nurses, unhygienic condition and admitting excessive patients. The court with the assistance of joint forces fined Eliza Clinic Tk 40,000, and Rodela Clinic and Shusri Clinic Tk 10,000 and Tk 20,000 respectively, reports UNB.
Robber killed in Natore
Natore, Sept 10 : An alleged robber was hacked to death by some assailants at Tarai village in Singra upazila on Tuesday midnight. The victim was identified as Lokman Hossain, 35, of the village. Local people said a gang of unknown assailants attacked and chopped Lokman indiscriminately leaving him dead on the spot. Police suspected that internal conflict among robbers might be the reason behind the killing. Police said Lokman was wanted in a number of robbery cases, reports UNB.
Heroin seized in
C'nawabganj
Chapainawabganj, Sept 10 : BDR jawans seized 4.3 kg heroin from Diar Manikchar frontier area in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night. Sources said a BDR patrol team chased a gang of smugglers when they entered into Bangladesh territory from India at about 9:30pm. At one stage the smugglers fled the scene abandoning the heroin. With this, the BDR personnel recovered a total of 9.8 kgs of contraband heroin from the district in last one week, reports UNB.
Mobile court realizes Tk 1.75 lakh in fine in Rajshahi
Rajshahi, Sept 10 : A mobile court in separate raids in the city realized Tk 1.75 lakh in fine on Monday from four restaurants, bakeries and sweetmeat shops for selling adulterated and stale food items. The mobile court, comprising the officials of Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the district administration, during their anti-adulteration drive found the bakeries and restaurants were preparing food items in most unhygienic environment. They realized Tk 50,000 each from Chilis Thai and Chinese Restaurant, Grand Banaful Sweet Factory and Rajshahi Mistibari factory and Tk 25,000 from Bishal Food and Industries, reports UNB.
Fake ACC Inspector held in B'baria
Brahmanbaria, Sept 10 : Police arrested a fake Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Inspector while cheating traders at Aruail Bazaar in Sarail upazila on Monday. The arrestee was identified as Mannan Miazi, 40, hailed from Habiganj district. Local people said, Mannan came to the bazaar and started checking trade licenses of the shop owners introducing him as ACC Inspector. The fraud fined few traders Tk 3,300 as they did not renew their licenses, reports UNB.
Thief electrocyed in Munshiganj
Munshiganj, Sept 10 : An unidentified thief was electrocuted while he was stealing live electric wire at Paikpara in Tongibari upazila Monday midnight. Abdur Rashid, general manager of district Palli Budyut Samity, said the thief aged about 28, died on the spot as electricity passed through his body while he was cutting the live wire. Police on information recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy Tuesday morning, reports UNB.
