Iftars….Gastronomical Delights of Ramadan

Every year Muslims across the country welcome the advent of Ramadan not only with religious fervour and devotion but also with gastronomical delights that are unique to this month alone. As the time for breaking the fast, commonly known as Iftar, approaches every street and corner of the city emerges with specialities catering to the taste buds of the devotees. Savoury mouth watering culinary items are put on display to attract the residents as they hurry homeward before the Azaan (the call for prayer) that ends the fast. Most iftar stalls and bazaars boast traditional items like sweet 'jilapi’, 'halim’, 'piaju’, 'beguni’, 'chola bhuna’, 'potato chops’, 'kebabs’ and various kinds of fritters; while others sell unconventional items like 'juices’, 'pizzas’, 'dahi baras’, 'dahi bundias’, 'faludas’, 'wanthons’, 'soups’ and other fusion culinary delights. However, the real treat for iftar is to be had in Old Dhaka’s Chawk Bazaar area where the preparation for the iftar bazaar starts from midday. Here one would find special items like 'shutli kebab’, 'jali kebeb’, 'mutton /beef curry’, 'parathas’, fresh cream desserts, 'lassi’, juices, crispy hot 'jilapis’, 'halwas’ (sweet dish), 'tehari’, 'biryani’, fruits and salads. In spite of health hazards connected to these savouries people once a year forget the threats and enter the world of gastronomic delights of iftar with relish.
