Event: Syed Mainul, Humayun Ahmed receive Sheltech Award

Architect Syed Mainul Hossain and novelist Humayun Ahmed at a function received the Sheltech Award 2007 for their contribution to their respective fields.

The function was held at the Conference Lounge of the National Press Club on Tuesday.

Eng Kutub Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of Sheltech Ltd, handed over the Sheltech crest to Syed Mainul Hossain, while Faridur Reza Sagar, Managing Director of Impress Telefilm Ltd, gave it to Humayun Ahmed on the occasion. Taufiq M Seraj, Managing Director of Sheltech, also attended the ceremony.

The awardees also received a cheque for Tk 1 lakh each.

While receiving the award, Syed Mainul Hossain, architect of the National Martyrs' Memorial, expressed his happiness on getting the award.

Sheltech introduced the award in 1998 by honouring poet Shamsur Rahman.

Singer Kalim Sharafi, artist Qayyum Chowdhury, singer Feroza Begum, litterateur Rabeya Khatun, sceintific write Muhammad Zafar Iqbal won the award for the following years until 2004 when the company began awarding two personalities every year. Puppeteer Mostafa Monwar and Shykh Seraj get the award for 2004 while Professor Mamtajuddin Ahmed, film director Soovas Dutt, Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed and actor Abul Hayat received the award for 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Ntv will air drama serial 'Brishtir jonno' at 9:45pm today. Pantha Shahriar has scripted the 26-episode drama serial, while Amlan Biswas has directed it.

Aupi Karim, Abul Hayat, Ferdousi Majumder, Tropa Majumder, Shahiduzzaman Selim, Shams Sumon, Shatabdi Wadud, Intekhab Dinar, Raunak Hasan, among others, performed in the serial.

Two striking cinematic essays are providing viewers at the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) lucid glimpses of two different faces of Indian woman.

One of them is based on a real personality while the other is a dramatised version of a true-life incident.

Toronto-based Deepa Mehta's Indo-Canadian production, Heaven On Earth, inspired by life of a victim of domestic violence, narrates the tale of Chand Grewal ( Preity Zinta ), a simple, God-fearing Ludhiana girl who moves to Brampton only to find herself hopelessly trapped in an abusive, loveless marriage.

First-time Australian filmmaker Megan Doneman's 'Yes Madam, Sir,' a documentary about the career of an Indian super cop Kiran Bedi, highlights a courageous woman who fought against odds.

'Heaven on Earth', one more addition to the series of Mehta-directed films that lay bare truths about the status of women in India, is an expanded and stylised version of a documentary film that the director had made a year ago about Punjabi women who moved to Toronto after marriage and ran into a violent husband and unsupportive in-laws.

Mehta's directorial flourishes, marked by a masterly mix of the real and the imaginary, raise an oft-repeated narrative to a completely different level.

Story of Naior:

Soumik Roy Chowdhury is the only son of a landlord. He recently completed his graduation.

His parent is tensed about him. Soumik has no interest about his marriage. His parent decided to marry their son with Mohini.

When the marriage day comes near, Soumik started loving with Madhobi, a daughter of a poor low caste man. Once Soumik's parent knew this and they did not accept their relationship.

Then Soumik married Madhobi.

As a result, Mohini became anger with Madhobi. She did accept their love and happy family life. In the meantime, Mohini could not accept the family members of Soumik. The story goes on.

Hollywood: Minnie Driver gives birth to son in LA

Minnie Driver has given birth to a not-so-little one. Henry Story Driver was born in Los Angeles on Friday and weighed in at a hearty 9 lbs., 12 oz, her publicist Jessica Kolstad told People magazine.

Driver, 38, confirmed that she was pregnant during an appearance on 'The Tonight Show' in March, when host Jay Leno remarked on her baby bump. She has not revealed the name of the father.

Driver stars on the FX cable TV series 'The Riches' with British comedian Eddie Izzard. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the 1997 film 'Good Will Hunting.'
