Cyber centre at DU library

A cyber centre was inaugurated in Dhaka University library yesterday for its teachers, researchers, students, officials and employees.
DU Vice Chancellor Dr. SMA Faiz inaugurated the centre as chief guest. Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr AFM Yusuf Haider was present as special guest.
The centre, having 27 computers, was set up at a cost of Tk 16 lakh from the university's own fund, said a press release.
The centre will remain open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, expect during Ramadan. During the holy month, it will remain open from 9am to 3pm.
Four joint secretaries transferred

The government has transferred four joint secretaries, including the director general of the Chief Adviser's Office, the establishment ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
Director general of the Chief Adviser's Office Mozammel Haque Farhad Khan was appointed as WAQF Estate administrator on deputation.
WAQF director Abu Yusuf Md Hemayet Uddin was made officer on special duty of the establishment ministry. But he will also discharge his duty as a member of the national identity card registration authority maintaining touch with the home ministry.
Fisheries and livestock ministry joint secretary Khorshed Alam Chowdhury was transferred to the ministry of civil aviation and tourism.
The education ministry's 'Reaching out to School Children' project director Moyezuddin Ahmed was transferred to the education ministry as joint secretary.
Ataul Haque, deputy secretary of the ministry of textiles and jute was appointed as project director of 'Reaching out of School Children' on deputation.
JAF protests AL's statement on BNP leaders' release

Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (JAF), a pro-BNP lawyers' organisation, yesterday protested the remarks made by Awami League acting general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on the release of BNP leaders, including its senior joint secretary general Tarique Rahman.
In a statement, the JAF led by BNP Standing Committee member Khandaker Mahbub Uddin Ahmad condemned Syed Ashraful's remarks that "the country is being made dysfunctional by releasing corrupts one after another".
The JAF statement said since it is the jurisdiction of the court to grant bails to the accused in criminal cases, all parties, including AL, are getting the advantage.
It said adverse remarks following the releases of Tarique and some other leaders on bails from higher courts are nothing but conspiracy to make the court dysfunctional.
"The task of establishing a democratic government will be impeded if chaos is created through confusing statements. The result of such action will not be good for anybody," the statement.
6 killed in Rangpur road accidents

Six people were killed and at least 25 others injured in separate road accidents in Sadar and Mithapukur upazilas Friday midnight.
Lalmia, 38, and Aminur Rahman, 27, died on the spot and 28 others wounded as a Sayeedpur bound minibus from Rangpur overturned at Paglapir on Rangpur-Dinajpur highway in Sadar upazla as its driver lost control over the steering of his vehicle.
The injured were admitted to Rangpur Medical College hospital where three of them, Tuku Mia, 37, Jashedul,35, and Jarina, 9, succumbed to injuries after admission.
In another incident, a van puller, Lalmia, 35, was killed as a bus knocked him down when he was crossing road at Mithapukur Bazar on Rangpur-Bogra highway in Mithapukur upazila.
Separate cases were filed with respective police stations.
Saudi Ambassador hosts iftar party

Saudi Ambassador in Dhaka Dr Abdullah Bin Naser Al-Busairi on Friday hosted a high-profile Iftar party at his Gulshan residence in the city.
Political leaders, ambassadors, businessmen, former ministers and MPs, editors and high-ranking civil and military officials attended the function.
The Iftar party was attended, among others, by Awami League Acting President Zillur Rahman, BNP Secretary General Khondoker Delwar Hossain, Jamaat Ameer Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami, Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, AL leaders Amir Hossain Amu and Syed Ashraful Islam, former adviser and Independent Editor Mahbubul Alam, Bangladesh Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Daily Sangram Editor Abul Asad, News Today Editor Reazuddin Ahmed and New Nation Editor Mostafa Kamal Majumder.
