Detained BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has expressed her happiness over her eldest son Tarique Rahman's release at last.

DIG (Prisons) Maj Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told UNB yesterday evening that he met Begum Zia after the release of Tarique and conveyed the message to her.

"We convey such message to a general prisoner too. And we did it. She expressed her happiness," said Major Siddiqui, who is the only one in this job to play host to so many VIPs in his prison houses, including two former premiers and hosts of ministers and lawmakers.

He said the former Prime Minister also expressed her gratitude to the caretaker government for this step in the latest turn of events.

Her younger son Koko had earlier been set free on parole for overseas treatment, after months in detention since they three were arrested amid a crackdown on the political arena following the January 11, 2007 changeover.
