Group art show begins : Celebrating 400 years of Dhaka

NN photo Staff Reporter A group art exhibition of six artists under the banner of 'Walk and Work' was inaugurated at Zainul Gallery of the Institute of Fine Arts of Dhaka University yesterday to celebrate the 400 years of Dhaka as capital city. Artist Rafiqun Nabi, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University, inaugurated the show as chief guest, while eminent sculptor Prof Hamiduzzaman Khan was present as special guest on the occasion. The participant artists are Md Ahkamul Haque Tunir, Md Al-Akhir Sarker, Md Adnan Sufian, SSK Mukaddas Muhammad Shadi Ahmed, Mokadesur, Sadek Ahmed and Md Rashed Kamal Russell. Artist Rafiqunnabi said, "This exhibition will help to recognise the Dhaka city for the young generation and also help to realise the heritage of the city." Everybody should know the history of his country. We are lucky that we have got Dhaka as capital that has a rich heritage of 400 years. For this reason, everybody should come forward to raise the heritage of Dhaka city to all especially for the children, said Rafiqun Nabi. A total of 30 artworks of the six artists are on display at the gallery. Most of the artworks are of watercolour, pen drawing and mixed media. Artist Mukaddas, a participant and organiser of the exhibition, said they had organised a group art exhibition in 2005 which topic was natural beauty of hill areas of the country. "To reminiscence the 400 years of Dhaka we have tried to focus on the rich cultural heritage of Dhaka as a capital city," he said. The exhibition will cover all-important structures of the Dhaka city, which were built during the Mughal period. In the works of Ahkamul Haque, he portrayed the architectural beauty of Chawkbazar, Akhir Sarker represented the old structures of Shakharibazar and Adnan Sufian sketched aesthetics view of the Farashganj area. Mukaddas sketched a drawing of Curzon Hall, while Rashed Kamal Russell portrayed the St Gregory High School with mixed media in the show. The gallery remains open 12:00 noon to 8:00pm everyday.
