"The phenomenon of climate change is not a myth but a hard scientific reality," said the chief adviser while addressing the closing session of the six-day `International Symposium on Climate Change and Food Security in South Asia' at Sonargaon Hotel in the city.  |
17 injured in Chhatra League-Shibir clash in Bogra: Zia Medical College closed sine die

Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College was yesterday closed for indefinite period following clashes between the activists of the student fronts of Awami League and Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday night that left 17 wounded. The college authorities also asked the residential students to vacate all the hostels by 5pm after a closed-door meeting of the college administration at noon. Police and witnesses said when Kollol, an activist of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) mentioned in the comment book that the food served in the dinning-room of the hostel as substandard, dining manager Shaikat, also a Chhatra League (BCL) activist, flew into a rage and beat him up at about 9:30 pm.  |

RAB Director General Hasan Mahmud Khandokar said yesterday security agencies had reinforced their drive against crimes and disturbances in the city ahead of the holy month of Ramzan. The DG said plans were underway to put tough measures in place to make the city dwellers' life comfortable throughout the holy month. "The law enforcing agencies have already started conducting special drive ahead of Ramzan," he told reporters after attending the annual general meeting of Bangladesh Police Cooperative Society (Polwel) for 2006-2007 fiscal year at Rajarbagh Police Lines.  |
Bangladesh, India Home Secy-level talks begin: Border, security issues on agenda

Bangladesh stressed on resolving border and security issues while India insusted for an extradition treaty with Bangladesh, as the Dhaka-Delhi Home Secretary level talks kicked off at Hotel Sheraton in the city yesterday. The two sides put on the table various proposals to tackle cross-border crimes, halt killing of innocent civilians and demarcate common boundary. . "Curbing criminals activities, narcotics smuggling and trafficking in women and children, and the Tin Bigha Corridor will be discussed in the meeting," Bangladesh Home Secretary Abdul Karim said, ahead of the meeting.  |
Onrush of upstream water: Ganges, Brahmaputra basins brace for floods

The overall flood situation in the country has turn alarming and it is likely to deteriorate during the next 2-3 days as the major rivers have continued to rise along with the north eastern rivers, swelled by heavy rains for the past few days, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) officials said. Both the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma have been swelled upstream and the north eastern rivers in Sylhet region gone in spate due to heavy rains at home and across the border have also put pressure on the upper Meghna.  |
Rabirashmi’s cultural festival ends

The three-day cultural festival organised by Rabirashmi, a cultural organisation, ended at the Shawkat Osman Auditorium of the Central Public Library in the city yesterday. Rabirashmi organised the festival to celebrate its 10 years of practicing and promoting Rabindra Sangeet. The programmes featured presentation of Tagore songs and poetry by the artistes of Rabirashmi at the festival. On the concluding day of the festival yesterday, besides musical presentation Rabirashmi staged Nrityanatya 'Shyama' at the Central Public Library.  |
