Janmastami
The 'Bhagavad Gita' states that when evil power holds this world under its sway to protect virtue and innocence from the violence and cruelties of that power Lord Krishna comes to this world to establish religion in its true glory by purging the evil. The Hindu community all over the world celebrates such a descent to earth by Lord Krishna on the eighth waning night of the Bengali month 'Bhadra' during Rohini Nakshatra. This event is known as Janmastami.
The celebrations begin with fasts commencing on the previous day. After morning prayers and worship, devotees break the fast with 'prasadam' (food that has first been offered to God). In Dhaka the event is extensively celebrated at the Dhakeshwari Temple through several religious events. Other temples around the city also organize religious events like Kirtan, Geeta Jagna, and special prayers to mark the day. Apart from this special rallies are brought out in different parts of the city where children dress up as Lord Krishna.
