News briefs Project taken for palm tree cultivation BENAPOLE (Jessore), Aug 27: A pilot project has been taken up to bring some 99.14 bighas of land under palm tree cultivation in the district to produce palm oil. The project was inaugurated in Jhikargachha uapzila Saturday by Commander of the Joint Force Lt. Col. M Tanvir Iqbal. Under the project, 7.5 bighas of land will be brought under palm tree cultivation in Sadar upazila, 30 bighas in Jhikargachha, 17 bighas in Chougachh, 6 bighas in Bagharpara, 11.5 bighas in Sharsa and 27.14 bighas in Kesabpur upazila. A total of 1905 saplings were planted on the first day in Sadar, Jhikargachha, Sharsa, Chougachh, Bagharpara and Kesabpur upazilas of the district. Army and land owners have been implementing the project jointly, reports UNB. Father hands over drug addict son to police in Sylhet SYLHET, Aug 27: A father handed over his drug addict son to police at Mirarpara in the city on Friday. The annoyed father Jamir Ali also filed a case against the spoilt son Jiblu Mia with Kotwali police station. Police said Jiblu Mia, 22, used to steal valuables and torture his family members for refusing to pay him money for buying drugs. They said few days back he hacked his father with a 'dao' leaving him critically injured when he rebuked Jiblu for his unruly activities. When produced the court sent Jiblu to jail hajat on Saturday, reports UNB. 3 held with fake currency DINAJPUR, Aug 27: Rapid Action Battalion members arrested three people along with fake currency notes worth Tk 10,000 from a house in Rajbari area of the district town Friday. The arrested are Rezaul Islam, 35, Rafiqul Islam, 30, and Romali, 30. Acting on secret information, a RAB team raided the house of Rezaul Islam and arrested him along with his two accomplices and recovered the fake notes of various denominations from their possession. A case was filed with the police, reports UNB. Clash leaves 20 injured in Moulvibazar MOULVIBAZAR, Aug 27: At least 20 people were injured and 10 shops damaged in a clash between two rival groups at Sherpur here on Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Saturday. Police said two young men - one from Bahadurpur village of Moulvibazar and another from Khasrupur of Sylhet - locked into an altercation while going to the 1st floor of Sherpur Foisal Market on Friday evening. Later, supporters of both the groups equipped with roads and sticks attacked each other Saturday noon, leaving 20 people from both sides injured. The attackers also damaged 10 shops during the one hour long clash. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The injured were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and Moulvibazar sadar hospital, reports UNB. Phensidyl recovered in Dinajpur, 3 held DINAJPUR, Aug 27: BDR jawans in separate drives recovered 720 bottles of Indian phensidyl syrup from different areas of Birampur upazila on Friday night and Saturday. BDR sources said on secret information they conducted drives at Puratan Bazaar, Katla and Ghatrpara areas from Friday night to Saturday 10am and arrested three drug peddlers along with the phensidyl syrup. The arrested are Rashid, 32, Kamela Bewa, 40, and Mafizuddin, 35. In another drive the border guards also recovered 96 sacks of Indian substandard Potash fertilizer in an abandoned condition at Ochintapur in Fulbari upazila on Saturday morning, reports UNB.
