Talented students urged to acquire proper knowledge to build corruption - free society

Speakers at a reception here said the talented students must acquire knowledge as there is no alternative to acquiring proper knowledge for building a prosperous, developed and corruption-free country.

Teachers, students, guardians and the civil society members have moral obligation and responsibility for make the educational institutions the knowledge acquiring centres, they added.

They said this on Wednesday at a warm reception ceremony accorded to the scholarship winner students of Begum Rokeya Shishu Niketan (BRSN) at Mithapukur Upazila town, who got scholarships of the North Bengal Kindergarten and Pre-cadet School Society.

A colourful ceremony was organised on the occasion in the Begum Rokeya auditorium of Mithapukur Upazila Parishad with Assistant Commissioner (Land) of the upazila Rafikul Islam Selim in the chair.

Mithapukur UNO AKM Masuduzzaman was present as the chief guest while Latifpur UP Chairman Prof Hafizur Rahman and Principal of BRSN Prof Shah Mahbubur Rahman attended the function as the special guests.

Upazila level government officials, teachers, students, guardians, local elite, professionals, public representatives, community leaders and the awardee students were present.

Later, the chief guest distributed awards and certificates among a total of 59 brilliant students of the institution, including 20, who got talent pool scholarships and other 39 of the general grade scholarships.

College official held for taking bribe in Barisal

Task force of Anti Corruption Commission trapped and caught red handed Bhabotosh Haldar, 44, the head assistant of Govt. Barisal College of the city on Tuesday noon for taking bribe from another office staff of the college.

Major Shahriar, director of Barisal divisional ACC, said that Akbar Hossain, an office peon of the college lodged written complain with the ACC on Monday that his enemies inclined him with a incident of mass dacoity at Charkawa area in 2005 and police biased by the his opponents arrested him for his alleged involvement with the crime.

The education directorate suspended Akbor until the trial of the case to be completed and he acquitted from the charge by the court after found non-guilty on January 2008 and authority permitted him to join I service.

According he joined in his service at the same post in the same college on April 2008.

But the head assistant of the college demanded 10 thousand taka as bribe from him for forwarding file of giving arrear dues of his salaries.

After receiving allegation ACC team led by Md. Rahamatullah, assistant deputy director, set a trap to catch the corrupt official on Tuesday noon.

Bhabotosh Haldar was caught red handed by the ACC men while received Tk.3000 pre-marked currency notes as first installment of the bribe from Akbor Hossain.

Bhabotosh was handed over to Kotwali police station at evening after primary interrogation by ACC and lodge a case by Akbor Hossain as complainant under ACC act.

Prof. A K M Mojibor Rahman, principal of the college, acknowledging the fact, said that he knew nothing about demanding bribe for forwarding arrear salary file of Akbor and accused Bhabotosh was suspended after his arrest by the law enforcers.

6 sentenced to life-term in a murder case in Joypurhat

Six people were sentenced to life term imprisonment by a court here on Wednesday in sensational Siddiqur Rahman murder case, eight years back.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more in jail.

The lifers are Jahurul Islam, 41, elder brother of Siddiqur Rahman, Mohammad Ali, 55, Faruk Hossain, 35, Rabiul Islam, 28, Saiful Islam, 34, and Abdul Wahed Dulu, 42.

According to the prosecution, Siddiqur Rahman, 38, of Pashchim Parulia village in Sadar upazila went to neighbouring village to borrow money from a man on October 27, 2000 but he did not return home on the day.

His body was recovered from a paddy field of the village on the following day. It was learnt that the convicts killed Siddiqur in a planned way over a love affair.

Siddiqur's younger brother Zillur Rahman later filed a murder case with Sadar thana in this connection.

After investigation police submitted charge-sheet against the six people.

District and Sessions Judge Abdul Hamid after examining the records and witnesses pronounced the verdict in the crowded courtroom.

2 held with 'ganja' in Narail

A team of Sadar thana police arrested two brothers with 4 kg hemp (ganja) from a village of Narail on Sunday.

The arrestees are Ashoke Biswas,31, and Poritosh Biswas,28 Son of Pulin Biswas of Shuvarghop village under sadar upazila. Duty officer of Narail police station Sub Inspector Anil Mukharjee said, acting on a tip off, a police team raided the house of Pulin Biswas and areested his two sons .According to their confession police recovered 4 kilogram hemp and a case was filed with Narail police station in this connection.

Drug peddlers held, 2 private cars recovered in Jessore

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-6) Jessore recovered two private cars and Phensidyl in separate drives on 14th August. They also arrested two drug traders during this period.

According to RAB-6 sources, on the morning two drug traders were going to Dhaka from Benapole when on a secret information RAB members led by Abdul Halim ambushed the Jessore-Magura road near WAPDA Square and stopped two private cars and after searching they recovered 350 bottles of Indian Phensidyl from the cars. They also arrested Arif Rahman Liton who hails from Sarsha and Lutfor Rahman from Madaripur.

4 awarded life-term for killing girl after rape in Dinajpur

UNB, Dinajpur

A special court here Wednesday convicted four people and awarded them life term imprisonment for killing a teenage girl after rape in 2000.

The court also fined the convicts Mominul, 25, Ajhar, 28, Shah Alam, 30, and Saifur, 27 Tk 1 lakh each, in default, to suffer three years more RI.

According to the prosecution, the accused entered the house of Ismat Ara, 15, daughter of a day- labourer, after cutting the fence of their house at dead of night, raped her one after another and strangulated her to death at Jannat crossing in sadar upazila on September 16, 2000.

Victim's father Nazir Hossain filed a case.

After examining the records and witnesses Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Badsha Alamgir handed down the verdict.

One awarded death penalty for murder in Bagerhat

Bagerhat, Aug 21 : A court here Wednesday convicted a man and awarded him death penalty for killing a man in 2004. The convict, Ayub Ali, was on the dock when Additional District and Sessions Judge M Rezaul Karim pronounced the verdict. According to the prosecution, Ayub Ali chopped Sarfaraz Shikder, owner of a fish enclosure, to death following an altercation over stealing fish from Sarfarz's enclosure at Gaoala village in Mollahat upazila on April26, 2004. Police arrested Ayub and a case was filed. The judge handed down the verdict after examining 15 witnesses and records , report UNB.

Youth killed in crocodile attack in Bagerhat

Bagerhat, Aug 21: A young man was killed in a crocodile attack in a large pond beside the mazar of Khan Jahan Ali® here Wednesday. Police recovered the floating bruised body of Rubel Sheikh, 25, from the lake on Thursday. Police said Rubel came to visit the mazar along with his mother Firoza Begum. When he went to the pond for taking bath a crocodile attacked and dragged him deep into it on Wednesday night. Local divers could not recover the body despite overnight operation in the pond. The body of Rubel was found floating in the pond this morning. The crocodile devoured most parts of his body, report UNB.

Coast Guard seizes timber in Bagerhat

Bagerhat, Aug 21 : Coast Guard members, in a drive, seized a timber laden trawler from Panguchhi river in Morelganj upazila Wednesday. Acting on secret information, a team of Coast Guard conducted operation in the river and seized Sunduri timber worth Tk 2 lakh from a trawler. Sensing presence of the Coast Guards the smugglers managed to flee the scene, report UNB.

Clash leaves one dead in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, Aug 21: A middle aged man, who was critically injured by his rival here on Monday night died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) Tuesday. The victim was identified as Humayun Kabir, 42, of Hasnarpara village in Polashbari upazila. Police said there was a longstanding dispute between Humayun Kabir and his relation Shahjahan Ali over the ownership of an ancestral pond. On the fateful night at about 10pm they locked into an altercation over fishing in the pond. At one stage Shahjahan Ali hit Kabir with a sharp weapon, leaving him critically injured, reports UNB.
