More attention to youth community emphasised

Speakers at a seminar here on Tuesday called for giving more attention to the youth community as they represent about one-third of the total population of the country.

They said the problems Bangladesh is facing would be largely resolved if the merit and talent of the youth community is properly utilized in the country's development process to achieve desired results in the national economy.

Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Dr Md Golam Mustafa Talukder was the chief guest while UNFPA representative Pornchai Suchitta was the Special Guest at the seminar.

It was organised to observe the International Youth Day 2008 with Md Nasiruddin Ahmed, Director (Admin) of the Department of Youth, in the chair. A large number of young people as well as their parents and policy makers attended the seminar, a UNFPA press release said.

National Programme Officer of UNFPA Dr Noor Mohammad presented the keynote paper, giving focus on climate change as well as the key responsibility of the youth in combating its affects.

Referring to the thematic issue of the International Youth Day, Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action, Dr Noor suggested several measures for the youth community, saying they should be engaged in all development works to play their active role for the country's economic progress side by side with checking adversities of the climate change.

"Youth community is the most potential segment of our society and they should be given priority in the mainstream of development," he said and urged all concerned to put in their best efforts in protecting the poor people from the wrath of climate change in the country.

Pornchai Suchitta called for 'Youth-Adult Partnership' to achieve real development. 'We need to hear them before we come to any conclusion about them', he added describing the 'youth' as the key persons in the UNFPA programmes allover the world.

Earlier, A colorful rally was brought out with banners and festoons to mark the occasion. Dr Golam Mostafa Talukder led the procession.

Newsman dead

Mujibur Rahman, News Editor, The Good Morning, died in the city on August 9 last. He was suffering from paralysis for a long time. He was 59, says a press release.

Brother of the journalist Matiur Rahman, he began his career as Sub-Editor of The Bangladesh Observer, and later served The Daily Star as Mofussil and Commerce Editor. He also served the Weekly Evidence, fortnightly The Bangladesh Monitor and Proshika where he was Senior Executive.

Mujibur Rahman is survived by two sisters and two brothers to mourn his death.

A Doa Mahfil was held at the Mirpur residence of his sister on Sunday for the peace of his departed soul.

Matiur's anniversary of death observed

The 31st anniversary of death of Matiur Rahman, former Chief Reporter of defunct Bangladesh Times and the Weekly Holiday was observed on Sunday last, says a press release.

Khatme Quran and milad mahfil was held at the residence of his sister at Mirpur in city to pray for peace of the departed soul.

Matiur Rahman joined Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as its Public Relations Chief and Bangladesh Biman as its Public Relations Manager. He worked as a stringer of the New York Times. He was also related with Sandhani Prokashani till his death.

AIT president visits MIST

The president Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand Prof. Said Irandoust visited Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) at Mirpur Cantonment on Tuesday, says an ISPR press release.

During the visit effective discussion was held about academic extension programme, faculty exchange programme, joint research seminar, symposium, workshop etc. This visit will play a vital role for enhanced mutual co-operation in higher technical education between AIT and MIST in future.

Later, Commandant MIST, Major General Abdul Wadud briefed on activities of MIST to AIT President at MIST Conference room. Senior officers of MIST were present on the occasion.
