BCC mayor-elect vows to ensure corruption-free citizen services

The mayor-elect in Barisal City Corporation, Shawkat Hossain Hiron, on Thursday vowed to rid off the organisation from all sorts of corruption and said he would start his new assignment through the fulfillment of basic needs of the people in most neglected wards of BCC.
While talking with journalists he said that he will never announce any unrealistic promise, but will try whole heartedly to run BCC by best using of limited resources with transparency and accountability.
Planned urbanization would be my motto and to serve the citizen I shall work as their servant, not as the father of the city, Hiron announced.
'I have already identified 10 most neglected wards where the dwellers are deprived of their basic needs from the city corporation,' the mayor-elect told.
The mayor-elect also assuring to give priority in supplying safe water for the city dwellers said he would make conservancy department stronger and take effective measures for managing the garbage.
Admitting that the roads of the corporation were in bad shape, Hiron assured to repair those gradually.
He said that he would start taking action against corrupt officials and employees of the corporation after his taking office.
'I shall take action against the corrupt officials and employees of the corporation who were involved with corruptions', Hiron said.
Hiron, also an Awami League leader, claimed that the past mayor had failed to fulfil the demands and aspirations of the city people and his election had been a result of this.
Replying to newsmen, Hiron said that he would not tolerate any favoritism and act neutrally coming out of party politics.
'I will work with all the newly elected corporation councilors defying their nepotism political identity to make a better Barisal city,' he asserted.
He also pledged to work for the city dwellers irrespective of party and opinion affiliations.
'The corporation will be open to all and I shall regularly meet with the city dwellers in the corporation to listen to their complaints and suggestions,' Hiron declared.
Hiron earlier visited different wards of BCC and thanked the people for voting him and sought assistance from all quarters to perform his responsibilities.
Narail Poura corruption: ACC files 7 cases against Mayor, 26 others

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a total of seven cases against all public representatives, several officials and contractors of Narail Municipality with Narail Police Station on Thursday night.
Wajed Ali Gazi, ACC Deputy Director of Jessore, filed these cases against Advocate Sohrab Hossain Biswas, Mayor along with other 25 persons. They are accused of corruption and misappropriation of irregular allotment of Municipality markets, irregularity in road and market construction, grafting lease money from Poura hat-bazaars, grafting huge government grant money, marking bills and vouchers against false projects. These were filed for grafting a total of Tk 32, 87,122. Among the accuseds, six cases against Advocate Sohrab Hossain Biswas, Mayor of Narail Municipality, 4 cases against Khondaker Al Monsur Billah, 3 cases against poura councillor Sharful Alam Litu, Ahmed Ali Khan, Telaet Hossain and Syed Mushfikur Rahman Bachchu, ex-Assistant Engineer Oaziur Rahman, ex-official Motiar Rahman, 2 cases against Poura councilor Zahangir Biswas, Rajibul Islam and Kazal Lata, Ex-assistant Engineer Nazir Ahmed, Sub-assistant engineer Alauddin Mina and Contractor Anisuzzaman, case against Poura Councillor Saiful Islam, Rafikul Islam, Epi Rani Biswas and Joyonti Rani Halder and contractor Abdul Mukit Lablu, Tazir Ahmed, Radhe Rani Kundu, Abdul Mukit Lablu, Bablu Basu, Izazul Islam Babu, Rubel Miah, Toufikur Rahman Mamun, Sohel Rana Palash, Zillur Rahman have been filed with Narail Sadar Police station.
Sylhet City Corporation polls: AL gets 13 posts of councillors, BNP 9

The winning candidates in the posts of councillors in August 4 elections in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) have started expressing their gratitude to the voters going door to door, as they could not bring out victory processions.
Some of the councilors-elect organised 'milad mahfils' to express gratitude to the Almightily Allah for their victory.
Besides clinching the mayoral post, the Awami League-backed candidates have bagged 13 posts of general councillors in the SCC while the BNP leaning candidates got nine and Jamaat-e-Islami three posts. Two independent candidates have also been elected councillors.
Of the five reserved seats for women, the Awami League nagged five posts of the councilors while the BNP the remaining four.
The Awami League backed councillors are: Abdul Khaleq, Ward No: 3, Mohiuddin Lokman, Ward No :7, Jagadis Das Ward No: 8, Mokhlesur Rahman Kamran, Ward No: 9, Abdur Rakib Babul, Ward No: 11, Faizul Anwar Alaol, Ward No: 17, ABM Zillur Rahman Ujjal, Ward No: 18, Azadur Rahman Azad, Ward No: 20, Sazzadur Rahman Sujjad, Ward No: 21, Saleh Ahmed Selim, Ward No: 22, M Shajahan, Ward No: 24, and Ashik Ahmed (Ward No 25). 3 held with Ganja in Rangpur

Detective Branch (DB) of Police arrested three drug smugglers and seized smuggled ganja in two separate drives conducted at different places here last night, Police sources said.
The DB police seized 500 gram ganja and arrested Monwar Hossain, 45, and Sirajul Islam, 40 from village Deodoba and Abdul Halim, 45, with 500 gram ganja from Burirhat area in Sadar Upazila in the drives.
The DB police handed over the arrested persons and seized ganja after filing two separate cases in these connections with Kotwali Police Station, the sources said.
Phensidyl, win seized in Ctg

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in separate raids recovered 358 bottles Phensidyl and 16 bottles foreign wine in the city on Wednesday night and Thursday.
Being tipped off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive at Tourna Nishita train at Chittagong rail station on Thursday and recovered 358 bottles of phensidyl in an abandoned state at a room in the train.
In another drive at Charpara area of Patenga Thana in the city on Wednesday night, they recovered 16 bottles of foreign- made 'Kingway' wine in an abandoned position.
Illegal structures owned by BNP MP demolished in Jhenidah

Illegal structures belonging to a former BNP MP were demolished in Jhenidah on Wednesday last.
Sources said, Jhenidah Roads and Highway Department on the day bulldozed all structures owned by former BNP MP and Jhenidah District BNP President Mashiur Rahman.
Mashiur during his tenure built these structures misusing his power on the government land in Jhenidah Poura area.
After State of Emergency Moshiur remained absconding as the Anti-Corruption Commission filed case against him for amassing wealth illegally.
Robbers loot cash, valuables in Patuakhali

Robbers stormed into a house in Dibuapur area of the district town and looted cash and valuables worth Tk 5 lakh on Tuesday midnight.
Sources said the bandits numbering 10/12 entered into the rented house of Nannu Mridha breaking the door open and took the house inmates hostage at gun point. They later looted Tk 1.75 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, mobile phone sets and other valuables from the house.
Hearing the hue and cry of the inmates' police and local people chased the robbers while fleeing and arrested five of them. They were identified as Sujib and Hasan of Barguna, Babul Sardar of Pirojpur and Arif and Aminul of Shariatpur district.
3 suspected robbers lynched in Jessore

Three suspected robbers were killed and two others suffered critically injuries when a group of villagers beat them up mercilessly suspecting them as robbers at Narendrapur Rupdia Railgate on Khulna-Jessore highway here at about 11 Friday night.
Police and Hospital sources said dead were identified as Abdur Rouf, 52, Kamrul, 25, and Majed, 25, and injured Shahidul, 30, and Masud, 28. All of them hail from Jessore Sadar Upazila of the district.
The sources said suspected muggers were coming from Monirampur Bazar by the private car and refused to stop the vehicle as the locals there challenged them. The villagers then informed the matter to their fellows at Razarhat and Rupdia Bazar over cell phones.
Being informed, the agitated villagers waylaid the car Rupdai and beat up the onboard five mercilessly.

16 hurt in joypurhat road mishap
Joypurhat, Aug 9 : At least 16 members of a bridal party were injured in a road accident on Joypurhat-Bogra Highway at Taltoli in Khetlal upazila Friday. Witnesses said a CNG-run pick up van, carrying the bridal party, rammed into a roadside tree in the afternoon as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving 16 people injured. The injured were admitted to the Sadar Hospital. Of them Ismail was shifted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital following the deterioration of his condition. The bridal party was going to Chaksham village in Sadar upazila of the district from Mokamtala village in Bogra district. report UNB.
Drug peddler arrested with Yaba tablets in N'ganj
Narayanganj, Aug 6 : Police arrested a drug peddler along with 190 Yaba tablets from a bus at Shimrail crossing in Siddhirganj upazila on Tuesday night. The arrested was identified as Javed, 29, son of Kabir Ahmed of Firingibazar area of Comilla Sadar upazila. Acting on a tip-off, Siddhirganj thana Sub-Inspector Ashraf Hossain raided the Dhaka-bound bus of Tisha Paribahan coming from Comilla and recovered the sex stimulating tablets from his possession. A case was filed, report UNB.
Teacher sentenced to two years for cheating in Gopalganj
Gopalganj, Aug 9 : A court here on Thursday sentenced a college teacher to two years rigorous imprisonment for the crime of forging certificate and cheating. Chief Judicial Magistrate Dilip Kumar Bhoumik also fined the convict Sri Krishna Baruri Tk 3 lakh, in default, to suffer three months RI more. Sri Krishna Baruri joined the Jolirpar Bangaratna College in Muksudpur upazila as lecturer showing fake certificates in August 1986. The forgery was unearthed after an investigation in 2000 and a case was filed against him, report UNB.
