Special: SM Sultan’s 84th birth anniversary observed

The 84th birth anniversary of renowned artist SM Sultan observed yesterday at his village home in Narail.
Masumdia village in Narail where he was born on 10 August 1924 and built his 'Shishu Swarga' or 'heaven for children' weared a festive look with various organisations chalked out various programmes to celebrate the birthday.
The SM Sultan National Birth Celebration Committee 2008 has chalked out day-long elaborate programmes to mark the birthday of the celebrated painter, who devoted more than half of his lifetime to painting in solitude.
On this day in 1924, Sultan nicknamed Lal Mia, was born in an ordinary family of Masumdia village in Narail. Sultan hit the headlines in the art world much before the people of his own homeland knew him as a painter. His paintings were exhibited in Simla of India in 1946, Lahore and Karachi of Pakistan in 1948-49, New York, Washington DC, Boston, Chicago, London and Michigan University in 1959, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1976 and German Cultural Centre, Dhaka in 1986. His artworks were jointly shown in Victoria Embankment, London in 1953 and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in 1993 with nine famous artists' artworks.
He joined the International Conference of Painters in America in 1950 as the representative of the Pakistan Government. He also spent some years in Kolkata, studying and paintings. Later he sank into obscurity and settled in Narail in 1953, devoting his time to painting nature at his village home until his death on October 10, 1994.
Leading a very simple life far away from the madding crowd at his village home, the selfless painter spent most of his life completely engrossed in paint and brush.

Story of Horek Ronger Mon:
Oneday Natya Shahid, son of Ramiz Khan, and Mir Chand reached at the door of their house early in the morning after watching play.
They found Ramiz Khan was in anger mood to see them. But they handle the situation. At night two brothers were shouting 'fire, fire' as dialogue of the play. As a result, their father became anger. But the two persons were planning to stage a new show. They decided that in the new show they will cast a female as female as heroine. For this reason, they started to find out a girl for their show. The story went on with various comedy scenarios.

Saiful Bari has written the drama serial directed by Kamal Khan. Nasir Ahmed made the script.
Zahid Hasan, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Rumana, Shams Sumon, Sajal, Prova, Nisho, Saberi Alam, Zahid Hossain Shovon, Nushrat Yasmin Tisha, Mishti, Rahi, Russell O'Neel, Tushar Mahmud, Daud Rony, Mahmud Sajjad, Khaleda Akhter Kalpana, maong others, performed in different roles in the serial.
Story of Swapnamongal:
Our society is moving with two opposite socio-economic realities. Even in cultural field this movement is clearly identified.
In one hand, a higher class of people who are passing days without any moral value and they are following the western culture, which is not appropriate to our real life.
Young generation is facing trouble with this culture. But we have our own culture.

Recently shooting of the drama serial has been completed in various locations of Natak Sarani, Bailey Road and Shilpakala Academy.

Bollywood: Bipasha is Gili’s new brand ambassador

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu, who featured in this year's hit 'Race,' was on Friday appointed as the new brand ambassador of leading jewellery brand Gili.
"Diamonds are a girl's best friend and Gili offers a wide range of diamonds to choose from. I hope this association is amiable and mutually profitable," Bipasha said in a press statement. The actress has proved her mettle in films like 'Corporate' and 'Omkara' and will be seen romancing Bollywood's new entrant Ranbir Kapoor in 'Bachna Ae Haseeno.'
The brand Gili had earlier been acquired by Gitanjali Group, one of India's largest integrated diamond and jewellery manufacturer and retailer.
Mehul Choksi, Chairman Gitanjali Group and Nakshatra, feels that Bipasha epitomises what Gili stands for.
"In our effort to find the right brand ambassador for Gili - a brand of mass appeal, we have stumbled upon the gorgeous and vivacious actress Bipasha Basu to endorse her alluring personality on its products, which is a rhapsody of the traditional and modern. We are excited about having her on board as the new face for Gili," said Choksi.
Pathanatak Utsab ends

A three-day street theatre festival titled 'Pathanatak Utsab' organised by Bangladesh Pathanatak Parishad began at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city on Friday.
The festival featured plays on the trial of the country's 'hated' war criminals.
AK Khandaker, Deputy Chief of the Liberation War Forces, inaugurated the festival as chief guest.
Asaduzzaman Noor, President of Bangladesh Abritty Samunnay Parishad, M Hamid, President of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Golam Kaddus, General Secretary of Bangladesh Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, among others, were present at the inauguration of the theatre festival.
Eminent drama activist Mannan Hira chaired the ceremony. Speakers asked the government for the trial of the war criminals soon.
They vowed to continue the movement until the war criminals are tried in Bangladesh.
Five theatre groups - Nabashikha Natyadal, Natyakutir, Abayab Naty-adal, Antarnga Theatre and Opera staged dramas later.
The theatre festival was ended yesterday.
