Event: Chand Sultana Literacy Award given

The 'Chand Sultana Literacy Award' giving ceremony organised by Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) was held at its premises in the city recently.

This year Parul Begum of Rangpur received the award.

Dr MR Khan and Matiur Rahman, Editor of daily Prothom Alo, were present as guests in the award giving ceremony, while Kazi Rafiqul Alam, President of Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM), chaired the function.

Speakers appreciated the initiative of the DAM to award the people who made contribution in increasing literacy in the country.

They said that they should recognise common people's contribution in promoting literacy.

Parul Begum, wife of a landless farmer in Rangpur, has been running a school for young children in her house since 2001. She received a cheque of Taka 30,000, a crest and certificate.

The organisers informed the media that they are encouraging people who are working to eradicate illiteracy from the country by giving the award.

They have introduced the award after the name of their deceased colleague Chand Sultana who developed some modules on literacy. Chand Sultana died from cancer.
