Load-shedding hits normal life in Kurigram

More than half lakh consumers of Kurigram-Lalmonirhat Palli Biddut Samitee (KLPBS) have been suffering from load shedding daily from the beginning of the summer. As a result, normal lives including business transaction and education activities of the students are being hampered seriously in Kurigram district.

Only one-third electricity than total demand are being supplied at present. At least 12 hours load shedding is going on here daily in each power feeder out of 24 feeders under KLPBS. As a result, studies of school and college students are being hampered seriously. Besides, normal lives have been paralysed.

The production of mills and factories are hampering due to load shedding. The owners of rice mills are not supplying rice as per government order. As a result, rice procurement is also being hampered .

In nine upazilas of Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts like Chilmari, Ulipur, Rajarhat, Fulbari, Nageswari, Bhurungamari, Kurigram Sadar, Aditmari and Lalmonirhat Sadar upazilas under the KLPBS. There are about 65 thousand consumers of residential, commercial and other sectors and the ranges of electric supply line in 2,805 kilometres which is supplied with 24 feeders in six sub-stations.

Sources said, the demand of electricity of the KLPBS is 16 mega watts in pick hour and 12 Mw to 14 Mw in off pick hour. But only 5 Mw to 5.5 Mw in pick hour and 3 Mw to 3.5 Mw in off pick hour of electricity are being supplied at present. As a result, load shedding is going on in full swing

Kurigram Power Development Board (PDB) officials said the total demand of electricity is 4.5 Mw and 3.5 Mw in pick hour and off pick hour respectively but they are being received only 3 Mw and 2 Mw in Office hour and off pick hour respectively.

On the other hand, District Food Controller of Kurigram Abu Bakar Siddik told our correspondent that the target of rice procurement has been fixed at 27,280 metric tones. A total of 368 millers were contracted to supply 25,227 Mt of rice but the millers have supplied 18,294 Mt of rice till now due to load shedding.

General Manager (GM) of the KLPBS Manjurur Rashid told that the matter of load shedding has been informed to higher authority concerned where as early as possible it will be solved.

3 killed in Sylhet road mishap

UNB, Sylhet

Three people were killed and another was injured in a head on collision between two trucks at Darbasta in Jointapur upazila of the district on Tuesday.

The dead were identified as Shamsul Huq Ziku, 20, son of Fenchuganj upazila BNP president Ajmal Ali, truck driver Yusuf Ali, 25, of Panishail village in Rajnagar upazila of Moulvibazar district and truck helper Mohammad Piklu, 20.

Police said the accident occurred as the sand carrying truck, owned by Ajmal Ali, with his son Ziku on board collided with another truck coming from Sarighat area leaving Ziku, driver Yusuf, helper Picklu and a passerby, Alimuddin, critically injured.

Later, Ziku died on way to Dhaka and Yusuf on way to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and Piklu at the same hospital.

Recruitment process before launching new department at RU alleged

The Rajshahi University (RU) is going to launch a new department called "Banking and Insurance" violating UGC instruction of recruitment teachers and officials.

From the beginning of the recruitment process the department is facing some troubles including several complains against the process of recruitment.

Sources alleged that, The University authority wanted on a letter of 26-07-08 some teachers from RU Finance and banking dept while the department has only 13 teachers against 600 students. Four Jammat-BNP backed teachers of the department wanted to go the new department for dominating the department without positive thinking Finance and Banking department sources also alleged.

Sources alleged that, before founding a new dept. University authority have to appoint a chairman. But in this side the authority have not fill up the post. Several BNP backed and AL backed planning committee member of Finance and Banking department requested the authority not to shift more than two teachers from the department on several times by letter and conversation with RU VC.

Sources alleged that, Professor Afrauzzaman Khan, Raihana Ansari, Professor Zahid Hossain and Sohel Rana wanted to shift on the department who are the teachers of Finance and Banking dept.

While communicated Professor Afrauzzaman Khan, Raihana Ansari, Prof. Zahid Hossain and Sohel Rana they declined this kind of complain.

While communicated RU Vice-Chancellor Professor M Mamnunul Keramat, he said to this reporter that, if there is no expert of the related field on left landed political team, AL or Progotisil Shikkhok Somaj (PSS) what could the authority do? He also declined all of the partism on the sector.

Porter killed in road mishap in Satkhira

UNB, Satkhira

A porter was crushed under the wheels of a bus at the town's central bus terminal on Monday.

The victim was identified as Salman, 55, son of late Sakir Ali of Pourashava area, also a porter of the bus terminal.

Police and witnesses said Salman while loading goods of a passenger on a bus, the driver suddenly moved the bus backwards leaving him critically injured.

He was rushed to the sadar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries few hours later.

Taj Mohammad Shamim and Shafali Begum got G.P.A-5 (Golden) at the S.S.C Examination held in 2008 from Hazi Ayet Ali Bhuiyan High School of Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj. Their father Idris Ali Bhuiyan is a petty employee of a Non-government organisation and mother Momtaj Begum is a housewife. Their residence is in Rasulpur village of this Upazila.

345 GPA-5 achievers accorded reception in Satkhira

SATKHIRA, Aug 8: Some 345 students who obtained GPA-5 in this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in the district were given a warm reception on Monday. The Daily Prothom Alo organized the function at the Sadar upazila auditorium. Local educationist Rafiqul Islam chaired the occasion while deputy commissioner Kefayet Ullah was present as chief guest, reports UNB.

Decomposed body recovered in Chandpur

CHANDPUR, Aug 8: Decomposed body of a young man was found at a ditch at Dingabhanga village in Matlab South upazila Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Ismail, 25, son of Mohammad Ilyas of the village. Family sources said Ismail went missing since some miscreants called him out of his grocery shop three days back. Police said being informed by locals they recovered the mutilated beheaded from inside a sack in the ditch. They also arrested Shohag, 20, of Rafargaon village in Hajiganj upazila suspecting his involvement with the murder. A case was filed, reports UNB.
