Family appeals for Kamran's bail tomorrow



UNB, Sylhet



The family members of detained Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran met with him at Comilla jail yesterday.

Kamran's family and lawyers told UNB that they would appeal to the court Sunday for his bail.

Kamran contested the Aug4 polls from detention and won the mayoral post.

His party Awami League has renewed demand for his release from jail.

Kamran faces three cases on charges of corruption but he earlier pleaded innocent.

He was rearrested on May 28, 2007 after he was released from jail on bail.

Journalist Anwar Zahid critically ill



UNB, Dhaka



Veteran journalist Anwar Zahid is on life support in city's United Hospital.

Family sources said condition of Zahid improved slightly yesterday. Doctors have advised a set of medical tests for him.

He has been suffering from acute kidney problems along with other diseases and was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday.

Mother strangulated to death by son in Comilla



UNB, Comilla



A drug addict son strangulated his mother to death following an altercation at village Baradoil in Adarsha Sadar upazila on Wednesday night.

Local people said Abdur Rahman's drug addict son Suman, 25, while trying to sell a spade of their house to buy drugs his mother Jinnater Nesa, 50, resisted him. At this he became furious and strangled his mother at dead of night.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. Local people later handed over the killer son to police. A case was filed.
