Sultan Smrity Sangrahashala remaining closed for 4 years

Narail Correspondent

Sultan Smrity Sangrhashala to store the memories of Artist SM Sultan is now under lock and key for want of manpower. This complex has been built on 2.54 acres of land on Masimdia village, outskirts of Narail town and the total expenditure of the project was about two crore. The complex was inaugurated in June 2004. Ten different officials including one curator and two assistant curator were employed to conduct the daily activities of 'Sangrahashala'. But they are not being paid since October 2003. Consequently they all left their work. So, local people and tourists hailing from different places of home and abroad are being deprived of enjoying 'Sultans' outstanding works which are kept there for demonstration.

While communicated with the NDC of Narail, he said, as there are many invaluable assets including forty-one paintings of the great artist, his personal belongings, rare collection of books in the memorial, it is closed considering its safety. The project has not been transferred to revenue sector for lack of proper permission of the ECNEC, he added. Coming 10 August, the 85th birth anniversary will be celebrated with much festivity and enthusiasm. Many high officials and representative of the government will deliver lectures including different commitment but will the memorial be opened for general people? Local people want to know on the eve of the birth anniversary of the great artist SM Sultan.

Last year adviser for cultural affairs Rasheda k Chowdhury, while addressing in a discussion meeting held on ' Sultan Munch' promised made a commitment to solve the problem immediately but it has not been implemented.
