1,38,100 hectares of land brought under T-Aman cultivation in Netrakona

Farmers of Netrakona district has started taking preparations for planting Aman saplings on their farm lands. Sources said, many farmers have stasrted rendering field-level service round the clock for making their agricultural lands suitable for Aman cultivation. They have already rose Aman-saplings on their seeds beds.

District Agricultural Extension Department (DAED) office sources said, A massive T-Aman cultivation programme has been designed in Netrakona district during the curret Aman season.

Under the programme, a total of 1,38,100 hectares of lands would be brought under the T-Aman paddy cultivation in the upazilas of the district.

Of the total lands, 85,160 hectares of lands would be brought under high yielding variety (HYV) of the paddy and 52,940 hectares of lands would be brought under the local variety of the paddy, the sources said. The experts of the DAED have fixed a target for producing more than three lakhs metric tons Aman paddy in the district, the sources added.

Mass awareness on breastfeeding to build healthy society stressed

World Breastfeeding Day has began in the district on August 1 aimed of creating mass awareness among the people about the need of breastfeeding to build a healthy and intelligent society. As a part of the observance of the week, Gaibandha Pourashava health committee organised a discussion meeting and mother's gathering on the premises David Company para government primary school of the town here on August 2.

Gaibandha Poura Chairman Anwar-Ul-Hasan Sabur addressed the meeting as chief guest. Presided over by poura councillor Sajeda Parvin Runu, the meeting was also addressed among others by panel Chairman or Abdul Hai, Social worker Saiful Alam Saka, Field trainer of concern Nasima Hossain and Shawkat Hossain.

Later, 10 mothers and 5 volunteers were give prizes in the function. A large number of mothers, local elite public representatives and the journalists were present on the occasion.

3 including UP chairman get life-term for murder

Three persons including a UP chairman were sentenced to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) and four others were acquitted of the charges in the sensational Belal murder case here on Tuesday.

District and sessions Judge of Rangpur M Hassan Imam delivered the verdict in a jam-packed Rangpur courtroom after hearing of the case.

Prosecution in brief, is that the accused persons brutally murdered Belal Ahmmed, son of Tayebur Rahman of village Dhoniram in Pirgacha upazila in 1997 in a planned manner following long- term enmity.

The victim's father filed a murder case in this connection against seven persons with Pirgacha police station and police submitted chargesheet to the learned court against all of the accused persons after investigation. After examining the evidences and eleven witnesses, the learned court found three accused persons guilty and handed down the verdict against them.

Those, who got life terms RI, are: Chairman of Parul UP in Pirgacha upazila AKM Anisur Rahman Quasem, Abdus Sattar and absconding Abu Mian of the same area.

The acquitted persons are: Moslem Uddin, Majibar Rahman, Nasser Ali and Asmat Ali. Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Maidul Islam appeared for the state while senior Advocate Moazzem Hossain defended the accused side.

Tk 52,650 stipend distributed among 19 disabled students in Gaibandha

Urban Social Service office distributed the money among the disabled students of primary and high schools of the town under Education Stipend Programme of Social Service Department on Tuesday.

The aim of the programme is to encourage the disabled students to receive education like other normal students and to help them continue their studies to make them worthy citizens of the society.

A function was held at the conference room of district collectorate building with ADC (General) M Abul Bayes Miah in the chair while deputy commissioner Abu Muhammad Yousuf distributed the cheque of stipend among the disabled students as the chief guest.

Urban social service officer M Mizanur Rahman, members of stipend implementation committee, heads of the institutions and the local elite including the journalists were present on the occasion.

A total of Taka 52,650 were distributed among the 19 disabled students of primary and high schools in the function. Each of the primary and high school students received Taka 2700 and Taka 4050 respectively.

Meeting on community policing held at Pirgacha

A views-exchange meeting organised with a view to curbing social crimes through community policing was held on the Pirgacha thana premises on Saturday. Chaired by Officer-in-Charge of Pirgacha Police Station Jatindranath Sharma, the meeting was attended by Additional Police super of Rangpur Paritosh Ghosh as the chief guest while ASP Shahjahan from Rangpur RAN camp was present as special guest.

President of Pirgacha upazila unit of community policing committee Khondker Abul Hasnat, Fakhrul Alam, headmasters Khondker Motiar Rahman and Sofer Uddin, businessmen community leader Abdullah Al Mahmud, Khorshed Alam, addressed, among others. All members of the upazila community policing committee, UP chairmen and members, local elite and members of the civil society were present.

The speakers narrated the essence of community policing involving all people to eradicate social crimes and curses like dowry, child marriage, drug addiction, drug trafficking and smuggling, gambling through reviving the lost social values.

2 held with phensidyl in Comilla

Police seized 400 bottles of phensidyl from a CNG-run autorickshaw and a rickshaw and held two persons from Chowdhagram and Sadar South thana areas on Saturday.

The arrested were Abdul Gani, 34, and Aman, 35, police said. Being tipped off, police seized 300 bottles of phensidyl beside of LSS CNG station on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway under Chowdhagram thana of the district on Saturday. Police held its driver Abdul Gani along with the vehicle.

In another drive, police also recovered 100 bottles of phensidyl carrying in a rickshaw from Bhagalpur area under Sadar South than on the same day and held it rickshaw-puller Aman. Two separate cases were filed with concerned police stations in these connections.

4 persons nabbed in Rajshahi

Police, in different anticrime drives, rounded up 34 persons on various charges from different areas of the city and nine upazilas of the district on Sunday. Of them eight were arrested from different areas of the metropolis while 26 others from nine upazilas.

Traffic police lodged eight cases under the motor vehicles ordinance during drives against the non-registered motor vehicles and other document related malpractices in different parts of the city during the time.

Blood donation camp held in Gangachara

A blood donation camp organised by the Department of Transfusion Medicine of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) was held at Boraibari Government Primary School premises in Gangachara upazila on Saturday.

A discussion ceremony was organised on 'Safe Blood Transfusion' on the occasion where the specialist physicians narrated various points for ensuring safe blood transfusion and safe blood.

Professor Dr AKM Shamsuddin of the Department of Transfusion Medicine of RMCH answered questions on safe blood in the ceremony that was attended by UNO of Gangachara upazila Abu Nasar Mohammad Abdullah as the chief guest.

Dr M Omar Faruk, Dr M Shahjahan and Dr M Anisul Karim discussed elaborately on safe blood transfusion on the occasion. Later, a total 19 persons donated 19 bags of blood.

Farmers’ meet held in Baraigram

A meeting of farmers was held at the village of Malipara under Baraigram upazila in Natore district under the auspices of BRAC, Bonpara on July 31.

This meeting was presided over by BRAC, Area Manager Md Shajahan Siraj. The chief guest was BRAC, Regional Manager Sanjita Sarker. Representative meet of Jubo Dal held in Mymensingh

Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal, Dhaka Division representative meeting was held at Taj Bengal Community Centre on 28th July in Mymensingh.

Albert P. Costa, Vice President Central Jubodal Presided over the meeting. The meeting was conducted by Shah Shibbir Ahmed Bulu, District president of Jubo Dal. Miah Mohammad Selim, in charge President Jubo Dal (Central) was present as chief guest. Central in charge Secretary Advocate Abbus Salam Azad was present as chief speaker. Khairul Kabir Khokon, Central Organising secretary, Fazlur Rahman, Mir Nawaj Ali were also Present. The speakers urged unconditional release of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, realease of Tareque Rahman and sending him abroad far better treatment. They also urged release of National leader Mirja Abbas, Advocate Sayed Mazzame, Hossain Alal. They also stressed on immediate withdrawal of State Emergency and holding of National Election. Some 200 Dhaka Divisional representative were present in the meeting.

Foundation stone of Madaripur Agriculture Diploma College laid

Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Education Mozzamel Haque Khan laid the foundation stone of Agriculture Diploma College of Rajoir upazila of the district on July 19.

180 students of Madaripur and its adjoining district i.e. Gopalganj Shariatpur, Faridpur and Barisal will get chance to get admitted to the Agriculture Diploma College. The college will have 180 seats for the time being for future it may be extended.

The foundation laying ceremony was charied by Suresh Chandra Roy Deputy Secretary of the same ministry, Shosi Kumar Singho the Deputy commissioner (DC) of Madaripur, former MP Shahjahan Khan, former embassador Sarwar Hossain Molla, Dr. Anwar Haque Sharif Professor Jahangir Nagar University, UNO of Rajoir Upazila Mashiur Rahman spoke on the occasion.

Two transformer lifters held in Aditmari

Two electric transformer lifters were arrested red- handed from Velabari area in Aditmari upazila of Lalmonirhat district in the small hours on Tuesday. Conducting a sudden raid, police caught red-handed Jahir Mian, of Sindurmoti village in Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat and Afsar Ali, of village Jamalhat in Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha while they were engaged in stealing an electric transformer there.

A case was filed in this connection with Aditmari police station and the arrested persons were sent to jail hajat after producing before a Lalmonirhat court, the sources said.
