Mass awareness to prevent HIV/AIDS underscored

The HIV and STD Alliance Bangladesh (HASAB) in association with German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) organized a seminar on HIV/AIDS at Political Science Department of Rajshahi University (RU) on Saturday.

12 divisional moderators and trainer of the Jic -OIKKO (Join in circuit -United preventing AIDS) spoke five relevant topics on AIDS. The department chairman Prof. Dr. Aminur Rahman was the chief guest on the seminar while present student Adviser Prof. Faridul Islam as special guest.

The speakers stressed the need for raising mass awareness of the deadly disease to prevent it's spread in the country.

After the seminar partici-pants received their gifts from the chief guest and special guest. 225 students of the department along with 10 teachers participated on the seminar. Training officer and coordinator of the program M. Hafijul Islam said that, they have attached 2500 students of Rajshahi city oriented institutions preventing AIDS.

Bokahri , Rashed ,Mita participators of the program said that ,they have learned detail on AIDS which will help them preventing AIDS .They also urged to expand the program on every institution of Rajshahi because of its risky situation on AIDS.

Floodwaters start receding in Rajbari

Floodwater started receding from different low-lying areas in Goalondo and Rajbari sadar upazila of the district.

District Water Development Board (WDB) sources said the water level in the river Padma was flowing 32 cm above danger level at Goalondo point on Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, river erosion is going on at different points in an unabated manner.

The worst affected areas are Uttar Daulatdia, Debogram, Ujanchar and Daulatdia. A total of 35 families have been rendered homeless while a vast tract of plain land have been eroded, official sources said.

A total of 100 acres of cropland eroded by the wave of the river Padma during last few days, it said.

On the other hand, Char Silimpur, Char Sonakandor, Char Dunchi, Brachar Beninagar and Ramchandrapur are continuously eroding.

Two government primary schools-Mohadebpur and Char Jowkura Government Primary School-are under threat.

The erosion-hit families have taken shelter on embankment and near the railway track areas in Rajbari Sadar and Goalond upazila.

District flood control and relief and rehabilitation office sources said, foods are being distributed among erosion hit families.

RU JCD cadre beaten over toll collection

The residential students of Mother Bux Hall of Rajshahi University (RU) severely beat up a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) cadre of RU unit on Friday midnight as he allegedly collected extortion from general students.

Campus sources said RU JCD unit activist Rajib, a residential student of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall went to the Mother Bux hall room no 148 and hunting a student named Sarwar on Friday. Sources said, Sarwar one of the residential student of the room No 148.

As he failed to find Sarwar then Rajib demanded toll to Karim and Bariqul two roommates of Sarwar Tk 500. On the time, a tussle was held between Rajib and Karim.

At a one stage, JCD cadre Rajib stabbed Karim with sharp weapon and tried to leave the place. On the time Barikul raised an alarm shouting 'dacoits, dacoits', the residential students rushed to the spot, caught Rajib and beat him mercilessly. Rajib jumped from second floor of the hall to save himself but agitating student caught him again.

On information, police and hall provost went to the spot and rescued JCD activist Rajib in critical condition. Police recovered two sharp weapons searching Rajib's body.

Police also arrested three students including Sarwar, Barikul and Karim for interrogation on the same night. Sources said, Rajib is now undergoing treatment at the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) under police custody.

When contacted Motiher Police Station, duty officer SI Aktar told the correspondent that three were arrested for interrogation.

When contacted RU proctor Enamul Haque, said we take the incident seriously and take initiative for prevent such kind of incident.

72 persons nabbed on various charges in Rajshahi, Rangpur

Police, in different anticrime drives, rounded up 50 people on various charges from different areas in city and nine upazilas of the district in last 24 hours ending last evening.

Of them, 15 were nabbed from different areas in the metropolis while 35 others from nine upazilas.

Traffic police lodged eight cases under the motor vehicles ordinance during the drives against the non-registered motor vehicles and other document related malpractices in different parts of the city at that time.

BSS from Rangpur adds: Police arrested a total of 22 persons including suspected criminals on different charges from various places in the district during the past 24 hours till 12 noon on Sunday.

Police said the arrested persons included terrorists, drug traffickers, peddlers, drug addicts, gamblers and absconding accused from different places of the district. Police also recovered huge quantities of narcotics substances including ganja, phensidyl, locally produced wine, stolen goods and other illegal things during the drives.

Kotwali police arrested 16 persons, Gangachara two, Mithapukur three and Pirgacha police arrested one person during the period.

The arrested persons were sent to jail hajat when police produced them before different Rangpur courts today, police said.

Mass dacoity committed in Agailjhara upazila

Daring dacoities were committed in six houses in Agailjhara upazila on Friday night and looted cash money, gold ornaments, valuables and mobile phone sets worth over Taka 10 lakh, police said.

Local people caught dacoit leader Ali Hossain, 30, and his associate Belayet Hossain, 28, from Valukshi village under Agailjhara upazila and handed over them to police.

At least 15 people were injured in these dacoities. Relevant sources said, a gang of armed dacoits numbering 18/20 entered into Hawlader Bari in Valukshi village under Agailjhara upazila of the district at 12 midnight on Friday and committed dacoities in the houses of businessman Zakir Hawlader, former headmaster Saidur Rahman and Jubadal leader Jamil Hawlader.

The dacoits beat Jamil, 35, Abtabun Nessa, 98 and Najira Begum, 30 mercilessly. Later, the dacoits entered into the houses of Kazi Mosarrof, Kazi Abdul Majid and Motin Hawlder of the same village one after anthor by breaking open the doors. Mostafijur Rahman, 25, Kazi Monirul Islam, 30, Jaida Begum, 23, Rehana Begum, 30, Poly, 12, and Delwara Begum, 40, were injured by the dacoits.

Hearing hue and cry local people gheraoed the areas and the dacoits hurled three crude bombs on them injuring six persons including Siddiqur Rahman,50 and Alauddin,28, the sources added. They were admitted to Agailjhara health complexes. The dacoits looted cash money 38,000/, 32 vories of gold ornaments, five mobile phone sets and valuables worth about Taka 10 lakh from the houses.

Jamil Hawlader filed a case against 18 dacoits with Agailjhara Thana police Saturday.

Students ransack dining room at Barisal Women’s College protesting hike of meal charges

Agitated students of Barisal Govt Women's College hostel staged demonstration and ransacked its dining room early Friday protesting 30 percent increase of daily meal charges.

Female students of Rowshanjahan Hostel alleged that hostel superintendent Bashirul Huq on Thursday evening served a notice fixing daily meal charges of Tk 40 per head from Tk 30 with effectfrom Saturday.

When the hostel authorities forced the students to receive the monthly meal-cards with increased rates on Thursday night, they started agitation protesting the decision. At one stage the authorities locked the main gate of the hostel at about 10pm. Later, the agitated students broke open the lock at about 12:30am and assembled in front of the main gate of the college.

They chanted various slogans demanding removal of the hostel super and withdrawal of the new meal charges.

Prof Ramijuddin, principal of the college, rushed in and brought the situation under control with the help of other teachers late at night.

Khaleda Parvin, assistant super of the hostel, said following price hike of essentials, the authorities decided to increase daily meal charges.

ECAVET inaugurated at BAU

The inaugural ceremony of the Extracurricular Activities in Veterinary Science (ECAVET), Faculty of Veterinary Science of the Bangladesh Agricultural university (BAU) was held at the Microbiology gallery on July 30.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtar Hossain was the chief guest while Professor Dr Md. Motahar Hussain Mondal, Head, Department of Parasitology was present as special guest at the inaugural function. ECAVET President Professor Dr Mahbub Mostofa chaired the inaugural session. Dr Md Kamrul Islam, Secretary, ECAVET discussed the aims and objectives of the Extracurricular activities in Veterinary Science under the Faculty of veterinary Science of the University.

One held with daggers in Rupganj

People of Brahmankhali village under Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj caught a robber when he and his associates were taking preparation for committing robbery on the 2nd July at night.

Sensing the presence of the people 7 others fled away from the scene. People recovered 4 big knives and 2 grill cutters from the spot left by the robbers. The caught robber was identified as Delwar Hossain, son of Abdur Rahshid Mullah hailing from Chogaria village of Narsingdi district. People handed over him tot he police and 2 separate cases were filed with the Rupganj thana in connection with the robbery and possessing arms.

One killed by son-in-law in Magura

A man was killed allegedly by his son-in-law at Isakhada village in Sadar upazila on Friday night.

Police said Bachchu Miah, son of Borhan Miah, beat his wife at noon following a family feud. Later, his wife informed the matter to her father Harun Miah, 60.

Angered by the incident of beating, Harun and his son Humayun of neighboring Birpur village beat Bachchu at Isakhada bazar in the evening.

Later, a fierce clash ensued between the two groups and at one stage Bachchu stabbed his father-in-law Harun, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to the Sadar hospital where he died. Police arrested Bachchu Miah. A case was filed.

Dacoity committed to a train

A dacoity was committed in a Dhaka bound mail train from Bahadurabad ghat station at place between Jamalpur and Nandina rail station early on Saturday morning.

Government railway police sources said, a group of armed gang shortly after leaving the Jamalpur railway station attacked the passengers at 5 am.

They looted valuables of passengers of number-8 down mail train. They also forcibly fell down on duty Ansar Helal Uddin, 35 and a hawker Jahangir Alam, 30, from the running train at outer signal of Nandina station.

Local people caught docoit Selim while he was getting down from the train near Nandina station.

The alleged dacoit hailed from Vaitapara village in Nakhla upazila under Sherpur district. Injured Helal Uddin and Jahangir Alam were admitted into Jamalpur General Hospital in a critical condition.

A case was registered with Jamalpur GRP.

10 mts of looted iron rods recovered in Sherpur

Police recovered 10 mts of looted iron rods from a godown in Sheripara area of the district town and also arrested a businessman in this connection on Thursday.

SI of Sadar thana Mizanur Rahman said a truck loaded with 16 mts of rods was snatched by miscreants from Sitakundu upazila of Chittagong district on Monday.

Sitakundu thana police arrested two people for their alleged involvement with the snatching. As per their confessional statements, investigation officer of Sitakundu thana Kauser Islam along with the Sherpur thana police conducted a drive in the town on Thursday and arrested businessman Khandakar M Aslam, 35, from his in-law's house in Chakpathak area of the town.

Police, on the basis of information given by Aslam, raided the godown of contractor Syed Arifur Rahman and seized the looted rods.

6 gamblers held in Rangpur

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested six professional gamblers and seized cash money and playing cards from Munshipara area in the city on Friday.

Police sources said acting on a tip off, a special squad of DB police raided a house there and arrested the gamblers red- handed while they were gambling and seized Taka 1,384 cash, two sets of playing cards and candles.

One crushed by train in Kishoreganj



KISHOREGANJ, Aug 5: A sexagenarian man was crushed under the wheels of a train on Kishoreganj-Mymensingh route at Kalapara in Sadar upazila Saturday morning. Witnesses said Kutu Miah, 60, in an unguarded moment went under Mymensingh-bound local train from Bhairab at about 8am and died on the spot. He hailed from Sholakia village in the upazila. Railway police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.



Two arrested with fake currency notes in Comilla



COMILLA, Aug 5: Rapid Action Battalion members arrested two people along with fake currency notes from Daulatganj Bazar in Laksam upazila on Friday. Sources said a special team of RAB-11 arrested Jahangir Alam Zahir, 28, and Shah Alam, 48, along with 11 notes of Tk 500 denomination. Later, they were handed over to the Laksam thana police. Zohir and Shah Alam were involved in fake currency notes trading since long, police said, reports UNB.



One killed in Jhalakati road mishap



JHALAKATI, Aug 5: A man was killed and five others were injured when a bus dashed a roadside tree at Burihat in Nalchhiti upazila on Friday morning. Police said the Dhaka-bound bus of 'Media Paribahan' ploughed through five shops on Barisal-Patuakhali highway after hitting a tree at about 11.30 am leaving six of its passengers injured. The injured were admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital where Nesaruddin Akond, 40, died later, reports UNB.



Three drown in Gopalganj



GOPALGANJ, Aug 5: Three people, including two minor boys, drowned in ponds at three villages in Tungipara upazila on Wednesday. The dead were identified as Mohibullah, 8, son of Nur Mohammad of Barnigram village, Walid, 10, son of Dulal Biswas of Gimadanga village and Mina Khanom, 20, daughter of South Kusholi village. Of them, Mina Khanom was mentally deranged, reports UNB.



Body recovered in Sylhet



SYLHET, Aug 5: Slaug-htered body of an uniden-tified young man was recovered from Karmodha village in Fenchuganj upazila on Thursday night. Local people found the body tied with a tree near 'Akhata Pujamandap' at about 8pm and informed the police. Police later recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy. The reason behind the murder could not be known immediately, reports UNB.



Heroin seizedin Khagrachhari



Khagrachhari, Aug 5: BDR jawans seized heroin worth over Tk 50 lakh and arrested three drug peddlers from Chowdhurypara in Ramgarh upazila Sunday. Tipped off, BDR members went to the area in the guise of buyers. When drug peddlers Kajrai Marma,35 and Mombha Marma,34 started bargaining with the BDR men they caught them red handed. According to their statement, BDR memebrs arrested another drug trader Thoai Marma,50 from his residence at Masterpara in the upazila. The arrested people were handed over to Ramgarh thana police. A case was filed, report UNB.



Dacoits snatch arms from cop in Mymensingh



Mymensingh, Aug 5: Dacoits snatched away a shot gun from a police constable after stabbing him on Goforgaon-Hossainpur road in Goforgaon upazila Monday night. Police said the dacoits shined torchlight on a team of four policemen while patrolling near Hossainpur bridge area at about 10pm. As constable Niranjan Mondol,25, went to see the matter, the robbers attacked him. They stabbed him mercilessly, snatched away his shot gun with nine bullets and left the place hurriedly, report UNB.
