Erosion damages Bhola town protection dam, 16 villages inundated

Some 16 villages were inundated as river erosion damaged the old town protection dam on four points.

While visiting Kachia and Dhania on Wednesday, the UNB correspondent found that hundreds of the marooned people had taken shelter on the cross-dam.

Some affected people took shelter upon bamboo-made platforms inside their houses.

Local sources said the villages went under water as erosion by the Meghna river damaged the dam in Ilisha Murad Shafiullah and Kachia Guramira hat areas.

They alleged that the dam was damaged due to poor quality of construction carried out by the Water Development Board.

Besides, erosion has also devoured some 1000 acres of land in six villages of Sadar upazila in last one week.

Two outlaws killed in shootout with RAB in Naogaon

Two outlaws were killed in a shootout between RAB and their cohorts at Mirzapur village in Atrai upazila here early Friday.

The dead were identified as regional commander of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (ML-Lal Potaka) Saiful Islam, 42, and his accomplice Naser Ali alias Tara (55). RAB sources said Saiful was wanted in five cases, including of police killing and arms loot case at Tahirpur in Bagmara uapzila of Rajshahi and three other murder cases adding that Naser was also wanted in five murder cases.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB raided the village when some outlaws were holding a clandestine meeting.

Sensing the presence of RAB, the extremists opened fire on them forcing the law enforcers to fire back that triggered the gun battle. "At one stage the extremists fled the scene leaving behind the bullet-ridden bodies of Saiful and Naser," said a RAB account of the incident.

When they were taken to the uapzila health complex the attending doctors declared them dead. Two pistols, one shutter gun, 12 rounds of bullet and some sharp weapons were recovered from the scene.

4 killed, 20 hurt in B’baria road mishap

Four people, including a college teacher, were killed and 20 others injured as a bus rammed into a three-wheeler tempo at Ashuganj rail gate Thursday noon.

Police quoting witnesses said the Dhaka-bound bus hit a Biswa road-bound tempo from Ashuganj at about 12 noon killing four passengers on the spot and injuring 20 others.

Three of the dead were identified as Assistant Profes-sor Abul Basir, 44, of Shayestaganj College in Habiganj, Ful Miah, 50, and Liton, 28, while another deceased could not be identified immediately. They were the passengers of the tempo.

Of the injured, six were sent to Dhaka in critical condition while others received treatment from different local hospitals in Ashuganj and Sadar.

Deputy Commissioner M Abdul Hai and Police Super M Ataul Kibria visited the spot.

Shotgun snatched from police, recovered in Mymensingh



UNB, Kishoreganj

The shotgun, snatched away from a police constable at Gafargaon upazila in Mymensingh district on Monday, was recovered from Mirzar char area of the upazila on Thursday.

Dacoits took away the shotgun with nine bullets from the constable after stabbing him on Gafargaon-Hossainpur road in the upazila on Monday night.

The injured constable Niranjan is undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Four bullets were recovered and five people arrested on Tuesday in an operation carried out by a team comprising police from Kishoreganj and Mymensingh districts and RAB-9 troops.

The joint force recovered the shotgun in abandoned condition from Mirzar char at 3am today.

Four police constables were suspended for negligence of duty.

Kishoreganj Police Super Md Mizanur Rahman said joint operation to nab the terrorists will continue.

Goats distributed among distressed in Mymensingh

A free goat distribution meeting to eliminate poverty was held at Utch-akhila Bazar under Ishwarganj Upazila of the district on 22nd July.

Mustakim Billah Faruquee, UNO Ishwarganj Islam, DD Social Welfare, Mymensingh was present as special guest.

Huge illegal timber seized in Ctg

Chittagong North Forest Division (CNFD) seized huge quantity different category illegal timbers including teak timber worth about Taka 15 lakh after conducting separate drives in Keranihat area under Satkania upazila in the district on Thursday night.

Sources said the CNFD personnel with the help of Bangladesh Rifles conducted the day-long drives beginning at 9 a.m. yesterday.

Timber smugglers hide the timber at ponds, roadside ditches and secret warehouses after collecting those from government reserved forest.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of CNFD Mohammed Shafiul Alam Chowdhury told BSS that they brought the seized timber at Padua Forest Range Office for measuring the actual quantity of the seized goods.

Housewife killed by husband in C’nawabganj



UNB, Chapainawabgan

A housewife was beaten to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Mollan village in Sadar upazila early Wednesday.

Police said Tariqul Islam beat his wife Samira Begum, 25, mother of three children, to death following a quarrel over dowry at about 3am.

Family sources said Tariqul used to torture his wife for dowry since their marriage nine years ago. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue for autopsy. Tariqul and his family members fled the scene soon after the killing.

Another report from Jalampur adds: Momena Yasmin, Hasna, 40, wife of retired army official Sajjadul Karim, was hacked to death by unidentified assailants at Chhoto Gaziapara village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday midnight.

The incident took place when Momena was sleeping with her daughter.

The assailants swooped on her while her husband was working in his poultry farm near his house.

The reason behind the murder could not be known immediately. A case was filed.

Police super Khandakar Faruq Ahmed and Sadar thana OC Firoz Khan visited the spot.

Top terror Mamun arrested in Lalmonirhat

Police arrested listed top terror Zohurul Haque Mamun from Moghalhat Gate area in the district town in the small hours of Friday in connection with an extortion case.

Police sources said, local cow trader Rokan Uzzaman Rokan filed an extortion case against 11 persons including Mamun with Lalmonirhat Sadar Thana following obstructing a cow-laden truck and demanding Taka 50,000 toll at Teesta Rail Bridge on June 1. The other accused persons have been absconding since filing of the case.

A number of criminal cases in connection with terrorism, extortion and illegal arms are pending against Mamun, son of Golam Mostafa, of Kalibari area in the town, the sources said.

Free treatment will be provided of the cleft lip and cleft plate-affected unprivileged boys, girls and children by "The Memory Hospital" of Bhulta, Rupganj in Narayanganj from 12th August next and it will continue till 14th August. Society for Rehabilitation of Burn Victims (SRBV). Shahid Bari, Dr. Iqubal Mahmud Chowdhury among others, distinguished doctors will perform all tests and operations including providing medicines, living and feeding free of cost.

Apart from this, consultant Mozaffar Hossain along with other doctors will take responsibility of Anesthesia department.

In this regard Dr. Faruqul Islam, Managing Director of the Memory hospital told the correspondent that a lot of girls, boys and children are suffering from the mentioned diseases in our country.

They are unable to offer necessary treatment due to financial crisis. Specially poor girls keep themselves isolated from the society and think themselves hapless and cursed. Their parents are always panic-stricken as they cannot get their daughters married because of affected disease.

Housewife killed in Jamalpur

A middle-aged housewife was killed by unknown assailant at Chhota Gaziapara village under Sadar Upazila on Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as Momena Yesmin Hasna, 40, wife of retired Army Sergeant Sajjadul Karim. Police said Hasna was sleeping with her daughter in her room keeping the window open. The miscreants entered into her room and killed her with sharp weapon at around 11 PM. Her husband was at his poultry farm adjacent to their house during the incident. Police recovered the body and sent it to Jamalpur General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

One killed by nephew in

Netrakona

A disabled uncle was killed allegedly by his nephew at Narayanpur of Kendua pourashava in the district in a clash between the family members.

Police and locals said, the clash started centering over a land-related dispute. Mukhlesur Rahman, 54, a disabled person of Narayanpur village was killed in the clash as he was hit with a sharp weapon allegedly by his nephew Shafiqul Islam, 23. Three other members of his family were also injured in the clash. Police rushed to the spot and arrested the alleged killer Shafiqul Islam and his father Atiqur Rahman.

Police sent the body to Netrakona Sadar hospital morgue for postmortem.

A murder case was filed with Kendua police station.

PhD degree conferred

Md. Hasan Kabir, Deputy Director, Bangla Academy, Dhaka obtained Ph.D. degree from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Myme-nsingh. The title of his thesis was "Performance of Year Round Mungbean Varieties as Affected by Planting Practice, Phosphorus level, Inoculum and Irrigation". His thesis Supervisor was Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman Sarkar, Professor, Department of Agronomy, BAU, Mymensingh.

He conducted 14 experiments in which five modern varieties of mungbean, ten planting dates, three planting densities, six levels of phosphrous, Bradyrhizkobium inoculum and three levels of irrigation frequencies were treated in three consecutive years.

Three books written by Dr. Hasan Kabir were published by Bangla Academy. The number of his scientific papers published in different international and national journals was five. Besides, he has contributed fiftee popular scientific articles to different national journals.

One arrested with phensidyl in Meherpur

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested one person with Phensidyl from Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.

The arrested was identified as Abul Basar,40. RAB sources said, acting on tip-off, a team of the elite force arrested him with 80 bottles of phensidyl from Dhakkhin Shalika village under sadar upazila.

Workshop on oil crops under action plan in Faridpur

A day-long workshop on oil crops under action plan was held at the auditorium of poet Jashim Uddin here on Wednesday.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) organised the Workshop with DAE Deputy Director Faruque Ahmed in the chair.

Additional Director of DAE Molla Safiar Rahman attended the workshop as the chief guest while Principal of Agriculture Institute of Faridpur Mia Wasiul Islam and Barisal Regional Deputy Director of DAE Haris Molla were present as special guests.

Rabeya Khatun, mother of noted social worker Habibur Rahman Ratan, died of old age complications at the Sadar hospital on Tuesday night. She was 95, family sources said.

She left behind three sons, four daughters and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn her death. The namaz-e-janaza of Rabeya Khatun was held at Netrakona Central Jam-e-Mosque after asr prayers yesterday. She was buried at her family graveyard at Katli.

NARSINGDI, August 03: Police recovered 228 bottles of phensidyl syrup from a shop at Itakhola bus stand market in Shibpur upazila on Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Wednesday. Police said acting on secret information, they recovered the drugs searching a decorators' shop and arrested shop owner Abul Miah, 30 and Majibar, 35. A case was filed against them under Narcotics Control Act, reports UNB.

Day labourer killed falling from tower in Sylhet

SYLHET, August 03: A day labourer was killed falling from a GrameenPhone tower in Golapganj upazial Tuesday morning. Local people said Ibrahim Miah, 23, fell on to the ground from the under-construction tower while working on it at about 10am. Ibrahim hailed from Pangkhai village in Sadar upazila died on the way to Osmani Medical College Hospital. A UD case was filed, reports UNB.

4 held with arms in Satkhira

SATKHIRA, August 03: Police arrested four people, including a fugitive convict, along with three firearms and ammunition from Kashibati in Kaliganj upazila on Wednesday. The arrested were identified as Ashraf Mir, 50, Mojibor Sana, 80, Aminul Islam, 38, and Sadekul Islam, 35. Of them, Ashraf Mir was sentenced to life term imprisonment in a case. Acting on a tip off, police raided the house of Ashraf in Kashibati in the afternoon and recovered one rifle, one revolver and one shutter gun, four cartridges and one bullet and arrested them. Seven robbers arrested in Habiganj

HABIGANJ, August 03: Seven suspected robbers were arrested from Laskarpur rail gate in Shayestaganj thana on Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Tuesday night. The arrested are M Motaleb, 38, Aktar Mia, 34, Abdul Quddus, 28, Humayun Mia, 40, Ataur Rahman, 28, Jewel Ahmed, 25, and Tapan Kumar Roy, 35. Father, daughter killed in Narsingdi road mishap

NARSINGDI, August 03: A man and his minor daughter were crushed under the wheels of a bus at Sahebprotap in Sadar upazila on Dhaka-Narsingdi road early Thursday. The dead were identified as Amir Hossain, 35, and his daughter Amena Akther, 4. Witnesses said the Dhaka bound bus from Narsingdi town knocked down the man and his daughter while overtaking another bus, killing both of them on the spot at about 5.30am. Police recovered the bodies of the victims and sent those to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed, reports UNB.

20 shops gutted in Noakhali

NOAKHALI, August 03: Fire gutted 20 shops at Shamsul Haq Miahr bazar in Subornochar upaizla here Wednesday. Local traders said the fire originated from a tea stall early in the morning in the market and soon engulfed the adjoining grocery, tailoring, pharmacy and bakery shops. Fire fighters on information rushed to the spot from Maizdee town and brought the blaze under control with the help of local people.
