BEPZA'S Rejoinder

Through a protest letter dated 28-07-08 the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) said that an editorial published in the July 25, 2008 issue of the New Nation tilted 'Returns from EPZs' did not seem to be based on facts.

Expressing disagreement with the position of the editorial, which read that 'Earning from Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in the country cannot keep pace with the increased volume of investment although foreign investment in the EPZs has reportedly doubled in fiscal 2007-08', BEPZA informed that by the end of the fiscal year 2007-08 it had fulfilled the export target set for the same period.

BEPZA also informed that the factories that were installed in the last fiscal year would start export performances from the current fiscal.

BEPZA mentioned that there were eight EPZs in the country at present, not nine as was mentioned in the Editorial.

Our note : The rejoinder of BEPZA itself says that the industries set last year are yet to start export. Our purpose is to see the EPZs 'more efficient and rewarding'.

The BEPZA web page shows both eight and nine EPZs. Plus, its map shows ten EPZs in all.

Good work DCC

Finally the City Corporation is pleased to remove the historical environment polluting garbage container stationed at the entry point of College gate on Mirpur road about which SAU reporters of different newspapers wrote a lot!

Well, in getting the City Corporation realised the serious problems the garbage container was creating, our Proctor Prof. Dr. Ruhul Amin did a hard motivational job!

Although it took several years for the City Corporation to take the removal decision, we would still congratulate the concerned officials with a brief note of request - "Please be speedy in attending public grievances".
