Duck farming makes poor farmer self-reliant in Kurigram

Once upon a time a very poor man Azgor Ali has now become self reliant by rearing ducks in his local pond in Rajarhat upozila of Kurigram district. Three years ago Azgor Ali of the village Amtoli, under Rajarhat upozila of the district set up a duck farm with two hundred ducks. There are now two thousand and five hundred ducks in his farm at present.
He gets one thousand eggs daily and earns minimum Tk. 4000/- every day by selling them. He earns a very high amount of Taka ninety thousand per month after meeting his all demands. He told the Correspondent that the did not spend any money to feed his ducks. He at first keeps the duck (200 ducks) in the nearby canals and they live on mainly water hyacinths, water borne leaves and small fishes. He advises the unemployed youths to run duck farm for becoming self reliant. He is not well trained in this profession. Azgor wants to set up poultry and dairy farms in future. He has already become a successful figure for thus duck farm. Many people come to see his duck farm every day. The villagers of his village are following his policies of making duck farms in the locality. He said that he would be happy to offer all possible help to the people interested in running duck farm.
Chuadanga poura poll: Election campaign gains momentum

Election in nine pourashavas of the country will be held on 4 August. Extenstive canvassing among competitors is going on in poura area of Chuadanga. Candidates are passing over sleepless night to expedite their election campaign. They are seeking vote from door to door. Discussion relating to election is going on in hotels, restaurants and shops.
Five candidates are competing for the post of chairman. They are Khondaker Abdul Gabbar Sona (BNP), Reazul Islam Gourder Toton (Awami League), Ekramul Haque Mukto, Anowar Hossain Correspondent (independent) and Syed Faruqueuddin are competing for the post of poura chairman.
It may be mentioned that Ashraf Ali, Advocate, a veteran Awami League leader won in the last poura election of Chuadanga. He is not competing in this term. At this, strong competition may be witnessed among the junior competitors. A few voters assume that position of Abdul Gabbar Sona (BNP) is better as two candidates practically face real competition between Khondaker Abdul Gabbar Sona and Reazul Islam Tobon. All candidates are trying to become trustworthy among the voters by dint of alluring assurance of development of Chuadanga poura area.
On the other hand, nine candidates for the post of three reserved women councillors and fifty-five candidates for the post of nine ward councillors are competing.
The election will be held here free and fair, locals said.
Call to be united to resist anti-liberation forces

Speakers at a Citizens Dialogue called upon all progressive non-communal and pro-Liberation War forces to get united to resist anti-Liberation War and communal forces in the next election.
Economist Ajoy Roy said, we will implement the dreams of the freedom fighters and build a country where there will be no repression and discr-imination.
The citizens dialogue titled National Unity to meet the national challenge was organised by Combined Social Movement at Kishoreganj District Bar Association hall room on Saturday.
Combined Social Movement Kishoreganj district unit president Advocate Ashok Sankar presided overr the dialogue and it was addressed among others, by Mili Rahman, Syed Abul Muksud, Advocate Dolon Bhowmik, Professor M A Gani, journalist Mostafa Kamal, and women's leader Sultana Khaled.
Mili Rahman said Jamaat-e-Islami wants to capture power by using Islam.
She called upon all democratic and progressive forces to get united and to resist the anti-liberation forces.
Students of BKSP Public School halt traffic movement in Savar

Students of BKSP Public School and College Monday halted traffic movement on Nabinagar-EPZ road for three hours by putting barricade, protesting Sunday's road accident that left one student seriously injured.
About 700 students took position on the road near their institution at about 9am. They damaged doors and windows of the institution and 10 different vehicles during their protest.
The agitating students also chanted slogans to press home their three-point demands. The demands include construction of over-bridge and speed breaker in front of the school and expanding road near the school. Two students, Shuvo and Shaheen, were injured during the rampaging of their school.
The students, however, withdrew their barricade at noon with the intervention of the Principal Lt. Colonel Anwar Hossain of the educational institution, police officials of Ashulia and Joydevpur thanas, army members of local camp and guardians.
Many vehicles remained stranded during the barricade.
Swapan, a student of Class IX of the school, was injured as a maxi hit him while he was crossing the road Sunday. The fellow students the same day blocked the road for sometime protesting the accident.
Life sentenced prisoner dies in Barisal

A life-sentenced prisoner of Jhalakati district jail died of old age complications at Barisal SBMCH on Monday early morning. Hospital and police sources said that Md. Ali Hossain, 73, a convicted prisoner for life term, was rushed to Barisal SBMCH on Sunday from Jhalakati district jail after he became sick.
He died at SBMCH on Monday early morning due his old age complications and his dead body handed over to relatives after lodging a case of unnatural death with Barisal Kotwali police station on Monday afternoon. Ali Hossain was serving life term rigorous imprisonment along with other six convicts since 1995 for murdering School Teacher Malek Master of Nalchhity under Jhalakati district on November 19, 1990.
Sowing of date and palm seeds begins in Natore

A programme has been undertaken for sowing of date and palm seeds in the district in order to meet the demand of sugar and maintain the ecological balance. A total of 10 lakh date and palm seeds will be sowed in the district under the auspices of the District Administration of which three lakh date seeds has already been sown.
Sources said the length of railway tract in the district is about 37 km, roads under the Zila Parishad is 836 km, roads under Roads and Highways Department is 139 km, roads under LGED is 320 km and roads under Water Development Board is about 155 km.
Of the total length of roads 10 lakh date and palm seeds will be sowed on both sides of 487 km railway tracks and roads in the district in the first phase.
Apart from the different government organisations non-government organ-isations were also involved in the date and palm seeds sowing programme. The organisations included Department of Agriculture Extension, Forest Depar-tment, Barind Multip-urpose Development Authority, Zila Parishad, BRDB, Primary Education Department, LGED, Ansar, NGO Association and UP chairmen Association.
Executive Engineer of LGED Lokman Ali said the LGED has started sowing of 12,000 date and palm seeds on both sides of about 320 km roads under LGED and Upazila Administration in cooperation of other organisations will sow seeds on the sides of another 314 km roads.
President of Natore district UP Chairmen Association Nuruzzaman Kalu said each of the 52 Union Parishads under the district will sow at least 2,000 date and palm seeds. Besides, Dilruba Begum, district primary education Officer said 655 primary schools of the district have been assigned to sow date on the sides of one km each thus cover 655 km roads.
Bangladesh signs deal with Osaka University
Recently under the joint collaborative agreement between MCHTI, MOH&FW Bangladesh and Osaka University Japan, a field research regarding the development and utilisation of MCH Handbook in Bangladesh (2008-09) has been started at Pubail H & F.W.C, Gazipur District, says a press release.
This field research entitled "Empowerment of Women in Islamic Society: through MCH Handbook in Bangladesh" is facilitated by Dr. Shafi U. Bhuiyan Ph.D and Prof. Yasuhide Nakamura Ph.D of International Collaboration Division, Faculty of Human Sciences, Osaka University Japan In Bangladesh, the MCH Handbook field research is supported by Osaka University and Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (JSPS).
Sub-Inspector closed in Narail

Shahab Uddin, a Sub-Inspector of Police working at Narail town police camp has been closed to Narail police lines on Sunday for his allegedly misbehaviour with two college teachers. According to an eye-witness, this S.I while riding on a speedy motorcycle dashed Haider Ali Dewan, Assistant Professor who has been recently transferred from Narail Victoria College to Jhalakathi Govt. College standing with his former colleague Abdul Halim at the side of the road and fell down. Getting up from the ground, he stepped towards Haider Ali Dewan and suddenly mahandled him. When the students of Government Victoria College heard the news, they got furious and showed demonstration in front of the residence of S.P, Narail on that night.
Assistant Police Super (ASP) and Investigation Officer of the incident Harunar Rashid said, on complaint, the SP of Narail M. Kamrul Ahsan took action against the SI on Sunday. A departmental action will be taken against him, he added.
One killed, 22 hurt in Rupganj bus dacoity

Daring bus dacoity was committed on the 25th July near Hazi Karims house on the Golakaindail-Baliapara Road at Rupganj in Narayanganj. The robbery went on till 3 PM . A gang of robbers attacked buses one after another & looted valuables including mobiles and ornaments from the passengers. During dacoity robbers killed a fruit trader & looted his belongings. The killed was identified as Hossain Ali, 34, son of Shamshu Mia of Baliapara village under Araihazar Upazila. The witnesses said. ''A total of 15/16 dacoits with arms attacked passengers of different buses &snatched all of their belongings." A tempo driver Halim Mia 27, a trader Shahid Mia 25 and Yeasin Mia, 30, of Darikandi village were fatally wounded among other 22 injured by the massive attack of dacoits when they came to help the passengers tried to prevent dacoity.
The wounded were given treatment from the local hospitals of Bhulta.
On information the Assistant Police Super of the Narayanganj district and the O.C, Rupganj Thana, visited the spot. Two separate cases were filed in the Rupganj Thana and the dead body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
Final Voter lists handed over in Gaibandha

Final voter lists for the voters of Fulchari upazila prepared by Bangladesh Army were handed over to the authority of District Election Officer here On July 26.
A simple function organised by district control cell, fresh voters lists with photographs, national identity card issuance project, was held at the conference cenre of Gaibandha Army camp here on Saturday. Major Arif, camp incharge, formally handed over the final voter lists with photographs of Fulchari upazila to District Election Officer Syed Ali Imam as chief guest.
Captain Ashsan Ullah, server officer of the project, Fulchari upazila election officer. BS Brajendra Nath and the journalists of print and electronic medical were present on the occasion.
A total of 87,628 voters including 42,460 male voters have registered their names with the voter lists in the upazila.
Receiving the final voter lists of the upazila, Syed Ali Imam, district election officer, thanked Bangladesh Army for making a fresh voter list in due time. The voter lists would be published for all very soon, he also said.

8 bailey bridges in deplorable condition in Dinajpur

8 Bailey Bridge in Dinajpur constructed under the regime of Ershad have been in deplorable condition which obstructing the vehicles' plying. The pedestrians and passengers are using the bridges taking risk of lives.
Sources aid, 3 bridges on Brigganj-Pirganj road, 3 are on Dinajpur-Parbotipur Road, one on Birganj-Kaharel road and other on Dinajpur-Fulbari road.
Locals feared anytime a fatal accident might be occurred. They urged theauthority concerned to repair the bailey bridges without any delay for the greater interest of the locals.

Minor boy killed in road accident in Sherpur
Sherpur, July 31: A minor boy was crushed under the wheels of a three-wheeler 'Nasimon' at Naksi crossing in Nalitabari upazila Friday. The deceased was identified as Akter Ali, 4, son of Mortuza Ali of Borabila village of the upazila. Local people said the boy was seriously injured when the Sherpur bound vehicle ran over him while he was crossing the road. He died on way to the Upazila Health Complex. Satkhira, July 26 : A mobile court on Thursday realized Tk 23,000 in fine from four hotels in the district town for unhygienic environment and serving substandard food items. Led by Executive Magistrate AKM Azadur Rahman, the mobile court conducted the drive in the city's New Market crossing area. During the drive, the court realized Tk 8,000 in fine from a hotel while Tk 5,000 each from three other hotels, report UNB.
Drug peddler jailed for five years
JHALAKATI, July 31: A court here on Sunday sentenced a woman to five years rigorous imprisonment in a drug peddling case. The convict was identified as Roksana Begum, 25, wife of Jamal Hawlader who is also under trial in another case at the same court. The court also fined Roksana Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer three months RI more. According to the prosecution, police recovered 70 bottles of phensidyl syrup from the house of Roksana at Krishnakati, on the outskirts of the town, last year. After examining the records and witnesses, Judge of Joint District and Session Judge's Court-1 M Liaqat Ali handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
Licenses of 188 rice mills cancelled
PABNA, July 31: The cancellation of licenses of 188 rice mills for violating agreement with the government has left several thousands male and female workers here jobless. The workless workers along with their families are now passing days in great hardships in time of price hike of essentials. Local Food Controller Office sources said they have set a target to procure 53,705 metric tons of rice and 4,700 metric tons of paddy at the government godowns this year. An agreement between Food Controller Office and 391 out of 551 rice mills was signed for supplying the food grains. But owners of 188 rice mills failed to supply rice within the time frame showing various reasons, including lack of working capital and financial losses. The sources said licenses of 161 rice mills were cancelled in Ishwardi upazila, 15 in Sadar, five in Atgharia, three in Chatmohar, two in Bera and one each in Bhangura and Suzanagar upazilas. Local sources said rice and paddy procurement drive here is likely to face setback this year, reports UNB.
460 sacks of fertilizer seized in Bagerhat
BAGERHAT, July 31: Some 460 sacks of illegally hoarded urea fertilizer were seized from a rice godown in Morelganj upazila on Sunday. Police, in presence of the officials of local administ-ration, searched the godown of rice dealer Bimol Roy and found 2,900 sacks of urea, of which, 460 sacks were illegal. Earlier, police seized 100 sacks of fertilizer from another godown of Bimol Roy on Thursday and sealed off the godown. Dealer Bimol Roy's three siblings-Shishir Roy, 40, Nakul Roy, 38, and Swapan Roy, 42, - were arrested on charge of hoarding the fertilizer, reports UNB.
