Body to stop sexual repression at educational institutions

The Education Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC) have jointly formed an 11- member national committee to stop and check sexual harassment and repression at higher educational institutions in the country.

UGC Member Professor Dr Zehadul Karim has been made convenor of the committee, a UGC press release said here on Tuesday.

Other members of the committee are Professor Amena Begum, Member of UGC, Professor AK Feroze Ahmad, Proctor of Dhaka University (DU), Professor SM Nurul Alam of Anthropology Department of Jahangirnagar University (JU), Professor Nasim Akhtar Hossain of Department of Government and Politics of JU, Professor Asma Siddiqa, Dean of Law Faculty of Rajshahi University, Professor Mehtab Khanam of Psychology Department of DU, Professor Abdul Hakim Sarkar of Social Welfare and Research Institute of DU, Professor Mosharraf Hossain of Sociology Department of Chittagong University, AZM Shafiqul Alam, Joint Secretary (university), Education Ministry, Advocate Salma Ali of Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association and Mohammad Fakhrul Islam, Acting Deputy Director of UGC.

The committee will start work soon on formulating laws and rules to stop and check sexual harassment and repression at higher educational institutions in the country, the release said.

With the enactment of the laws and rules, the UGC hopes, sexual harassment and repression would be stopped at higher educational institutions in the country.
