Cottage industry

fair begins

Sylhet, July 24: A month long textile and cottage industry fair began at Goalabazar in Balaganj upazila Thursday. Balaganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer M Rafiqul Alam inaugurated the fair as chief guest. A total of about 100 stalls have been set up in the fair, report UNB.

Three robbers arrested in Habiganj

Habiganj, July 24 : Detective Branch of police arrested three suspected robbers from Umednagar area of the district town Wednesday night. On secret information, police raided the area beside Habiganj-Lakhai road where the robbers were taking preparation for committing a dacoity at about 10 pm. Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the bandits went to nearby Kibria bridge to escape arrest. But police surrounded the area and arrested the robbers identified as Maksud Ali, 28, Abbasuddin, 25, and Nur-e Alam, 23. A case was filed, report UNB.

One sentenced to life in Jhalakati

Jhalakati, July 24: A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing a woman in 2004. The court also fined the convict Siddique Khalifa, 50, of Manki Dahar Shankar village in Rajapur upazila Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer two years RI more. According to the prosecution, Siddique Khalifa hacked Sahera Khatun, a widow, to death as she refused to marry him on March 28, 2004. After examining the records and witnesses, Additional District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rab Hawlader pronounced the verdict, report UNB.

3 arrested with touchstone statue

in Naogaon

Naogaon, July 24 : A special team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three smugglers along with a touchstone made statue of Lord Bishnu at Bamanchhata village in Mahadevpur upazila on Tuesday. Acting on a tip off, RAB-5 members went to the village in guise of statue buyers in the evening. When the smugglers showed them the statue, the elite force arrested traders Mosharraf Hossain, 42, Khademul Islam, 40, and Delwar Hossain, 32, from the spot. RAB sources estimated the value of the statue, weighing 71 kgs, at Tk 1 crore. The arrested were handed over to the local thana. A case was filed, report UNB.

70 sacks smuggled fertiliser seized

in Dinajpur

Dinajpur, July 24: BDR jawans seized 70 sacks of Potash fertilizer worth over Tk 1.5 lakh from a tractor at Dhaka crossing in Phulbari uapzila on Dinajpur-Gobindaganj road Wednesday. BDR sources said acting on a tip off when a BDR team stopped a tractor the smugglers and the tractor driver managed to flee away. Later, they recovered the substandard Indian fertilizer from the tractor which was brought from Hili land station. report UNB.

Phensidyl recovered in Chuadanga

CHUADANGA, July 24: Police recovered 140 bottles of phensidyl from Andulbaria village in Jibannagar upazila Sunday. Acting on a secret information police recovered the bottles of phensidyl from the pile of straw in the house of one Shamusl Haq of the village. None was arrested in this connection, reports UNB.

Lethal weapons recovered from SUST in Sylhet

Sylhet, July 23: Police recovered four hockey sticks, 20 stumps, two knives, 10 rods and 12 bamboo sticks from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Tuesday. The law enforcers raided the university campus and recovered these lethal weapons from a bush near SUST library at about 5pm, report UNB.
