39 arrested in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, July 23: Police arrested 39 persons including two drug- traffickers on various charges from different areas in city and nine upazilas of the district on Sunday. Of them 13 were rounded up from different areas in the metropolis while 26 others from nine upazilas. Police arrested the drug-traffickers identified as Alal Hossain, 29, and Rabiul Ahsan, 32, with 10 bottles of phensidyl and 90 vials of pathdin injection during two separate raids at different places in the city, report BSS.

RAB seized VOIP equipments in Ctg

CHITTAGONG, July 23: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive recovered huge Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) equipment worth about Taka 10 lakh from a house at Kazirdewri area under Kotwali police station in the city on Sunday, a RAB press release sai. The elite forces also seized 242 cans of beer from nearby Halishahar Bahumuki Somabai Samity area under Halishahar police station, report BSS.

Three siblings die in Sunamganj

Sylhet, July 23: Mystery shrouded the deaths of three siblings at Betauka village in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj district on Tuesday. The deceased were identified as Manjil Ali, 12, Abdul Ali, 8 and Rima Khatun, 14, children of day labourer M Abdul Kadir. Family sources said Manjil, Abdul Ali and Rima went to sleep Tuesday night after having their dinner. Abdul Kader with the help of his neighbours broke open the door of their bedroom getting no response from them on the following morning and found the three bodies lying on the bed. On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the morgue for autopsy, report UNB.

3 sentenced to different terms in Jhalakati

Jhalakati, July, 23: A court here on Wednesday sentenced a man to 10 years and two others to five years imprisonment each for attempting to violate a housewife. The court also fined the convict Abdul Bareque, who got 10 years imprisonment, to Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer one year RI more. Kabir and Mozammel, who got two years imprisonment each, were also fined Tk 3,000, in default, to suffer six months more RI. According to the prosecution, the convicts stormed into the house of Khadija Begum at Aubabunia village in Kathalia upazila and tried to violate her at about 1:30am on February 19, 2006 in absence of her husband. But they fled the house when she started shouting for help, report UNB.

Lineman electrocuted in Sunamganj

Sunamganj, Jul 23: A power office lineman was electrocuted in Judge Court area in Sadar upazila on Friday. The dead was identified as Riajat Ali, 40, son of late Hasan Ali of village Hasonnagar in the upazila. Riajat, a temporary lineman of the local power office, died on the spot when he came in contact with a live electric wire while repairing a power line at about 4pm. The body was sent to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. His elder brother also died from electrocution recently, local people said, report UNB.

Housewife killed in Kishoreganj

KISHOREGANJ, July 23: A housewife was strangulated to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Bahadia village in Pakundia upazila Wednesday midnight. The dead was identified as Nadira Begum, 20, daughter of Haris Uddin. Local people said Safir Uddin married Nadira of the same village barely 10 months ago and since then he used to torture her for dowry. On the fateful night he asked her to bring dowry money from her parents and on her refusal he with the help of his two brothers strangled her, reports UNB.
