Hollywood: Oscar watchers dampen award hype for Ledger’s Joker

Los Angeles, Agencies

Hollywood has a long history of seeing big stars - James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and Bruce Lee among them - appearing in high-profile films released after their untimely deaths.

O'Neil said that when Finch died, Hollywood was in the middle of Oscar season and also in shock. Prior to that, Robert De Niro was sweeping the critics' awards for 'Taxi Driver.'

Veteran Oscar watcher O'Neil also sees parallels between the truncated careers of Ledger and James Dean.

"Like Heath, James Dean was a heartthrob star who was considered a serious actor, who died tragically young," O'Neil said. "He was nominated twice posthumously, for "East of Eden" and "Giant," and he lost both times." Even the legendary Spencer Tracy was ignored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which gives out the Oscars, after he died in 1967 just as "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?" was coming out in theatres. And he was the front-runner, O'Neil said. Tracy's co-star Katharine Hepburn did win best actress for "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?"

Bollywood: Ranvir Shorey, Konkona Sen engaged?

Mumbai, IANS

Rumours are rife that Ranvir Shorey and Konkona Sen-Sharma are as engaged to one another as can be, but neither party is willing to talk about it.

When Ranvir was asked why the secrecy, he said: "It's a personal choice. We like to keep our personal life away from the limelight. All I can say is I'm very content with my life and career."

Ranvir would much rather talk about his film with US-based Indian filmmaker Mira Nair. Titled "How Can It Be", it also has Konkona. They've worked together before in a wife-swapping film, 'Mixed Doubles,' and Madhur Bhandarkar's "Traffic Signal".

"But this project is very special. It is a short film - part of a series on human rights made by the likes of Jane Campion, Gus Van Sant and Jim Wenders. Mira's film is about women's emancipation and we shot it in New York. Konkona plays the central character, but my role is no less pivotal," Ranvir told IANS. The role went to Ranvir after Mira's favourite Irrfan Khan turned it down.

"So I believe," laughed Ranvir. "I think he refused it. But Mira says I was always her first choice. In fact, I met Irrfan in New York when we shot with Mira. He was doing another short film with Mira co-starring Natalie Portman."

Konkona was all but signed to play Tabu's role in Mira Nair's "The Namesake". She had opted out because the dates clashed with her mother Aparna Sen's "17 Park Avenue". Ranvir says working with Konkona is an easy experience. "It's an advantage to work with a friend. You can speak your mind freely without the fear of offending the other party." But it wasn't same with his "Ugly Aur Pagli" co-star Mallika Sherawat.

Music: Britney given more access to sons

BBC Online

Pop star Britney Spears and her former husband Kevin Federline have reached an agreement that allows the singer more overnight visits with her children.

The settlement was agreed with lawyers and a Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner in a closed-door session.

Ms Spears' attorney, Laura Wasser, said the 26-year-old will be able to spend more time with her young sons.

She said Mr Federline, 30, would retain full custody, but Ms Spears may get expanded rights by the end of the year.

'Extremely happy'

Neither Ms Spears nor Mr Federline attended the hearing. The agreement also means a custody trial that had been scheduled for next month will not take place now.

Ms Wasser told The Associated Press the singer will now have three visits a week from Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, with at least two overnight visits. "The fact is, it's a win for the family," she said.

Lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan, who represents Mr Federline, said his client was also pleased that an agreement had been reached.
