The court of District and Sessions Judge here in the port city yesterday convicted four brothers among 10 murderers and ordered them to serve rigorous imprisonment for 10 years.

Each of the convicts has also been slapped Taka 50 thousand as penalty failure in paying it would require defaulter to serve an additional year of imprisonment.

The convicted brothers were identified as Selim Hosssain, Zakir Hossain, Anwar Hossain and Monir Hossain while three of the six convicts were Rezaul Karim, Golam Morshed and M Rafique. Three absconding convicts were Forkan Ali, Jalal Ahmed and Saber Ahmed.

Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 Ekramul Haq Chowdhury pronounced the verdict at a jam-packed courtroom this afternoon.

Public prosecutor said that Sultan Ahmed backed by his five sons and their fellows attacked Jtiyatabadi Jubo Dal (JJD) leader Farid Ahmed on March 23, 1996. The attackers killed him by lethal weapons when Farid attempted to resist an illegal move to build a wall at Dobapara in Halishahar.

Police after thorough investigation prepared the charge sheet accusing 12 people of the killing and subsequently submitted it to the court on June 30, 1996.

The main accused on the charge sheet Sultan Ahmmed died of cardiac failure while under custody in 2001 and his elder son Delwar in 2005.
