Housewife's body found in Sylhet

SYLHET, July 14: The body of a newly-wed housewife was recovered from Lalarchak village Kanaighat upazila Thursday. The dead was identified as Monwara Begum, 19, daughter of Aziruddin of nearby Khalopar village. Police said Monwara Begum got married with Dubai expatriate Abdul Matin three months back. She was found dead in her bedroom in the morning. Police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.

One gets 7 year imprisonment

for killing

KISHOREGANJ, July 14: A man was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment by a court here on Thursday for killing his step-mother four years back. The court also fined the convict Hanif Tk 20,000, in default, to suffer two years more in jail. According to the prosecution, Hanif of Vitigaon village in Kuliarchar upazila following a family feud hit his step-mother Fulbanu, 45, on her head with a sharp weapon on May 5, 2003, leaving her critically injured. She was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex where the attending doctors declared her dead, reports UNB.

DPHE installs 1089 tubewells in Pirojpur

PIROJPUR, July 14: Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) installed 1,089 tubewells in the district during the last fiscal year involving Tk 5.69 crore to ensure supply of pure water. Of the total tubewells, 69 were installed in sadar upazila, 411 in Swarupkati, 195 in Bhandaria, 405 in Mothbaria and nine in Ziangagar upazilas. The scheme was implemented with the financial assistance of Danida. DPHE also re-excavated 1422 ponds in the district during the same fiscal year involving Tk 50 lakh, reports UNB.

Valuables looted in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, July 14: Robbers stormed into two flats on one floor of a building in Porra area of the district town and looted cash and valuables worth Tk 2 lakh Tuesday midnight. Sources said the robbers numbering 25/30 broke open the doors of the residences of Ispahani Tobacco Company officer Maniruzzaman and medical representative of a medicine company Jahangir Hossain. They tied up the hands and legs of the inmates and took away Tk 50,000 in cash, seven tolas of gold ornaments and other valuables worth Tk 2 lakh. Separate cases were filed with the police, reports UNB.

Youth slaughtered in Jessore

JESSORE, July 14: A young man was slaughtered by some unknown assailants in the district town on Wednesday. The dead was identified as Sharif, 26, son of Osman Gani of Rail Road area. Police quoting family sources said Sharif did not return home since he went out of his house in the evening. After a hectic search his family members found his slaughtered body from behind the district central jail Thursday morning. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.

Fish fry to be distributed among sidr-hit fish farmers

JHALAKATI, July 14: Fish fry worth about Tk 97 lakh will be distributed among 3,512 Sidr-hit fish farmers of the district to make them self-reliant. Deputy Commissioner Horiprasad Pal inaugurated the programme by distributing 2.8 lakh fry among 154 fish farmers of Basonda union in Sadar upazila Thursday. Local NGO JDS is imple-menting the programme with the financial assistance of USAID, reports UNB.
