Event: APPL launches book on solid waste management

A launching ceremony of book titled 'Municipal Solid Waste Management Bangladesh Perspective' was held at the National Press Club in the city on Saturday. The book was written by KM Nurul Huda. Academic Press and Publication Library (APPL) published the book.

Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, former adviser to the Caretaker Government and Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, was present as chief guest, while Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley, Chairman of APPL and Centre for Development and Research Bangladesh, chaired the programme.

Prof Dr M Feroz Ahmed of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Eng Iftekhar Enayetullah, Director of Waste Concern, reviewed the book.

Prof Jamilur Reza in his speech said, "It is an easily readable book. It has given and pragmatic insights for the readers including researchers, officials, stakeholders and beneficiaries."

Dr Shelley said, Literature on the subject, especially so far as it concerns developing countries, is scares, unsystematic and scared. The author mounts a timely and relevant effort in this area through this book."

Shahina Rahman, Managing Director of APPL, among others, were present at the launching ceremony.

Short description of the book:

About 27 millions people of five millions households from 229 city corporations and municipalities of Bangladesh are responsible for generation of more or less 13,000 MT of municipal solid wastes a day. Improper management of municipal solid waste keeps the environment, public health, comfort of the residents and aesthetic beauty of a city or town at a state of vulnerability. Proper management of municipal solid waste has been an urge of the city dwellers for leading a decent and hygienic livelihood. The book has dealt with these aspects of requirements and shown affordable ways and means to overcome the problems. Elaborate discussion on the features like - Overview of Bangladesh, generation, collection and disposal of wastes, social responsibility, financial management, economic issues, and legal and regulatory aspects for appropriate management of municipal solid wastes has been taken place in the book for taking the readers on the real situation of municipal solid waste of Bangladesh. It has outlined the possibility of making waste into wealth through both conventional and advanced methods of disposal. The book has ascribed the responsibility and ability of stakeholders and beneficiaries in this area of concern.
