Event: APPL launches book on solid waste management

A launching ceremony of book titled 'Municipal Solid Waste Management Bangladesh Perspective' was held at the National Press Club in the city on Saturday. The book was written by KM Nurul Huda. Academic Press and Publication Library (APPL) published the book.

Prof Dr Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, former adviser to the Caretaker Government and Vice Chancellor of BRAC University, was present as chief guest, while Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley, Chairman of APPL and Centre for Development and Research Bangladesh, chaired the programme.

Prof Dr M Feroz Ahmed of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Eng Iftekhar Enayetullah, Director of Waste Concern, reviewed the book.

Prof Jamilur Reza in his speech said, "It is an easily readable book. It has given and pragmatic insights for the readers including researchers, officials, stakeholders and beneficiaries."

Dr Shelley said, Literature on the subject, especially so far as it concerns developing countries, is scares, unsystematic and scared. The author mounts a timely and relevant effort in this area through this book."

Shahina Rahman, Managing Director of APPL, among others, were present at the launching ceremony.

Short description of the book:

About 27 millions people of five millions households from 229 city corporations and municipalities of Bangladesh are responsible for generation of more or less 13,000 MT of municipal solid wastes a day. Improper management of municipal solid waste keeps the environment, public health, comfort of the residents and aesthetic beauty of a city or town at a state of vulnerability. Proper management of municipal solid waste has been an urge of the city dwellers for leading a decent and hygienic livelihood. The book has dealt with these aspects of requirements and shown affordable ways and means to overcome the problems. Elaborate discussion on the features like - Overview of Bangladesh, generation, collection and disposal of wastes, social responsibility, financial management, economic issues, and legal and regulatory aspects for appropriate management of municipal solid wastes has been taken place in the book for taking the readers on the real situation of municipal solid waste of Bangladesh. It has outlined the possibility of making waste into wealth through both conventional and advanced methods of disposal. The book has ascribed the responsibility and ability of stakeholders and beneficiaries in this area of concern.

Onno Boshonto, a 16-episode new drama serial, started from May 17 on ATN Bangla.

Taukir Ahmed, Richi Solaiman, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Dilara Zaman, Shahidul Alam Sacchu, Shamim Zaman, Sharmin Shila, Saleh Ahmed, Dr Inamul Haque, AKM Hasan, Jhuna Chowdhury, among others, are main performers of the serial.

The drama serial based on three separate stories. But there is a connection among the stories. Among the mess members, Maznu is senior to others. He is a service holder. He did not get married. Mamun is searching job after completion of study. He has an affair with Nitu. Ranju and Abir are studying. Manager of the mess takes loans from them, but did not return them. His main duty is to look after the maidservant of the mess. Father of Nitu is practicing herbal medicine and wants to open a chamber in his house. He has a conflict with his wife in this regard. His son-in-law is jobless. He lost huge amount of money in the name of opening of various projects. Ant cultivation was one of them. This is the story of Onno Boshonto.

The serial is aired at 9:15am on ATN Bangla every Monday.

Event: Gandaria Kishalaya Kochi-Kanchar Mela celebrates 36 years

The three-day programmes to celebrate 36 years of Gandaria Kishalaya Kochi-Kanchar Mela were ended on July 12.

The three-day programme was inaugurated on July 10. On that day an exhibition of 'Grameen Phone Zainul-Quamrul International Children Art Competition 2007' was inaugurated at the Mela premises at Gandaria in the city on July 10. Professor Dr Hayat Mahmud, language expert and litterateur, inaugurated the exhibition. The show was ended on July 12. A rally under the banner of 'Shishu Ananda Rally' was held from Muktangan to Shishu Academy on July 11. Hazi Md Liakat Ali, Commissioner of Ward No 81, inaugurated the rally as chief guest, while Mobarak Hossain, Commissioner of Ward No 76, was present as special guest on the occasion. Mohammad Shafiur Rahman Dulu, Director of the Mela, announced formal ending of the rally. Md Jalal Uddin, Adviser of the Mela, Morshed Ahmed Chowdhury, Badrul Ahsan Sinha, Zakir Hossain, Alif Hamza, Sufia Khanam Jolly, Syed Nabil Ashraf Faisal, among others, were present at the rally.

A discussion meeting and cultural function was held on July 11 where District Commissioner, Dhaka Kamal Uddin was present as chief guest, while litterateur Imdadul Haque Milon was present special guest on the occasion.

Hollywood: Angelina Jolie gives birth to twins

The Brangelina twins are here: Angelina Jolie has given birth to a girl and a boy. The obstetrician who delivered the twins, Dr. Michel Sussmann, told The Associated Press that the actress, the babies and Jolie's partner, actor Brad Pitt, "are doing marvelously well."

Sussmann said Jolie gave birth to a boy, Knox Leon, and a girl, Vivienne Marcheline, by Cesarian section Saturday night. He told the AP on Sunday morning that the boy weighed 5.03 pounds and the girl 5 pounds.

Pitt was there during the operation, said the doctor, who delivered the twins at the seaside Lenval hospital in Nice in southern France. "Everything is going well," said Sussmann.

"The mother, the babies, the father are doing marvelously well." He said the Cesarian was moved forward from its originally planned date "for medical reasons" so that the babies could be born "in the best conditions." Sussman did not give details. The doctor said Jolie is expected to stay in the hospital for a few more days.

News Release: Mothura Shishu Kanan celebrates Nazrul’s birth anniversary

Mothura Shishu Kanan organised a discussion meeting and cultural function at Kachi-Kancha Auditorium in the city on Saturday to celebrate the 109th birth anniversary of the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Veteran journalist and cultural activist Kamal Lohani was present as chief guest at the meeting, while Gazi Golam Dastagir Bir Protik, JL Bhowmik, Lion Md Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, journalist Khondaker Mozammel Haque,among others, were present on the occasion.

Nazrul artiste MA Mannan was present as main judge of the cultural competition. Ashim Kumar Sarkar chaired the meeting.

News Release: Noksha launches T-shirt on Al Mahmud’s birthday

On observance of 73rd birth anniversary of poet Al Mahmud, fashion house Noksha launched new T-shirts inscribed with poetries and photographs of Al Mahmud on July 10, said a news release.

To celebrate the day a gathering was held at sells center of Noksha at Capital Market in Dhanmondi on Thursday.
