5th death anniversary of Barrister Ishtiaq today

The fifth anniversary of death of former Adviser to caretaker government Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed will be observed today.
On this occasion, Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Smriti Parishad has arranged programmes including placing wreaths and offering fateha at his grave at Banani and holding a Milad Mahfil at an orphanage, a press release said yesterday.
During his eventual life, Barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed had made immense contribution in the legal arena of Bangladesh and acted as an Attorney General for Bangladesh and an adviser to the caretaker government in 1996 and 2001.
Valuables worth Tk 3 lakh looted in city
UNB, Dhaka
Robbers looted valuables, worth about Tk 3 lakh, from the house of a former civil officer of Air Force at East Manikdi in city's Cantonment area early on Friday.
Police said a gang of robbers entered the house of Nurul Islam at 28/1, East Manikdi by breaking window grills and held the inmates hostage at gun point.
They looted valuables, including five tolas of gold ornament at about 4am and left the house without any hindrance.
However, police did not make any arrest in this connection.
A case was filed with Cantonment police station.
18 hurt in Thakurgaon lightning
UNB, Thakurgaon
Eighteen students of an orphanage were injured in a lightning at Old Thakurgaon in Sadar upazila yesterday.
Witnesses said the lightning struck on the mosque of Lillah Boarding Orphanage while they were preparing for Asr prayers.
Ten of the injured-Faisal, 15, Delwar Hossain, 14, Shariful Islam, 22, Safiqul Islam, 13, Abdul Halim, 13, Delwar, 15, Raju, 13, Mehedi Hasan, 13, Shahjahan, 12, and Nawab, 12 -- were admitted to Sadar hospital.
Pankaj Debnath hospitalised
UNB, Dhaka
Detained Swechhasebak League general secretary Pankaj Debnath has been hospitalised with cardiac problems.
Party sources said Pankaj fell ill early yesterday in Gazipur Jail and was rushed to National Institute of Cardiovascular and Chest Diseases in the morning.
He was arrested on graft charges after the caretaker government launched the anti-corruption drive.
