Iran tests more missiles: US pledges to defend allies

Iran tested more missiles in the Gulf on Thursday, state media said, and the United States pledged to defend its allies against any Iranian aggression.
Washington, which fears Tehran wants to master technology to build nuclear weapons, said after Iran test fired nine missiles on Wednesday that Tehran should halt further missile tests if it wanted to gain the world's trust.
Iran said the missiles could hit Israeli and U.S. bases.

DMC Day observed: Steps taken to ensure standard of private medical colleges

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Dr AMM Shawkat Ali yesterday said that steps were taken to formulate guidelines examining the existing policies for ensuring the standard of private medical colleges.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion at Shaheed Dr Milon Hall organised on the occasion of the 62nd founding anniversary of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) and celebration of the DMC Day.
The Health Adviser laid emphasis on strengthening the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) for monitoring and supervision of the activities of medical and dental colleges of the country.

Badsha nominated for Rajshahi city polls: AL-led 14-Party name 4 mayoral candidates

The Awami League (AL) led 14-party alliance yesterday formally announced the name of its mayoral candidates to the four city corporations polls scheduled for August 4.
The announcement came after a two-day long hectic meeting of the key-leaders of the alliance at the Gulshan residence of AL Acting President Zillur Rahman in the evening.
The meting unanimously nominated Fazle Hossain Badsha for Rajshahi, Badaruddin Kamran for Sylhet, Talukder Abdul Khaleq for Khulna and Shawkat Hossain Hiron for Barisal City Corporation.

Obama may pick Hillary as running mate Unannounced stop at Washington

Barack Obama stoked vice presidential speculation Wednesday with an unannounced stop at the Washington law firm of a search team member and then a flight to New York fundraisers with potential pick Hillary Rodham Clinton and a second vetter.
"I'm not going to tell you" any details, the smiling likely Democratic nominee told reporters after spending more than two hours inside a downtown office building where attorney Eric Holder, a member of his vice presidential search committee, has offices.

JCD holds rally demands release of Khaleda, Tarique

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP, yesterday staged demonstration on Dhaka University campus demanding release of all national leaders particularly Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman.
JCD declared that it would observe consecutive programmes which will include student chain on July 13, hunger strike on July 15 and submission of memorandum to the Chief Adviser on July 17 to realise their demands.
JCD activists from different universities and colleges gathered in the morning in front of the Modhu`s canteen of the university and brought out a demonstration that paraded throughout the campus.

Iran should shun language of war, while showing resolve to defend itself
Iran's test firing of nine long and medium range missiles Wednesday and their wide condemnation in the United States, notably by the White House and the two main candidates for the presidency, heightened tension in the Gulf region.
Meanwhile, Gen. Hossein Salami, the air force commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, said in a statement that the exercise would "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language".
"Our hands are always on the trigger and our missiles are ready for launch," the official IRNA news agency quoted Salami as saying Wednesday.
