News Briefs Farmer killed in lightning in Pabna Pabna, July 3 : A farmer was killed and two others were injured in a thunderbolt during rainfall at Haludbaria village in Sadar upazila Thursday. Local sources said Hafizuddin, 36, a farmer of the village, died on the spot and two other local farmers were injured as lightning struck them while they were working on their land at about 7am. Two injured farmers were identified as Abdul Khaleque and Qiyam Uddin Molla. Of them, Khaleque was admitted to local hospital, report UNB. Tree fair begins in Bagerhat Bagerhat, July 3: A 10-day tree fair began here at Swadhinata Udyan in the district town on Thursday morning. Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam inaugurated the fair, jointly organized by the district administration, Social Forest Department and Department Agriculture Extension. A colorful rally was also arranged on the occasion this morning. Discussion and cultural functions will also be held on the fair premises in the evening daily, organizers said, report UNB. Five pirates arrested in Munshiganj Munshiganj, July 3: Five alleged pirates were caught red handed along with a trawler from Meghna River near Purachak Baushia area of Gozaria upazila early Wednesday. Fishermen and local people caught Salauddin, 28, Ripon Miah, 25, M Sagar, 22, Ujjal, 22, and Abu Kalam, 21, when they were preparing to commit a piracy at about 1:00am. One of their accomplices, however, managed to flee the scene. Later, the arrested pirates were handed over to the police, report UNB. Madrasha student electrocuted in Chandpur Chandpur, July 3: A madrassah student was electrocuted at Moiddhya Eacholy village in Sadar upazila on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mohammad Sarwar, 11, student of class-III of Natun Bazar Ahmadia Madrassah. Police said Sarwar came in contact with a live electric wire while playing football with his playmates near his house. Local people rushed him to the Sadar hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead, report UNB. One gets 10 yrs imprisonment in Shariatpur Shariatpur, July 3 : A tribunal here on Tuesday sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment for possessing illegal firearms. The convict was identified as Abdul Malek hailed from Bashgari village in Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district. According to the prosecution, RAB members arrested Abdul Malek along with a pipe gun and two rounds of bullet from Kaligar village in Gosairhat upazila on July 18, 2006. After examining the witnesses and records Judge of Tribunal-1 M Azizur Rahman pronounced the verdict. In another case, the same Judge also sentenced four people to seven years rigorous imprisonment each in an extortion case on the same day. The convicts are Masud Ali, Shajahan Mollah, Suruj Sheikh and Jahangir Rari, report UNB. Two youths commit suicide in Sylhet Sylhet, July 3 : Two young men allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves in Balaganj Upazila on Sunday and Monday. On information, police recovered the hanging body of Jasim, 20, at Khashikapon village on Sunday night while Paritosh Shil, 23, from Swapna Mansion of Goalabazar on Monday noon. The bodies were sent to the morgue for autopsy. Reasons behind their suicide could not be known immediately, report UNB.
