Dr. G C Dev's birth centenary celebrated

The birth centenary of world renowned philosopher and humanist Dr Gobinda Chandra Dev, popularly known as Dr G C Dev, was celebrated in a befitting manner on the Dhaka University campus on Friday.

The DU Philosophy Department Alumni Association and the Department of Philosophy of DU jointly organized a daylong programme to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of martyred intellectual Dr. G C Dev.

A Professor of the Department of Philosophy of DU, Dr. G C Dev was brutally killed along with other Bangali intellectuals by the Pakistani forces during the War of Liberation.

Acting Vice-chancellor of DU Professor A F M Yusuf Haider inaugurated the day's programme with National Professor Kabir Chowdhury attending it as the chief guest. Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed was in the chair.

Emeritus Professors Dr. Sirajul Islam Chowdhury and Dr.

Anisuzzaman, Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Nazrul Islam, Former Chairman of the Philosophy Department Professor Dr Aminul Islam and Dr Jyotiprokash Dutta, son of Dr G C Dev, among others, discussed the life and career of this great academic.

Dr G C Dev was born in a respectable family on February 1, 1907, in Bianibazar upazila under Sylhet district. He joined the DU Philosophy Department as a Professor in 1953. Before joining Dhaka University, he was the Principal of Surendhranath College in Dinajpur since 1945.

Dr. Dev got the Ekushey Padak (posthumous) in 1985 and Swadhinata Puraskar (posthumous) in 2008 for his glorious contributions in the field of education.
