The High Court yesterday declared valid the February 2007 decision of the interim government cancelling the selection of 757 police sub-inspectors, including sergeants.

After hearing both parties, a division bench, comprising Justice MA Rashid and Justice M Ashfaqul Islam, delivered the judgment, discharging its rule issued on February 19 last year following a writ petition filed by a dozen aggrieved persons.

In February last year, the police authorities, after a probe report, cancelled the selection of cops recruited through gross irregularities like bribery, political influence and nepotism at the fag end of the immediate-past BNP-led four-party rule.

About 90 percent of those recruits were learnt to have been workers of BNP, its student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jamaat-e-Islami's student front Islami Chhatra Shibir and relatives of the then ruling-coalition high-ups, the probe report said.
