DESA dissolved: New company set to take over today

Today happens to be the last day for Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA) as an operational body as the newly created Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) takes over its entire operations right from today midnight.
The newborn entity in the problematic power sector will embark upon its journey from July 1 as per the Cabinet decision of the caretaker government, while the DESA, an 18-year-old power-distribution outfit for the capital, will stand dissolved under the process.

4-party under pressure to take part in local polls

The leaders of the four-party alliance are now facing pressure from grassroots leaders for taking a positive decision to take part in the ensuing local government elections scheduled to be held on August 4.
Many prospective candidates of the alliance particularly belonging to BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami are now spending busy time in meeting and lobbying with party hierarchy to get their blessings.
They go to the residences of senior party leaders and try to convince them for taking part in the polls.

Colombo SAARC summit to focus on connectivity, food security

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said here Sunday that the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo would focus on greater connectivity, food security and meeting growing demand for energy among the member states.
Talking to reporters after a meeting with Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury at state guesthouse Padma, he said the theme of the 15th summit to be held on August 2-3 is 'partnership for the people of SAARC'.
"We'll continue to focus on connectivity and transform it into partnership for the people of SAARC," said Bogollagama who came here on Saturday night to formally hand over invitation to Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed to attend the summit.

Lanka score 302/7, Pakistan struggling

Pakistan are struggling to avoid almost confirm defeat when they scored 182 for the loss of six wickets in 43 overs in reply to Sri Lanka's total of 302 for the loss of seven wickets in the regulation 50 overs.
Misbah-ul-Huq (56) and Sarfraz (10) were at the crease till filing this report.
Skipper Shoaib Malik made 52 playing 79 deliveries with three fours while Younus Khan hit 47 off 60 balls amid seven fours. Earlier, opener Kumar Sangakkara hit a fine 112 faced 110 deliveries. His innings was laced with 10 fours and a six.

Mirpur Girls’ Ideal School achieves excellent results in SSC exam: Our students will do better in years ahead, says Principal

Mirpur Girls' Ideal Laboratory Institute (MGILI), one of the leading educational institutions in Dhaka city, has achieved excellent results at this year's Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations.
A total of 91 students belonging to the Bangla Medium of the MGILI have achieved GPA-5 (A+) from both Science and Commerce Group. The institute has also achieved 100 per cent pass rate.
Besides, for the first time, the English Medium Section of the institute made excellent results. Two students of the English Medium Section achieved GPA-5 (A+), while three students have attained GPA-4.

President back to Bangabhaban

BSS, Dhaka

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed on Sunday returned to Bangabhaban after taking treatment of viral fever at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) here.
The President was admitted to the CMH on June 23 night as he was suffering from viral fever with high temperature.
The medical board for the President after checking up his physical condition recommended his release from the hospital.
The President thanked the members of medical board, attending doctors and nurses of the CMH and all concerned for extending their sincere services to him.
