News briefs Erosion takes serious turn in Goalanda GOALANDA (Rajbari), June 26: Erosion by the Padma River has taken a serious turn in the uapzila due to rise in water level in the river and squally weather. Many people of the upazila, living near the river bank, have shifted their dwellings and took shelter to safer places. The worst affected areas are-Bethuri, Gopalpur Bhaba-nipur and Shitalpur of Devgram union and Dakkhin Dhopagathi, Ishail Shibra-mpur, Uttar Daula-tdia and ferryghat area of Daulatdia union. Sources said the three ferry ghats have been facing great risk due to the erosion and these might be washed away at any time, reports UNB. Female student commits suicide in Jhalakati JHALAKATI, June 26: A female college student allegedly committed suicide in Katpatti area of the district town on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Labony alias Happy, 19, daughter of local small trader Abdus Salam Hawlader and 2nd year accounting student of Barisal BM College. Family sources said Labony took her life hanging from the ceiling of her room at midnight as her parents did not agree to permit her to prosecute her study living in college hostel. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB 2 drug peddlers arrested in Bagerhat BAGERHAT, June 26: Police arrested two drug peddlers with heroin from Jaria Maitkumra village of Lakhpur union under Fakirhat upazila on Sunday. Police said, the arrested were identified as Aslam Mollah, 45, and Mannan Hajam, 38. Aslam Mollah is a member of Lakhpur Union Parishad. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided the house of Aslam at Lakhpur and arrested them along with heroin, reports BSS. SI dies in Alamdanga CHUADANGA, June 26: Abdul Quader, a sub-inspector of police, died of a brain hemorrhage at his Alamdanga Thana Para residence on Sunday. He was 50, Alamdanga thana sources said. Family sources said SI Abdul Quader died soon after he return home in the evening from his duty at Chuadanga police line. He left behind wife, four sons and a daughter to mourn his death, reports BSS. Abducted contractor released at Rangamati RANGAMATI, June 26: Mohammad Salim Hossain, a contractor, who was abducted by a group of terrorists for ransom on June 15, was freed from captivity on Monday afternoon. Sources said he was released from Sazek area, under Baghaichhari upazila, about 138 km off from the district headquarter. Police with the help of Mohammad Syed, secretary of Durchhari Bazar and Priyo Nandan Chakma, chairman of Sarwatoli Union Parishad rescued the abducted contractor, reports BSS. Motorbike rider killed in accident TANGAIL, June 26: A motor bike rider killed when his bike collided head on at Nazirpara under Mirzapur upazila on Dhaka-Tangail Highway on Monday. The dead was identified as Abbas Ali, 28, of Banshtoil village of the same upazila. Police sources said the accident took place when a Rajshshi bound truck hit the motor bike of Abbas Ali leaving him dead on the spot, reports BSS.
