Students asked to take proper knowledge to flourish talents

Speakers here in a stipend distribution ceremony on Friday said that the students should acquire proper knowledge to flourishing their talents and becoming worthy citizens of the soil to lead the nation in future.

They said this at the stipend distribution ceremony organised by Rangpur unit of The Optists Bangladesh (TOB) under its Child Sponsorship Programme at Rangpur Scouts Bhaban auditorium.

Director of Rangpur unit of the TOB M Nurul Islam chaired the occasion where stipends and education inputs were distributed among 30 school level talented students.

Former Regional Director of Thakurgaon Betar Kendra Monwara Begum, Scouts Commissioner Rafique Hasnine, Agriculturist Nazrul Islam Bosunia, guardian Abul Quasem, Advocate Abu Bakkar, teacher Mahfuzar Rahman, addressed, among others.

A total of 28 school level students were given Taka 2,000 each and two other students were given Taka 2,500 each as stipends and all of them were given educational inputs on the occasion for encouraging them in their studies.

4 roads named after freedom fighters in Kasba

Four new roads have been named after four distinguished persons including three valiant freedom fighters in Kashba Poursabha in the district. The roads were formally inaugurated on Friday. Kashba Upazila Nirhabi Officer Mohammad Jahangir Alam unveiled the plaques in presence of freedom fighters and local elite.

The new name of the roads are Sector Commander Shaheed Khaled Mosharraf, Bir Uttam Road, Sector Commander Shaheed Lt. Azizul Islam, Bir Bikram Road, Freedom fighter Shaheed Syed Imam Hossain Road and Peer Kamel Asgar Ahmed Road.

Quality pry edn for achieving national dev underscored

Speakers at a function stressed the need for ensuring quality primary education for achieving national development through increasing the attendance of the students and decreasing the dropout rates of the poor students.

They said this while addressing the inaugurating session of a daylong training course at the hall room of Shaheed Minor Government Primary School of the upazila under the project of stipend for education.

Upazila Education office organized the training course.

District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) M. Golam Nabi addressed the function as the chief guest while district- monitoring officer (stipend) Khandaker Hasan Mahbubur Rahman was present as special guest.

National award obtained head teacher of Shibran Government primary school of the upazila M. Nurul Alam was the chief discussant.

Presided over by upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) M. Barad Hossain Chowdhury, the function was also addressed ,among others, by upazila Education officer M. Anwoarul Islam, instructor of upazila Resource centre Abdul Mannan, district correspondent of the BSS M. Shahiduzzaman and head teacher of Taluk Sarbananda Govt. Primary school Farida Yasmin.

A total of 98 head teachers including public representatives participated in the training course.

Notorious terrorist held with pipe gun in Netrakona

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged absconding terrorist and illegal firearms holder from village Kakarkanda under Durgapur upazila of the district on Friday night.

Police and RAB sources said, acting on a secret information, a team of the RAB-9 led by Major Mahedi Hasan cordoned off a residence at the village and caught the terrorist Abdul Awal (37) red-handed and recovered one pipe gun and two round of ammunitions from his possession.

The arrested Awal was the son of one Abdus Satter of the same village. He was wanted in connections with 12 criminal cases, including terrorism, dacoity and extortion, pending with Durgapur Police station.

The arrested terrorist was taken to RAB office in Mymensingh for interrogation, the sources added.

RDRS conducts cattlehead vaccination programme in Birganj

Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) with the assistance of Upazila Lives-tocks Department and Polli Artho-Samajik Unna-yan Parishad (PAUP) conducted a cattle vaccination progr-amme at Birganj upazila town of Dinajpur district on Saturday.

The RDRS organised the programme with a view to save lives of the cattle heads and chicks of the aboriginal people from various diseases including Torka, Badla, Khurarog and chicks diseases.

Birganj Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Abdur Rahim, Executive Director of PAUP Nur Hossain Hiru, Manager of RDRS (Crops) Rabiul Karim, local elite and journalists were present while conducting the vaccination programme.

The NGO has been conducting the vaccination programme in the remote areas of all eight districts of greater Rangpur as a part of its annual programme, the RDRS officials said.

'Computer knowledge a must for quality education’

Speakers at a certificate giving ceremony here today underscored the need for acquiring proper knowledge on information technology and computer for ensuring quality education in the 21st century.

They said this while addressing the concluding ceremony of a training course organised by BIAM Foundation, Rangpur at the auditorium of BIAM Model School and College in the city with Additional District Magistrate and Director of BIAM Foundation, Rangpur Faruque Hossain in the chair.

Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur Khondker Atiar Rahman attended as the chief guest and distributed certificates among the college, school and Madrasha level teachers, who successfully completed basic computer course at the Foundation.

Birthday of Poet Nirmolendu Goon celebrated

The 64th birthday of noted Poet Nirmolendu Goon was celebrated at his birth place at village Kasban under Barhatta upazila in the on Saturday.

The Nirmolendu Goon's birth day celebration committee organised various colourful programmes, including a poetry recitation session, discussion and cultural function.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Barhatta upazila Mukammel Haque inaugurated the birth day celebration function as the chief guest by cutting a cake.

ASA disburses Tk 86.13 cr micro-credit in Rajshahi

ASA, one of the leading NGOs in the country, has so far disbursed over Taka 86.13 crore micro-credit among 1,61,114 poor and marginal people in the district till last March.

This was revealed at a views sharing meeting on 'ASA's Loan Activities in Poverty Reduction' with journalists and members of the civil society at its office here on Saturday.

ASA District Manger SM Belal Hossain and Additional District Manager Saiful Islam addressed the meeting as focal persons and said the loans were disbursed through 560 workers in 13 field offices located in both urban and rural areas. They said all the remote villages of the district were brought under the micro-credit and development programmes and the rate recovery is 100 per cent.

Terming employment generation as the tested means of poverty reduction they said ASA has been implementing different micro-credit progr-ammes aimed at creating small entrepreneurs. Various need-based sectors like small business, education, healthcare assistance, agro-business and disaster rehabilitation were given top-priority under the lending programme. Apart from this, importance is also being given to self- reliance, transparency and decentr-alization, automation and job- creation aimed at making the society free from poverty that is very essential for the nation, they added.

Dacoity committed in Moulvibazar

A dacoity was committed at a house at Pahar Barshijora village under sadar upazila on Sunday night.

Sources said a gang of dacoits stormed in to the house of Wahid Miah, an expatriate living in the United Kingdom, who came to visit his ancestral home recently. The dacoits tied the inmates of the house at gun point and looted Taka four lakh, gold ornaments weighing about 20 bhories and other valuables from the house. .

45,000 farmers get subsidy in Meherpur

The subsidy on diesel purchase is being distributed among the farmers of the district on Thursday.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the listed farmers in three upazilas of the district have been receiving the subsidy.

A total of 45,000 farmers of the district will get Taka 74 lakh as subsidy. Sources said a total of 40,000 acres of land was cultivated by using pumps for irrigation purposes for which Taka 545 was allocated to irrigate per acre of land.

3 Bangladeshi cattle traders captured by BSF

Three Bangladeshi cow traders were captured by the members of Border Security Force (BSF) of India from Ratnai Border under Baliadangi upazila in the district on Monday.

They were identified as Rabiul Alam, 32, Akbar Hossain, 25, of Kashibari village and Rubel Islam, 23, of Jugihat of the same upazila.

BDR sources said BSF members captured them at the border while they went to buy cows from Indian cow traders.

Authorities of BDR sent a letter to BSF counterparts demanding the release of detained Bangladeshi cow traders.

5 inter-district transformer lifters held in Syedpur

Detective Branch (DB) of Nilphamari Police and Syedpur thana police arrested five members of an organised gang of inter-district electric-cable and transformer lifters and seized huge illegal items from WAPDA Bypass Mour area of Syedpur town in the small hours of Monday.

Police said, the joint police team conducted a raid there and arrested Majnu Mian, 28, Mizanur Rahman, 25, Golam Robbani, 25, Hamidul Islam, 30, and Sultan, 35, while they were planning to lift electric transformers from a nearby area. Police also seized huge equipments used for stealing transformers from their possessions.

A number of transformer-lifting, electric cable lifting and other criminal cases are pending against them with different police stations in the region, the sources said.

Memorial library, auditorium to be set up in Comilla village

The foundation laying cere-mony of library and auditorium in memory of three freedom fighter brothers, who embraced martyrdom during the War of Liberation in 1971, was held at Satbaria village under Chauddagram upazila in the district on Friday.

The foundation laying ceremony was inaugurated by Sector Commander and former Chief of Army Staff Major Gen. (Retd) KM Shafiullah. The library and the auditorium are being built at a cost of Taka 16 lakh under the supervision of Zila Parishad. Valiant freedom fighter Maj. Gen (Retd) Syed Ahmed was present in the function as special guest.

The function, presided over by Chief Executive Officer of Zila Parishad Mohammad Asaduzzaman, was addressed, among others, by upazila nirbahi officer of Chauddagram Momtaj Uddin Ahmed and freedom fighter Mofizur Rahman Bablu.

A large number of people including freedom fighters and local elite were present on the occasion.

Free eye camp held in Narsingdi

A free eye camp was held at Radhanagor union parishad premises in Raipura upazila of the district recently. The eye camp was jointly organised by district Administration and Army Camp Narsingdi.

Lt. Colonel Jahangir Hossain formally inaugurated the camp as the Chief guest while Deputy Commissioner of Narsingdi, Zillar Rahman was in the chair. Civil Surgeon Narsingdi Dr. Birandra Nath Sinha, Major Afjal, ADC General Mostofa Kamal and Narsingdi press club president Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan were present on the occasion.

Training on disaster management held in Chandpur

A five-day training course on disaster management began here on Thursday. Organised by Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, Chandpur unit, the training course was participated by volunteers from different upazilas.

The inaugural session was addressed, among others, by Jahangir Ahmad Salim, M Salim Ullah Salim, M Shafiquddin Ahmed, Subhash Chandra Roy.

Police in separate drives arrested 29 people from different places in the district during the past 24 hours till this noon, police sources said.

Of them, Kotwali police picked up eight persons, Gangachara police two, Taraganj police two, Badarganj police one, Mithapukur police six, Pirganj police two, Pirgacha police six and Kawnia police two persons in the drives.

Erosion takes serious turn in Goalanda

GOALANDA (Rajbari), June 26: Erosion by the Padma River has taken a serious turn in the uapzila due to rise in water level in the river and squally weather. Many people of the upazila, living near the river bank, have shifted their dwellings and took shelter to safer places. The worst affected areas are-Bethuri, Gopalpur Bhaba-nipur and Shitalpur of Devgram union and Dakkhin Dhopagathi, Ishail Shibra-mpur, Uttar Daula-tdia and ferryghat area of Daulatdia union. Sources said the three ferry ghats have been facing great risk due to the erosion and these might be washed away at any time, reports UNB.

Female student commits suicide

JHALAKATI, June 26: A female college student allegedly committed suicide in Katpatti area of the district town on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Labony alias Happy, 19, daughter of local small trader Abdus Salam Hawlader and 2nd year accounting student of Barisal BM College. Family sources said Labony took her life hanging from the ceiling of her room at midnight as her parents did not agree to permit her to prosecute her study living in college hostel. On information, police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB

2 drug peddlers arrested in

BAGERHAT, June 26: Police arrested two drug peddlers with heroin from Jaria Maitkumra village of Lakhpur union under Fakirhat upazila on Sunday. Police said, the arrested were identified as Aslam Mollah, 45, and Mannan Hajam, 38. Aslam Mollah is a member of Lakhpur Union Parishad. Acting on a tip-off, a team of police raided the house of Aslam at Lakhpur and arrested them along with heroin, reports BSS.

SI dies in Alamdanga

CHUADANGA, June 26: Abdul Quader, a sub-inspector of police, died of a brain hemorrhage at his Alamdanga Thana Para residence on Sunday. He was 50, Alamdanga thana sources said. Family sources said SI Abdul Quader died soon after he return home in the evening from his duty at Chuadanga police line. He left behind wife, four sons and a daughter to mourn his death, reports BSS.

RANGAMATI, June 26: Mohammad Salim Hossain, a contractor, who was abducted by a group of terrorists for ransom on June 15, was freed from captivity on Monday afternoon. Sources said he was released from Sazek area, under Baghaichhari upazila, about 138 km off from the district headquarter. Police with the help of Mohammad Syed, secretary of Durchhari Bazar and Priyo Nandan Chakma, chairman of Sarwatoli Union Parishad rescued the abducted contractor, reports BSS.

Motorbike rider killed in accident

TANGAIL, June 26: A motor bike rider killed when his bike collided head on at Nazirpara under Mirzapur upazila on Dhaka-Tangail Highway on Monday. The dead was identified as Abbas Ali, 28, of Banshtoil village of the same upazila. Police sources said the accident took place when a Rajshshi bound truck hit the motor bike of Abbas Ali leaving him dead on the spot, reports BSS.
