Prisoners get lobsters in Satkhira jail

SATKHIRA, June 25: Some 1300 prisoners, including many convicts, in the district jail tasted lobsters during lunch on Sunday, an official said. Each prisoner got three pieces of lobsters along with other items, said acting jail super M Tabibur Rahman. He said jail authorities purchased 60 kilograms of lobsters at Tk 270 per kg to entertain the prisoners with the special menu, reports UNB.



Youth stabbed to death

BRAHMANBARIA, June 25: Terrorists stabbed a youth to death by at Chargachh village in Kasba upazila Saturday night. The deceased was identified as Tenu Miah, 28, a poultry bird trader. Police said some unknown persons called Tenu out of his residence over mobile phone at about 9pm. The gang later stabbed Tenu Miah indiscriminately, leaving him critically injured. Tenu died on the way to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, reports UNB.



Workshop on orange held in Gazipur

GAZIPUR, June 24: A daylong workshop on formulating work plan for orange development project was held at Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI) auditorium here on Thursday. Agricultural Secretary M Abdul Aziz inaugurated the workshop with BARI Director General Harun-or-Rashid in the chair. Executive Chairman of BARC Dr MA Razzak, Director General of the Department of Agriculture Extension Shamsul Alam attended the inaugural function. Some 200 persons, including scientists, academics and farmers, participated in the workshop, reports UNB.



10.55 cr poura budget in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, June 25: A Tk 10.55 crore budget of Jhenidah Pourashava for fiscal 2008-2009 was announced Saturday without imposing any additional taxes. Pourashava Chairman Abdul Malek announced the budget at the poura auditorium at about 1pm in presence of Deputy Commissioner Abu Sayed Fakir, Local army camp Commander Lt. Col. Mostafizur Rahman, Additional Police Super TM Mujahidul Islam ward commissioners, journalists and the elite. In the proposed budget, Tk 10.24 crore was earmarked as development expenditure and Tk 30.46 lakh has been shown as surplus in the budget, reports UNB.



One stabbed to death in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, June 25: A man was stabbed to death by a gang of terrorists at Bagadanga village in Moheshpur upazila on Friday. The dead was identified as Sirajul Islam, 40. Police said local terrorists Tabbir and Shanta gave an illicit proposal to the wife of Sirajul's younger brother Jahangir on Thursday. When Sirajul protested the incident the terrorists locked into an altercation with him on Friday morning, reports UNB.



Mango fair held in C'nawabganj

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, June 25: A two-day mango fair concluded here Sunday.

District administration organized the fair at Horimohan Government High School ground in association with Chapainawabganj pourashava. Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner M Hafizur Rahman Bhuiyan inaugurated the fair on Saturday as chief guest. Chaired by Deputy Commissioner of the district Sirajul Huq Khan, the function was addressed, among others, by Additional Police Super Sajjadur Rahman, Begum Kanij Fatema, wife of the Divisional Commissioner, BDR 39 battalion commander Lt. Col. Kibria and pourashava chairman Prof Ataur Rahman, reports UNB.
