Mass awareness to prevent bird flu underscored

Speakers at a workshop here on Tuesday said the country's poultry sector could be saved through prevention of the spread of bird flu by awareness campaigns.

The observation came at a daylong workshop on 'Bird Flu: Eradicating its Fear from Public Minds and Increasing Awareness' held at the training room of RDRS in Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district.

Nilphamari district office of Rangpur-Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) organised the workshop to create mass awareness and necessary preparedness for protecting country's poultry sector, wrecked by series of outbreaks early this year.

Chaired by Programme Manager Shariful Islam of RDRS, the workshop was attended by Jaldhaka Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan as the chief guest.

Enterprise Coordinator of RDRS Shafiqul Islam, OC of Jaldhaka Thana Norendra Nath Sarker, Upazila Health Officer Shawkat Ali, Upazila Livestocks Officer Dr Abdul Hye and Upazila Manager of RDRS Arefin, addressed, among others, spoke.

The speakers said Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries due to its geographic, demographic and topographic reasons. The situation has been further aggravated because of the visit of large number of migratory birds in the winter.

They also discussed the global, regional and national situations of bird flu and suggested various ways to keep poultry and human out of danger through precautionary measures. The speakers said poultry sector stakeholders could play a vital role in disseminating correct information about bird flu to common people to help them prevent the spread of the diseases.
