Checking vulgarity in films TO save the film industry from vulgarity, the government has initiated a drive against obscene movies and the production houses that make such films. As a result producers and performers of such films either went into hiding to avoid punishment or directors of quality films declined to cast such performers. This has led to a shortage of heroes and heroines in the industry. To fill the gap, the Film Development Corporation has reportedly initiated a three-month search for 10 pairs of lead actors and actresses. The drive against vulgarity began about four years ago. A section of the film producers, it is alleged, earlier were making films replete with sex, violence, nudity, and erotic dances by scantily clad performers. There were also allegations of adding pornography to cinemas after censor board scrutiny. These films are against the rich cinematic tradition of the country and do not reflect cultural values of the society. This is one of the reasons why nowadays a large section of the moviegoers refrain from going to cinema halls. Filmmakers have great social responsibility, which must not be forgotten. Vulgar movies are possible only when moneymaking is the single motive behind those. Films have tremendous influence on the society in general and the young generation in particular. Good films have great educative value but vulgar films leave harmful influence on young minds and lead them astray. Vulgarity that assumed alarming proportions and caused tremendous harm to the society cannot be allowed to continue. The government drive against obscene films is a welcome step. It must be continued. There are other media like satellite television channels and the Internet through which vulgarity spreads. Pornographic films are also easily available in the country. Without tight control on those the ongoing drive against obscene films will have little or temporary impact. Quality films should be promoted to counter vulgar movies.
