The Smart Woman Survival Guide

It's summertime, and the living is easy. But wouldn't it be nice if it were just a little easier? The Smart Woman Survival Guide is here to help.

Below, we offer 10 Smart Woman Survival Guide-approved ways to make this summer a little sweeter.

1. We're all in the same bloat. If you've indulged in a little too many treats and can't do your pants up. Looping an elastic band through the buttonhole and around the button of your pants. "It seriously works! And no one knows if you wear a longer top."

2. Working out the bugs if you're dining al fresco, you probably don't want any creepy crawly unwanted guests at the table. Put the legs of your picnic table in containers of water: ants can't swim and therefore can't join - and spoil - your fun.

3. No sore feelings been bitten? Baby wipes will temporarily soothe bug bites.

4. An apple a day Use apples to ripen your tomatoes. Apples emit ethylene, which helps tomatoes ripen faster than they would on their own. Simply place them together in a container with a lid.

5. Getting some sun. Put tomato-stained plastic containers out in the sun. The sun will naturally bleach out the stains.

6. Make the most out of melons Leave uncut watermelons out on the counter. In the fridge, they lose their health-friendly levels of lycopene. Store them in the fridge only after they've been cut.

7. Get back to your roots. When buying potted plants to transfer to your yard, look for roots that are white and fuzzy. Anything else is a sign of root rot and even the greenest of thumbs won't help them last long.

8. Take time for TV. Missed your favourite show while on vacation? Just go online. Many major networks make their shows available for online viewing after their original airdate. And keep up with current plotlines of major shows with television blogs.

9. No kidding around. While kids are out of school, be in control of what they watch at home. Visit the TV Guide listings and official show websites to learn what a program is about before your kids sit down to watch. And watch TV with your children. Discuss what you've seen, and plan activities or reading that relate to the themes of the programs.

10. Sleep easy. Want a good night's sleep? Being outside in natural light for at least 30 minutes a day will help you sleep better at night.

Focus on diversity- secrets of success

Getting tapped as a high-potential employee to fast track your career is not an exact science. Companies generally select high-potential employees and develop succession plans at high-level meetings, behind closed doors. A combination of factors-including excellent performance, professional image and exposure to key sponsors, mentors and informal networks-is necessary for women of color to get ahead in corporate America.

If you believe that you hold these keys, but your career still seems stalled, it may be time to ask some tough questions. Check in with a trusted friend or advisor to ask: What do you see as developmental opportunities for me? How do you think I am perceived in the organization? What behaviors do you think it takes to be successful at this company?

Get the Signal

Read the "tea leaves." One way talented person of color miss out on being considered high-potentials is to miss important signals. For even where selection of high-potentials is a secretive process, companies still have ways of indicating who is being groomed for future leadership. Signals may vary somewhat across industries; still, there are some commonalities.

One common signal is an invitation to work on special projects or task forces that report their findings to senior management. These projects allow you to demonstrate your abilities to others in the group and to senior management, providing you with much-needed exposure. The company benefits by testing how its high-potentials work together and by helping them build solid support networks. These networks can help ensure future success at the company.

Be on the lookout for invitation-only leadership development programs sponsored by your company. If you are invited to such an event, know that you are likely receiving a signal that the company supports your professional development.

Another signal involves increased attention from senior managers and colleagues. This can range from casual inquiries about your current projects to more frequent invitations for lunch or coffee to "talk shop." This attention indicates that people like being around you and value your opinion. Conversely, a lack of interest from your colleagues is also telling and may indicate that you are not on your way up the corporate ladder.

And finally, consider your company's financial investment in you.

This is one of the more important signs of corporate approval that you can receive. When a company pays for you to attend external leadership retreats or invests in an executive coach for you, it is helping you to better develop your abilities. This means that it considers you an asset worth investing in.

Make Connections

Isolation is not a good sign of your future success. Instead, make sure you build solid relationships with colleagues. Ask yourself whether anyone knows you besides your boss and close circle of coworkers. Have you been selected recently for a cross-functional initiative or an important assignment?

Also, make sure you find the right mentors. Seek out a sponsor-a senior in the organization who is interested in your career. But don't settle for just one or limit yourself to only those who share your ethnicity or gender. A common mistake women of color make is to believe that someone who shares your ethnicity is necessarily your ally.

Be open and flexible to mentors and sponsors who do not resemble you.

In addition, women of color should have a diversity of relationships at work. In the same way that you have differ-ent friends who meet different needs in your personal life, you should have different professional relationships that meet your different professional needs. This strategy can help you, especially if one of your key mentors leaves the organization. Develop enough of your own relationships to continue your ascent, even after a mentor's departure.

Have a Written Plan

Women of color should come up with a written plan detailing their goals and objectives in the organization. This is for your own use only-not for sharing with colleagues. This plan can help prevent women of color from being sidetracked into roles with a low career trajectory. Sometimes roles or functions that sound good will not ultimately move you ahead in the organization. Take control of your own career-for, although nothing is guaranteed, you are likely to fare much better with a plan.

Find Support and Balance

Make connections both within your organization and outside it with friends who can understand the challenges you face at work. Once you have support, it's time to pursue some measure of balance in your life and find time for friends and family.

For multicultural person, the corporate track is still strewn with hurdles

Person of color should seek balance, which can help you to be healthy and happy. An additional benefit of balance is that healthy, happy people are much more enjoyable to be around. Because liability is an important factor in building relationships at work, balance can benefit your career. Be a Power Player Generally, women believe that men and women use power differently. Both powerful men and women "make things happen" and "achieve results," but women tend to view powerful men as using their power over others. In contrast, they view powerful women as being more collaborative. This has led researchers to believe that men are more apt to use power over others, whereas women tend to be more comfortable using power through others. But to exercise power, you must first acquire it. Women tend to acquire power in ways that reflect their usage of it: through building relationships and achieving results. This strategy makes sense for women (who use power through others) because the relationships that they build become the means through which they achieve results. Women of color, however, tend not to acquire power in this way; they are likely to focus more on achieving results than on building relationships. Ultimately, this lessens their power base because it results in poor relationships and therefore the inability to achieve results through others. For women of color to use power effectively, they must take the time to build relationships and alliances. This will also come into play when managing others-one of the most important facets of organizational life. The ability to manage others, and to elicit the best performance from them, is one of the hallmarks of a leader, and such a reputation will serve you well for your entire career. Good managers engender loyalty from their staff and respect from their peers.

Learn the Rules

How men and women use power is not the only Mars vs. Venus difference. Competition at work needs to be dealt with very carefully due to a broad backdrop of "unspoken rules" that exist in corporate culture. Consider the following hypothetical scenario: In a meeting of vice presidents at Company X's headquarters in New York City, a white male making an important point might pound his hand on the table for emphasis. The room's likely response to his table banging? Nothing. Consider whether the room would have the same reaction to a white woman banging her hand on the table to make a point. You might already picture a few people looking askance at each other and maybe even a raised eyebrow. Just reading this, you already get a sense that this behavior would not be viewed the same as it would be for the white male (assuming that they all hold the same title and have similar work experience). Understanding the "unspoken rules" is just one of several challenges. There are peaks and pitfalls to being in your company's pipeline. At its peaks, you will benefit from access to senior managers and gain entrance into important networks. You will also learn more about the broader vision of the company and get a better sense of how it functions. Being aware of how you are perceived and forming relationships with key players are good ways to avoid potential traps. Add to that performing above expectations, and you are well on your way to career success.

The Baul Songs of Bangladesh

Uttam Kumar Chakraborty

The Bangladeshi culture is much wide and deep-rooted. The essence of our Nationalism is nourished by our cultural heritage. One of the branches of this juice is our Baul Song.

Baul Song is the main popular song of the Bangladeshis with religions emotions. There is an art in the method of this musical song. The origin of Baul Song is not without aim ana object. It can be said that the Baul Songs are aimed at surveying the body of the singer while walking/travelling on a long road passing through a forest to search his own self.

The origin of the Baul Song leads us far back to the age of the Buddhist Shohjia. Its spirit is hidden in the chorjapad discovered in a temple of Nepal. This devotional popular song flourished in Bengal during the seventeenth century A.D.

The Baul Song is a mixture of the Buddist Shohjia movement with Islami Sufism and the Vaishnov movement. Reverend Lalon Shai (1774-1890) pursued the Baul Song to a climax by his endeavours. Lalon has been the champion of the Baul Song. He earned International fame. Not only as a Baul singer, but as a philosopher also Lalon got familiarity through his songs. There are places where researches are done on Lalon.

Bangladesh is successful in her trial on religious harmony and tolerance. Simplicity of mind of her people is expressed in their conversation, daily life, daily activities and songs. Here the Hindus, the Christians, the Buddhists and the Muslims live together with their religious performances. Those are successions from the Vaishnov ideology, the Sufism of the Muslims and the monasticism in Christianity. In this way a single unit of spiritual songs has developed, known as Faqri having a guide with his disciples on the context of efforts to come close to the Almighty. The known and renowned figures are Lalon Shah, Seraj Shai, Abdul Karim Shai, Hassan Raza and Wakil Munshi, Voba Pagla and Bijoy Shorkar are genius among the other persons who follow the course of their pioneers mentioned above.

Poet Rabindranath Togore, winner of the Nobel Award, visited the durbar of Lalon Shah. He was charmed at the devotion of Reverend Lalon.

All the regional Baul singers scattered in 64 districts of Bangladesh are united in following the same system of Baul ideology. They compose songs and apply tunes in those. Students and teachers of BangIa literature are not yet eager to collect and preserve the poems and songs composed by these intellectual personalities.

The intellectuals of Bangladesh (in this age of radio & television through satellites) strive hard to achieve the closeness of the Almighty day and night in remote corners of the society. They also wish to save the culture and tradition of Bangladesh through their uncounted activities. They cultovate a system of prayer wherein there are groups of devotees under spiritual guides. Their subsidiary object is earning the confidence of the respective Ustad. Orders and instructions of the Guru is the provision for disciples in their journey to reach the throne of the Almighty. Love and devotion for such thought and ideology in the minds of the inhabitants of Bangladesh is everlasting. The disciples are charmed when they pay attention to the advices in songs sung by their Ustad. In this way this Baul Song lives as a strong cultural media among the rural inhabitants of Bangladesh. The Bangladeshis feel that this system is a characteristic of their national identity. Therefore it should be nourished by cultivation.

We need to refresh our national characteristics by giving importance to people's feeling. The tie of our tradition with philosophy is about to be lost due to negligence. That to should be tightened again. Many among us feel that no system has been developed in our country to preserve and preach the Beul culture. If we properly understand the inner significances of Baul songs sung by the Safi devotees of Bangla and preserve those with care then it is supposed to be a new addition to the Bangla literature. This philosophy is expected to be a part of the universal literature. Therefore, Baul culture is required to be nourished by the support, co-operation and encouragement of all members of this society. The Baul Songs having potential powers should be preserved in modern scientific method for our coming generations. We are also required to underhand the inner significances of these songs. Contributions made by the authors of the Baul culture should be compared and examined. It is expected that we become able to discover and chalk out some ideas in songs whose application to our society can bring good results specially in the fields of communal harmony and national unity. Among us those who love their motherland including its culture and heritage are required to come forward and save this thoughtful Baul section of the society with their contributions. The Baul song is meant not only for singing, but also it is for ponderance and analysis. Therefore, it is expected that a system will devel for realisation and analysis of Baul. songs by a group among the intelligentsia. Let the people having a good sense approach.

We want that the next generation will make the Baul song part of their national heritage by proper cultivation of this art. The following measures may be adopted with that aim in view :

A) A research centre for Baul culture should be established in the Dhaka Metropolis for preservation of songs composed by them having arrangements for imparting training on the same. There will be on expert to trace out. It will be a part of national history.

B) Branch offices will be required in all the 64 districts of Bangladesh gradually.

C) The central committee is expected to arrange On annual conference or seminar on that theme.

D) The Committee will preserve songs in CD.

E) Annual magazine is expected to be published on Baul Culture.

It is expected that the Ministry of Education and Culture will come forward to give this idea a reality. United Nations Educational, Cultural and Social Organisation should be approached for help & co-operation. If the Public Works Department bestows a building abandoned by the Beharis (now in possession of the ministry) to the Bauls to make a centre in the metropolis then the above idea will get an impetus to be formulated.

Learning: Why should you learn a language?

Learning a foreign language takes time and dedication. The reasons below may help to convince you to take the plunge, if such persuasion is needed. Some reasons are practical, some inspirational, some intellectual and others sentimental, but whatever your reasons, having a clear idea of why you're learning a language can help to motivate you in your studies.

Kolik jazyku znáš, tolikrát jsi clovekem.

You live a new life for every new language you speak.

If you know only one language, you live only once.

(Czech proverb)

Emigration

When you move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with the local community. Even if many of the locals speak your language, for example if your L1 is English and you move to the Netherlands, it's still worth your while learning the local language. Doing so will demonstrate your interest in and commitment to the new country.

Family and friends

If your partner, in-laws, relatives or friends speak a different language, learning that language will help you to communicate with them. It will also give you a better understanding of their culture and way of thinking.

Work

If your work involves regular contact with speakers of foreign languages, being able to talk to them in their own languages will help you to communicate with them. It may also help you to make sales and to negotiate and secure contracts. Knowledge of foreign languages may also increase your chances of finding a new job, getting a promotion or a transfer overseas, or of going on foreign business trips.

Many English-speaking business people don't bother to learn other languages because they believe that most of the people they do business with in foreign countries can speak English, and if they don't speak English, interpreters can be used. The lack of foreign language knowledge puts the English speakers at a disadvantage. In meetings for example, the people on the other side can discuss things amongst themselves in their own language without the English speakers understanding, and using interpreters slows everything down. In any socialising after the meetings, the locals will probably feel more comfortable using their own language rather than English.

Study or research

You may find that information about subjects you're interested in is published mainly in a foreign language. Learning that language will give you access to the material and enable you to communicate with fellow students and researchers in the field.

Travel

Many English speakers seem to believe that wherever you go on holiday you can get by speaking English, so there's no point in learning any other languages. If people don't understand you all you have to do is speak slowly and turn up the volume. You can more or less get away with this, as long as you stick to popular tourist resorts and hotels where you can usually find someone who speaks English. However, if you want to venture beyond such places, to get to know the locals, to read signs, menus, etc, knowing the local language is necessary.

A basic ability in a foreign language will help you to 'get by', i.e. to order food and drink, find your way around, buy tickets, etc. If you have a more advanced knowledge of the language, you can have real conversations with the people you meet, which can be very interesting and will add a new dimension to your holiday.

Studying abroad

If you plan to study at a foreign university, college or school, you'll need an good knowledge of the local language, unless the course you want to study is taught through the medium of your L1. Your institution will probably provide preparatory courses to improve your language skills and continuing support throughout your main course.

Pet care: Summer care tips for your pets

Summer is a time for both you and your pet to enjoy the sunshine and outdoors, but along with the fun, the season also offers up situations that can endanger your pet. By taking precautions, you can decrease the chance that disaster will happen.

In nice weather you may be tempted to take your pet with you in the car while you travel or do errands. Dogs and cats can't perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Pets who are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage, and can even die. Don't think that just because you'll be gone "just a minute" that your pet will be safe while you're gone; even an air-conditioned car with the motor off isn't healthy for your pet. To avoid any chance that your pet will succumb to the heat of a car this summer, be sure to play it safe by leaving your pet cool and refreshed at home while you're on the road. And if you do happen to see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked. If the owner does not return promptly, call local animal control or the police department immediately. For more information, check out our page on pets and hot cars.

Summer is often a time when people fertilize their lawns and work in their gardens. But beware: Plant food, fertilizer, and insecticides can be fatal if your pet ingests them. In addition, more than 700 plants can produce physiologically active or toxic substances in sufficient amounts to cause harmful effects in animals.

With people and dogs spending more time outside, dog bites are likely to increase in the summer months. Spaying or neutering your dog reduces the likelihood that he will bite and provides many other health benefits.

Make sure your pet is always wearing a collar and identification tag. If you are separated from your pet, an ID tag may very well be his or her ticket home.

Check with your veterinarian to see if your pets should be taking heartworm prevention medication. Heartworm disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, can be fatal in both dogs and cats.

Pets and pools can equal disaster. Prevent free access to pools and always supervise a pet in a pool.

Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they're enjoying the great outdoors so they can stay cool.

Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but extra care needs to be taken with older dogs, short-nosed dogs, and those with thick coats. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws.

Another summertime threat is fleas and ticks. Use only flea and tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Some over-the-counter flea and tick products can be toxic, even when used according to instructions.

Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require sunscreen on his or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or light-colored fur on their ears are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer.

Don't take your pets to crowded summer events such as concerts or fairs. The loud noises and crowds, combined with the heat, can be stressful and dangerous for pets. For your pet's well being, leave her at home.

In summer heat your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions are very serious and could cause your pet to die. You should be aware of the signs of heat stress, which could include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower his body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water over his body to gradually lower his core body temperature. Apply cold towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck, and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get him to a veterinarian immediately.

Poems

As you are coming

As you are coming

a cottage was made

on the bank of the river Chankhali

were I have been waiting constantly.

As you are coming

the surrounding air is moving

upwards by dancing

and towards the sea

its water is rapidly flowing.

As you are coming

the river is gently murmuring

and the boat on its water

is moving by mild tilting.

As you are coming

the yellow sun-rays are slowly

scattering in the evening.

Being hopeful since then

I have been waiting eagerly

sometimes on this bank

sometimes on that bank

of the river Chankhali.

I have been restlessly waiting

with the hope since morning

as you are coming.

-Dr. Sirajul Karim

Thank you Allah

Thank you Allah very much

I am thanking you for your every touch.

You thought world will be good for long

But people are doing everything wrong.

Sorry for all the bad deed

Please give us everything we need.

Thank you for the day and night

Thank you for the day and night

Thank you for the beautiful sunlight.

You are the great for me

You are the big and you will always be.

We always try to follow your rules

The people who don't they are fools.

We are grateful to you all the time

Forgive us if we have done any crime.

In the judgment day give all of us a green pass

I am ending this rhyme by thanking you from all of us.

My Beloved Father

Dear dad

Don't ever be sad.

May you have a successful life

With your loving wife.

Allah will always bless you

And stay with you while every work you do.

You are my best friend

Your sweet life will never end.

Be honest in your life's away

And have a happy day.

Jewelry: Symbolism of Bangles

The bangle is a decorative ornament that women across Bangladesh have been wearing for years. In fact, the bangle has a great socio-cultural-religious significance in our history and culture. This is because literature has glorified this ornament to make it the epitome of feminine grace.

Besides all this, bangles have a very traditional value. As it is considered inauspicious to be bare armed, Married women are always wearing some bangles around their wrists. Today, the modern day women may not wear bangles with their daily attire, but only on occasions and festivals. This is because to them, bangles have a very sentimental value. In fact, to the woman, bangle is not only an ornament, but also an important part of womanhood and honor.

Bangles are made of many materials including plastic, glass, metal, kundan, lac, beads, black metal, silver and even gold. They are found in different colors, designs and different shapes too. Of course, the most durable of these bangles is the gold bangle, and the least durable, glass bangles. This is why many women prefer wearing gold bangles for day-to-day life and glass bangles for special occasions.

Bangles are very popular and with growing fashion trends, have become a highly popular in their various designs and forms. No longer are bangles just made in a circular shape with glass. Today, bangles are made from various materials and can be found in many shapes such as round, rectangular, oval etc. Worn in pairs, one on both arms, bangles are colorful, beautiful, and enhance the beauty of women who wear them. Gold, silver, wood, ferrous metals, plastic, rubber, and glass among other things are used extensively to make bangles. However, tradition demands that women wear gold and glass bangles or only gold or glass bangles.

Gold bangles studded with semi-precious gems, or diamonds, pearls or just plain gold bangles with pretty designs are popular in not only our country but also in the world. The range of these bangles can range from downright simple to extremely intricate. Generally, women adorn a single bangle across the world in various variations such as bracelet. But in other regions such as the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia, bangles have been evolved into a wide range and each is used for different occasions.

Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, India is the single largest producer of glass bangles. Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh State, also has a historic bangle market called Laad Bazar. In Pakistan, glass bangles come from Hyderabad.

Medium Hairstyles- the current medium sized hairstyle is messy and wild look. Don't comb your hair after stepping out of the shower to naturally get this desired look. Just apply some hair gel and moderately mess your hair with your fingertips. Make sure to avoid the hair falling on your face.

Caesar cut is traditionally short all over with the bangs pushed forward and upward. To maintain the Caesar cut the whole day apply a mixture of gel and styling mousse. It looks great on young college boys and middle-aged professionals with preppy clothes and freshly shaved face. You can even go for short Caesar cut with spike all over. However remember that it is a fun hairstyle and definitely not a professional one. So, if your boss is a professional person; do not have them in office.

'Rock disco hair' is specifically flat with the split in the middle. You can even go for haircut that is short on the top, in the front and long over the ears. Rock disco hair suits the best with people who have healthy and thick hair. You can even streak them with varied colours that suit your skin complexion.

Longer haircuts: If your sweetheart is mesmerized with John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan's long hairstyles then go for long and lean hair that is above your shoulder level. You can keep them long all over or layer them for effective look. Do not let it hang over your collarbone. Use hair accessories like hair bands to manage them well as it is right 'in fashion' today.

Ershadul Kabir

Young Artist Amman Rashid's 2nd solo ornament exhibition is starts from today Saturday, June 14, 2008; at 5 p.m. at Words N Pages (125, Gulshan Avenue; Gulshan-2; Dhaka-1212). Eminent sculptor and artist Ferdousi Priyobhashini inaugurate the exhibition which organized by 'Aadi', an ornament brand developed by Amman Rashid himself.

The exhibition, show casing different and various types of Aadi items, will continue up to 21 June [15 June-21 June everyday 10-AM-8pm]. Aadi is an ornament brand upholding the trend of using natural elements. Behind the making of each ornament, there larks a different story. This is why each of the brand's ornament bears exceptional name; such as Chirosokha, Marfoti, Adibashi, Dhal, Ekta Chabi Maira. The ornaments meant for the delight of all age brackets for daily attiring, made of different types of thread, dry seed, dry fruits, shells, snails, mud or left-over naturals materials, are the out-come of hard labor, sweat and passion. Amman, through his fusion of indigenous motif with African flavor, dreams of a cultural bondage between the two traditions. His works are of unique design without being isolated from the tradition.

Launched in 1982 by the French Ministry for Culture, the Fête de la Musique has long been organizing in more than hundred countries across the globe. It takes place on 21st June, the day of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. The main objective of organizing such an event all over the world is not only to popularize the musical practices among the people of the global village, but also to uphold their respective cultural and social norms and values.

Thanks to the impulse and the dynamism of the French cultural network abroad (The departments of Cultural Affairs at the French Embassies, French cultural Centers and Institutes and the Alliances Françaises) the Fête has an important international growth. Indeed, a lot of events are now set up by local organizers (Ministries for Culture, City Councils, local artistic associations, etc.).
