Call to assist farmers to make T-Aman farming a success

Major General Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumy, GOC of 66 Infantry Division said here a bumper food production has been achieved in the country including North Bengal this year due to seriousness ad activeness of the farmers and the officials concerned.

"We have to face and solve our food crisis by producing more food including paddy by using latest agri-technology and giving the due importance of the farmers' interest" GOC Major General Syed Fatemi Ahmed Rumy said this while addressing an opinion exchange meeting on the development issues of the district with the district level top officials at the Circuit House of the town her on Monday as chief guest.

He urged all to assist the farmers to make the production of T-Aman Paddy a success during the current season by distributing seed, fertiliser and other inputs to them property.

Besides, the meeting also discussed elaborately about the development of Water Development Board, Food Department, Local Government Engineering Department, Roads and Highways Department, Education, Health and Law and Order including national election-2008.

The GOC listened to them and gave guidelines to the authorities concerned to implement the project in time.

The GOC also urged the officials to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to gear up the development activities in the district.

Deputy Commissioner Abu Muhammad Yousuf made his speech as welcome speaker. The meeting was also addressed, among others, by Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension ANM Mizanur Rahman Amin, District Controller of Food M. Raihanul Kabir, Executive Engineer of WDB M. Shafiul Azam, president of district Chamber of Commerce and Industry Shahjada Anowarul Qardir, Poura Chairman Anowarul Hasan Sabur and district Correspondent of the BSS M Shahiduzzaman.

Acting Brigade Commander Lt. Colonel M. Shahanur Rahman, district Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel Abul Kashem M. Ibrahim, acting Police Super Mollah Nazrul Islam, Major Dewan M. Mizanur Rahman and Major M. Jahangir Hossain including district level officials were present on the occasion.

Later, the GOC visited the Mini Dairy Farm at Pirgachha village under Shahapara Union of Sadar Upazila in the district. He also talked to the farm owners and encouraged them to run their project properly.

Earlier, he also visited Youth Development Centre at Tulshighat where about one hundred unemployed youths including girls are taking part in training on Sweater Knitting and Linking Machine operating jointly conducted by Bangladesh Army, District Administration and Directorate of Youth Development in cooperation with BGMEA and BIFT.

540 sacks of fertiliser seized in Mymensingh

Joint forces seized 540 sacks of fertiliser from a godown at Haluaghat Madhya Bazar, of the district on Monday.

The team also recovered 9,780 Indian currency notes during the raid.

Sources said, acting on a tip-off, the team of the joint forces seized 540 sacks of fertiliser including 220 sacks of fake fertiliser from the godown of one Shahnewaz, a fertiliser dealer of the bazar.

Of the total seized fertilizer, 320 sacks were meant to smuggle out to India, the sources added. Later the team raided the house of Shahnewaz and recovered 9,780 Indian currency note including 9,000 counterfeit rupees. A case was lodged in this regard with Haluaghat police station.

Allama Iqbal Research Forum formed at RU

The Philosophy and thoughts of the great poet Allama Iqbal, to restrain and implement in our practical life, some eminent teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) formed a Research Forum titled 'Allama Iqbal Research Forum' on Monday at RU. The object of the forum is researching his literary and introducing him to the readers who speak in Bengali Language.

On the launching conference of the forum held at 3rd Science Building while a 13-member executive committee formed. Former Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. M Altaf Hossain presided over the Programme.

52 arrested on various charges in Rajshahi

Police, in different anticrime drives, rounded up 52 persons on various charges from different areas in city and nine upazilas of the district in last 24 hours till on Tuesday evening.

Of them, 11 were picked up from different areas in the metropolis while 41 others from nine upazilas of the district. Police also seized 13 bottles of phensidyl and 12 liters of country-made liquor during drives in different parts of the city.

Traffic police lodged 44 cases under the motor vehicles ordinance and seized a truck and a motorbike for without having legal documents during drives against the non-registered motor vehicles and other document related malpractices in different parts of the city during the time.

T Aman farming programme begins in Meherpur

The Agriculture Extension Department (AED) has fixed a target of producing 43 thousand tons of Transplanted Aman paddy from about 20,000 hectares in Meherpur district this year.

According to AED officials of Meherpur districts, hundreds of farmers have already furnished preparing their T-Aman seed beds, crisis anywhere, seed beds are almost ready and farmers have already started planting T-Aman saplings in the low-lying areas.

The AED sources said, 12,950 hectares will be brought under T-Aman cultivation programme in Meherpur sadar, 7,050 hectares in Gangni Upazila.

The Meherpur Krishi Bank, BADC and other organisations have already taken necessary steps to achieve a bumper production of T-Aman crops this year, the sources added.

Jute cultivation being increased in Rangpur

The production target of Jute cultivation has increased in Greater Rangpur district during the current season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said, the target was fixed at 35,005 hectares of land with production target 25,083 bales jute this year.

Of the land Local variety on 4001 hectares and Tosha variety on 12,000 hectares are being cultivated.

Mobile court realises: Tk 43,000 in Rangpur

A mobile court realised Taka 43,000 as fines from 26 businesses establishments in the city on various charges during a day- long anti-adulteration drive on Monday.

Sources said the court fined them for conducting business illegally and without trade licenses, selling sub-standard seeds without any approval from the government, selling adulterated and rotten foodstuffs under open sky and unhygienic environment without BSTI certification.

The court, led by executive magistrate Kamrul Hassan, conducted the raids at Katchari Bazar, DC Mour, Dhappost Bazar, Bus Terminal, Kamarpara, Shapla Chattar, Grand Hotel Mour, Ershad Swarani, Poura Bazar and other places of the city.

Members of the joint forces, police, BSTI officials, Rangpur District Sanitary Inspector, Seed Officials of the BADC, and other concerned took part in the drives.

700 bottles of phensidyl recovered in C’nawabganj

Police in a drive recovered 700 bottles of phensidyl from Islampur under Sadar upazila in the district on Saturday.

Based on a secret information, a team of the police raided one Bablu's house in the area and recovered the phensidyl. None was arrested in this connection. A case was filed with Sadar thana in this connection.

Workshop on prevention of HIV/AIDS held in Brahmanbaria

A day-long workshop on the program for prevention of HIV/AIDS was held at the conference room of Ashuganj Upazila Parishad in the district on Tuesday.

Maitree Bangladesh organised the workshop. UNO of Ashuganj Rezaul Maksud Zahedi inaugurated the workshop chaired by Dr Abdullah Al Mahmud.

The workshop was addressed, by upazila level government officials, civil society members and leaders of professional groups including Milton Gosh, Sohrab Mia and Dr Mahbuba Jahan.

A total of 40 persons including NGO activists, teachers, religious leaders, journalists and public representatives participated in the workshop.

Three alleged robbers held in Mymensingh

Police arrested three alleged highway robbers from Phulpur upazila and Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) area under sadar upazila on Monday.

Police said, three dacoits looted motor cycle, mobile phone and cash money from one Qudrat Ali of Dhubaura upazila at Baula Bazar on Mymensingh-Dhubaura road under Phulpur upazila on June 6.

Following a case filed by Qudrat Ali with Phulpur police station police started investigation and arrested one Jalal Uddin, 55, from Phulpur and Milon, 35 and Swapon, 30 from BAU area. The arrested persons confessed their involvement in the dacoity.

Barisal Group Theatre Federation divisional conference held

The day program of the Barisal divisional conference of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation was (BGTF) held on Saturday with the slogan of 'Jago Sangram Saje, Jago Kalyan Kaje wake.

Senior advocate, journalist and dramatist Manabendra Batabayal inaugurated the conference by hoisting national and organisational flags at Aswani Kumar Hall premises and holding rally on city roads 10:00 am Saturday morning.

The other sessions of the program held at the auditorium of Shabdaboli Group Theatre presided over by Syed Dulal, presidium member of BGTF.

M Hamid, president, was chief guest and Keramat Mawla and Liakat Ali Khan Lucky, presidium members, Jhuna Chowdhury, secretary general, Aktaruzaman, assistant secretary general and Maruf Kabir, research secretary of BGTF were special guests of the program.

The daylong program included workers conference, receptions of honor to drama activists Habibul Huq Polu of Barisal and late Shamsul Islam Chand of Jhalakati, presenting songs of dramas and staging drama.
