40 pc women representation in local govt bodies stressed

A 10-member delegation of Nari Uddyog Kendra (NUK) on Sunday called on President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed at Bangabhaban here today.
During the meeting, the leaders of the NUK, a platform of elected representatives of local government bodies, apprised the President of their activities relating to empowering women and ensuring participation of women in the national development process.
They underscored the need for ensuring 40 percent women representation to different local government bodies as well as specifying the jurisdiction of women representatives' in the activities of local bodies.
The President gave a patient hearing to the delegation and assured them of extending his all out cooperation to them in implementing their logical suggestions to empower women.
Commissioner of Khulna City Corporation Shamima Sultana Seema, commissioner of Rajshahi City Corporation Anju Ahmed, commissioner of Barisal City Corporation Taslima Kalam Poly and commissioner of Sylhet City Corporation Jebun Nahar, among others of the delegation, were present.
Military Secretary to the President Major General Mohd Aminul Karim, Secretary of the President's Office Md Sirajul Islam and Press Secretary to the President Abdul Awal Howlader were present.
Council session of Kalyan Party city unit June 22

The council session of the city unit of Bangladesh Kalyan Party will be held on June 22 at the National Press Club at 3 pm.
This was decided at an extended meeting of the city unit at the party's central office here on Saturday afternoon.
Party Chairman Major General (retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim and secretary general Abul Kalam Azad were present as the chief guest and the special guest, a party press release said.
Syed Ibrahim said the Kallyan party has been working for establishing a welfare state through holding free and fair elections on the basis of consensus and creating a healthy and democratic political trend in the country.
He expressed the hope that all democratic parties would play meaningful roles in creating a healthy political trend, free from corruption and terrorism.
Among others, Harun-ar-Rashid Bikrampuri, Mahfuz Ali Chowdhury Nasim, Sahabuddin, Shahidur Rahman Tamanna, Badrudoza Rashid Babla, Gause Azam Chanchal, Delwara Munshi, Shuvashish Samaddar Shuva, Ibrahim Khalil Mamun and Mamtaz Begum spoke on the occasion.
5 BTTB officials suspended

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has directed the Bangladesh Telephone and Telegraph Board (BTTB) to put its five senior accounts officers under temporary suspension for misappropriating nearly Taka three crore through fake vouchers.
Official sources told BSS here on Sunday that administrative official Abul Kalam Azad was also suspended on the allegation of holding a file in the ministry. A departmental case has also been filed against him in this connection.
According to the BTTB sources, the ministry's suspension order was carried out against these accounts officers today.
Masud appointed Bangladesh envoy to Italy

The Government has appointed Masud Bin Momen, currently serving as Director General (UN and Human Rights) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the next Ambassador of Bangladesh to Italy.
A career diplomat, Masud joined Bangladesh Civil Service Foreign Affairs in 1988, a foreign office press release said on Sunday.
He served in the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in New York, Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad and as Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi.
He also served on deputation as director at the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu, the release said.
Masud is married and blessed with one son and one daughter.
CA presides over 20th BOI board meet

The Board of Investment (BOI) at its 20th meeting held here on Sunday reviewed both local and foreign investment positions and discussed formulation of a strategic plan to improve the investment climate in the country.
Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed presided over the meeting held at the Chief Adviser's office, where strengthening of the BOI with adequate manpower and construction of its own building also came up for discussion.
Finance and Planning Adviser Dr AB Mirza Azizul Islam, Commerce and Education Adviser Dr Hossain Zillur Rahman, Chief Adviser's Special Assistants Professor M Tamim, Manik Lal Samaddar and Brig. Gen (retd) M A Malek; Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Saleh Uddin Ahmed, FBCCI President Annisul Haque and President of Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI), among others, attended the meeting.
Chief Adviser's Principal Secretary Ali Imam Majumder, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Syed Fahim Munaim and other senior officials were also present, a BOI press release said.
