The bumper syndrome These days it is now a common feature that the newspapers carry news of 'bumper production' of many an agricultural items. It ranges from rice to maize, pumpkin to potatoes, chillies, and wheat - almost everything. These are surely good or welcoming news in the face of severe food crisis that the countrymen are experiencing for about a year. This is a good sign for the matter that the growers - who comprise more than 80 percent of the total population of the country have realised that they need to produce more for mere survival and hence they have endeavoured to grow more for food safety (of self and the nation at large) and security. They deserve sincere thanks for their jobs. But one thing worries me much if such bumper or boom also happens to baby birth in the country this year. News reports are there that the birth control measures have just become redundant in the country for lethargic actions of the concerned government apparatus. God forbids that my apprehension does not come true. But if that happens, then all good works will be just washed away and the net result will be further aggravation of the food crisis. Let us be careful in time. Abu Osman Faridpur
