Call to re-fix import duty on sugar Staff Reporter Bangladesh Sugar Dealer Businessmen Association yesterday demanded re-fixation of import duty on sugar, re-fixation of sugar price and stoppage of import of substandard Indian sugar to protect the local mills. Addressing a press conference yesterday at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium, the leaders of the association said local mills would gradually face ruination if the duty on import of sugar was not increased and import of poisonous Indian sugar was not stopped. Association President Mustafizur Rahman Babul and General Secretary Dewan Zinnah said a vested quarter is importing sugar through under invoice using land ports and thus depriving the government of huge revenue. They expressed their alarm over the import of Indian sugar, which is harmful to public health. The Indian sugar has glutted the local markets, they added. They urged the government to re-fix import duty on raw sugar at Tk 12,000 per ton from Tk 4,000 and for white sugar at Tk 15,000 from Tk 5,000.
